Thank you, thank you - I've been putting off dyeing for ages (really nervous to try) but spent today making up dyes ( only have primary colours ) and promised myself tomorrow will be the day I dye!!! Now you've given me the confidence to definitely do it Thank You 😊

Soooo many take aways!! Loved this! This has been one of those parts of felting that has intimidated me. It sounded so difficult. I even went to a local guild's dye party and they had pots going with dye in them. It was easy enough to place my locks in the pots and come back for them later. But to do this from the start was daunting. Marie makes this so sime and easy! Need to buy dye now! Thank you!

Today's class was so great! I have wanted to dye my own textiles but have been afraid the process was too complicated and I was afraid of the dyes. You made it look so manageable I am ready to re-think it! Thank you so much for all you do to inspire creativity in the world.

What a gorgeous scarf, Marie. Those are just my colors (even chartreuse!). I’ve done the baggie/microwave method using Kool-Aid too. It already has the citric acid already in it. Even safer than the acid dyes with kids.

This was really cool to see! You had mentioned an alternate to the vinegar could be citric acid. Have you ever tried dying with the citric acid? If so, do you notice any difference in the final results between the two acids? Also, I am super fascinated to see how this would be done with wool. So many ideas!
@LivingFelt4 жыл бұрын
Ihave dyed with citric acid...do mot like the smell. Some people don't like smell of vinegar. I have noticed difference in some colors....after a fe experiments, I found I prefer the vinegar.

I’m so glad I found your channel. I have some habotai silk 5mm . I have fiber relative dye, Acid dye, ranger alcohol dye , tulip tie dye and Rit fabric dye. But I don’t know which one of all these dyes will work like the way you just did on your channel. I’m new at this and I’m trying to make my own silk flags for worship but the few times I tried they don’t come out how I wanted, where u can see the different colors. bought soda ash dye fixer too. So which one of my dyes u recommend for microwave? You advice would mean so much to me. God Bless you

I’d like to try this! Would it also work in a crock pot, perhaps leave it in longer than the 2 minutes? Thanks!
@LivingFelt4 жыл бұрын
Hi Wendy, test the heat on your crock pot...it needs to be around 170F - 190F for an hour. My last one did not get hot enough.

yes...but seems less color-fast... IMHO

Love that you did this show I have been looking at dyes for some time but afraid to take the leap. I read that silks should be washed with alum solution Is this step optional?
@LivingFelt4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your color needs...for this merhis...abstract, variegated..its fine not to. When we prewash our silk, we use Synthropol.

I don t know if this question has been asked, seen I watching the replay but about how long will the dye last in the squirt bottles if you don't use it all?
@LivingFelt4 жыл бұрын
It is said they will last 6 months, and best to store in fridge....heat up to dissolve solids prior to use.

Thanks for the wonderful silk microwave dying demonstration. I have never dyed cloth before but your instructions make it look so effortless. I will have to ask the family about their color choices and purchase what I will need. Great ideas for the Christmas gifts. Lots of home creative time with this virus hanging around. Question: Can I use all the silks that you mentioned today for needle felting? Won't the felting needles fray or cut the silk? Perhaps there is a certain size felting needle only to be used on silk??? Please respond. Thank you.
@LivingFelt4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joan! We do not recommend needle felting on tbe silk :) as it is highly prone to damaging the fabric.

How to know how many times to microwave in the 2 minute increments? How to know when it’s time to heat fix the cloth?
@LivingFelt4 жыл бұрын
When the water runs clear, it is fixed. We do 2min increments so we can add more dye where there are still bare spots :) AND if you wish to "fix" a color before applying other colors, this is an optional approach.
