Living Big In A Tiny House

Living Big In A Tiny House

Жыл бұрын

The Nook On The Hill isn’t your average house. Far from it. It’s small in size, but huge in heart. There’s love built into the walls of this home. Memory of friends and family. For its builders and owners, Benj and Holly, it’s a place of sanctuary and healing.
This small house has everything. It’s filled with character and brilliant design. Spatially, it’s an efficient home which boasts all the best qualities of tiny homes and small space design in a slightly larger and grounded structure. It’s solar powered and built with many reclaimed materials. It’s filled with art, colour, and treasured handcrafted items.
Beyond all that though, this home has a character which extends out far beyond its brick and mortar. It tells a deep story of love, loss and perseverance.
We hope you enjoy the tour of this very special home.

@@luzr6613 True. Confining the home to what can fit on a standard or even slightly extra-wide trailer means living in a tunnel. I've lived in an apartment like that. Would much prefer a small home with the rooms squarer & more flexible to design, to a tiny where many of the design choices (like built-in modern sofas w/storage) are forced.

Disagree, bricks have no insulation, the solar panels are necessarily badly orientated being on opposite sides of the roof, loads of windows but the large black beams really cut the view, the garden doesn't blend in the environment, the utilities outsides have a nice red neck touch, why not hide it with at least wood panels.

Yah I’ve got a small 2 bed 1 bath house built in the 80s. But even if we added to it, it would still be small compared to other houses. It’s 1,100 sq ft. But if we had several kids and just wanted to expand rather than move… I like seeing lots of concepts.

@@schuylergeery-zink1923 In central europe 100 m2 (about 1000 ft2) bungalows are decently common family homes with 3 bedrooms. Wouldn't even call them small. I am aware though that in the US average home sizes are from the European perspective very extravagant. The thing I would love to see is a tiny home of around 60 m2. If a tiny house can be enough for 2 people with 37m2, and a lot of spaces (bathroom and kitchen) you only need once whether you have 2 people or 4 people... then I think 60m2 should be possible.

Is that a realistic amount for a small house in Australia? Because $200,000 AUD ($132,560 USD) is crazy expensive for a small house in many parts of the U.S. If I could afford to pay that much, I wouldn't need to shop around for an "affordable" tiny house; I could buy a very nice regular house for less than $130,000 USD.
@Diana-ks6sz
@Diana-ks6sz Жыл бұрын
@@kareninalabama You are right that in the US it really depends on where you are. I live in the DC metro area and my 800 sq ft condo (nice but old complex) could list for $230,000.
@maryfolks9368
@maryfolks9368 7 ай бұрын
@@Diana-ks6szoh that's crazy to think about being so much. But I've grown up in central Oklahoma where the pay is less too. My oldest daughter and her husband bought a beautiful brick home with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, 2 car garage with a shop. I think it's 1800 square feet on 4 acres for $150,000.00. That was 6 yrs ago and it appraises for $200,00.00 today. Yeah, $250,000.00 for a tiny home in my area is highway robbery. 😊

@@kareninalabama In some parts of the US you could find a house "for $130,000 or less". but certainly not in all states. The further west you go in the US, the more expensive housing and land is. And, of course, housing in major cities, -- Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago, NYC, wherever they are is more expensive. Even fixers can be pricey.

Yes totally agree, here in Denmark a guy was building a Tiny house but it ran up to $ 400.000 with all the government restrictions. So would have been cheaper to build a small house or renovate an existing house 🏠. I guess it all depends on location, land price, regulations, how much you can do yourself, free materials, money etc. Many aspects to consider

@Lars Stougaard : Yes, a very nice house. Not a Tiny House in the real sense. In Australia, there are probably different requirements for a house than in Europe. This very nice house is thermally inferior because there is no insulation against heat and cold. In Europe, even in Denmark, it is cold in winter and very hot in summer. This house is not suitable for Europe. If it is freezing here, i.e. minus 20 degrees Celsius in winter, then the house has a problem. If it's plus 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, the air conditioning consumes a lot of electricity because the house is not insulated. And as you write correctly, everything depends on many factors, from land prices to building regulations. That's why it can be made for so little money. Many greetings from Austria.

The prices confuse me also. Some give up full sized home to downgrade to a tiny home and pay just as much or more than their full sized home. I can't see selling my full sized home and taking all of the profit to put in a tiny home. Where is the win in that?
@larsstougaard7097
@larsstougaard7097 Жыл бұрын
@wyntersteele1a I have seen many videos on many different houses. One young guy managed to build a cool tiny house for $ 8000. Another couple made a luxury house on wheels for $ 150.000. So depends on your situation and budget and lifestyle /movement. I have seen quite a few people that build or stay cheap or free on family or friends land. Like this video it was his family who owned the land. I guess if you are young, can buy a cheap trailer and start build DIY over 6 - 12 month in your own speed and budget, you could have a very cheap home in the end. After watching 100s of videos it seems to me it always comes down to the question of land and land ownership plus location. I saw a single girl who had made a fantastic tiny house in California, but her land was far away from anything and anyone, she seemed quite sad that so few camed to visit her.

Indeed, our homes should be healing places...my own apartment is one for me....but I know that sometimes, one is also grateful to just get a room off the streets for a while. I was homeless for 8 1/2 months ten years ago, not because I couldn't afford a place, but because of the underhanded thing a landlord did to me, kicking me out of his rental place and nearly ruining my reputation while doing it. I was very thankful to get a room in a boarding house just as winter started; stayed there for four long years before finally moving 800 miles away, and now having a sweet little apartment that is exactly what I need, and what I looked for for nearly ten years before finding it, far from my home state and city.

Thanks Andy! The break hasn't been much of a break to be honest. We've been hard at work updating the new book, and I don't know if you've seen much about the Auckland flooding in the news, but we've been having a super wild ride with the weather down here!

Thank you Benj and Holly for sharing your beautiful home with us. I love the really tiny houses, but they don't work for everyone, so it's great that this channel showcases some bigger tinies too as it proves that you don't have to either build on a trailer OR live in a huge house - there are some in between possibilities.

One of my favourites. Being stationary, the added width is really lovely. I wonder how the kitchen corner space was fully utilised.? Exquisite wood and alcoves.Only a comfy seating missing. What a labour of love.

Bravo first tiny home in Australia that has recognised the indigenous land owners and have paid respect to them here. I have to say truly the best "tiny" tall home I've seen in a long while. This is a beautiful couple who have done a fantastic job with their home. I have to say as usual Bryce and Rasa showcased this home in such a way we could appreciate and enjoy this couple's home. 🙏🏾👌🏾🙂 😊

I noticed the recognition of those who came before as well - both family and the communities of peoples who lived in that place in the past - the Djab Wurrung. Given that so much of the Tiny House movement reflects purposeful living, reflecting respect for the land and for the future of the planet, it only makes sense to acknowledge all the societies who did this throughout history.

Thanks for all of these tours Bryce & Rasa, I found your channel on a whim one day through the video on Douglas' architect's micro studio apartment, and you have helped me realize that I absolutely want to be living small in the future. I am an architecture student right now, and some of the design & detailing you have shown is truly inspiring. Thank you to you both, and to all the people who have shared their houses over the years.

I love all of this videos of tiny housing and I can imagine to live like that even if I am comfortable right now as I am. Interestingly enough I somehow cannot imagine to live in luxury homes when I watch some celebrities in their mansions, I very often do not like their style and this huge mansions give me anxiety when I think about the housekeeping :D. But, I never lived in a luxury and never had anybody employed for taking care of my house so that must be just my personal experience. But I do understand people living in tiny homes but also there is one thing I am not comfortable with - living off grid :). But more power to them.

Bryce, there are so many cool features in this house! But my favorite is that they put the washer outside to save space and it doesn’t ramble the house. And I wish all young men had a Dad like his !

If you wanna be successful, you must take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to making you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life...
