The way a phone charges a lithium battery is completely different from what you think. By the time you hit 80% (84% in your case) The battery charging management chip has already switch over to constant voltage charging. Where is not limited by the 2A input USB anymore. Even if you plugged it into the wall. It still would have charged the rest of the 20% very slowly.

Thank you for the review! We have been debating on placing these more compact panels on top of our outdoor dining patio table umbrellas. We are located on a beach resort island and always have customers asking us: "do you have a place we can charge our cell phone"? This is because they drain their cell phone batteries while listening to music at the beach and such. We have only 1 outlet outside next to our patio and not many available inside the restaurant, so we are going to offer free recharging service for those that decide to dine with us at lunch. We are ordering extra IOS and Android USB cables, just in case the customers did not bring their own. We are also ordering 6 battery banks that are 10, 400mAh, 5-star rated and $15.95 on amazon.com for those customers whose cell phones are close to 0% charge or decide to dine indoors. By the way, our patio gets blasted by the sun from the time it rises until just before it sets! We will of course use our Anker Lite Solar Panels to recharge the battery banks every chance we get. Your review was a great help, as there are sooo many portable solar panels to choose from and we now feel even more confident, that the Anker 15w Lite, will be the way to go for us. Thanks again, Anglers!
@livingsurvival8 жыл бұрын
+Angler Beaudry sounds like a good idea but for diners who need a quick charge in the time it takes to eat the portable panels won't do much good. if it were me I would invest in a few large solar panels on the roof and go into a goalzero battery bank 12v setup. that way you could run an anker 15 port usb or something that people could plug into.
@anglerbeaudry10278 жыл бұрын
+Living Survival That too is a great idea, but if we can boost them up by 10%-20% within 45 minutes, that's a lot better than nothing at all. Also, due to very strict ordinances and such, we cannot mount solar panels on our roof. They are very strict about exterior aesthetics here! So, we did switch to the 21w and ordering 6 of the 10000mAh KMASHI portable battery banks, for those customers that have 20% or less battery life, as we feel that the battery banks will do more for them, than just the panel/s. If that 15w did for you what it did in those cloudy and shady conditions, we feel confident that the 21w Anker Lite in some serious and very extreme direct sunlight; should offer a "better than nothing" at all charge to the Patrons cell phone. Again, if their cell abttery is too low, we will hand them a battery bank. We were going to get the Innogie 10400mAh for $15.95, but the KMASHI 10000mAh is on sale right now for under $12.00 and has a 4-star rating with 4200+ reviews. Your input is most greatly appreciated and should you have more, please do advise. We do plan on obtaining a multi-port unit for one of the regular outlets, that we do have available. I may in the future try and do the 12v set-up that you recommend, but for now, the above should be a good start...we hope! Thanks again for the reply and look forward to learning more from you and your videos!

I'm getting the 21W Solar Panel and the Anker 26800 battery. So when I go camping this summer I will have power for all my devices. I think charging a battery that you then use to charge your device might be a little better idea. Okay, been testing the 21W solar panel, my Galaxy S4 likes it. Phone was at 77% and charged to 100% in an hour, in direct sunlight at a temp of 70 degree's. So this will supply me with plenty of power when I go on long weekend bike rides. Oh and yes, I did get the 26800 Anker powercore. Tests to come. Yes, would have been nice of the pouch was fully velcroed or zippered. However adding Velcro would not be that hard..

Thanks for the review. I have one of the ones from RAVPower that you've previously reviewed, and it has the same issue with only a small piece of Velcro holding a device precariously inside. A full zipper or least a longer strip of Velcro would be a big improvement. I'm thinking of modding mine with a piece just for some peace of mind. Can't go wrong with a solar panel these days if you're going out into the woods and you want/need your electronic devices!

I’ve heard ‘something’ about iPhones charging on panels like these. If a cloud blocked the panel & charge current dropped, the phone would detect this and lower its charge draw. But then when the cloud passed & high charge current was available again the charge state would not go high, but would stay low. That’s a problem. Has this happened to you ? I’ve heard battery packs don’t do this, so some folks charge battery bank then use that later to charge phone.
@livingsurvival5 жыл бұрын
Yes some panels do not have auto-restart. This one does not. The goal zero does.

If you really want to Anker to make a new pocket you could just email them. They are open to ideas. Like for instance you know the Anker Powerhouse? That was because of me, yes that was because of me. I told Anker hey I wanted a super size battery that capable of powering house appliances, laptops, phones & etc. But the actually email was I want a battery pack with wall outlet. Someone did reply and said we will take that into consideration. WHAM a year later my idea came to life. All I did was tell them. Now I would buy it but I'm cheap so I won't really buy it.

I see Anker divides the large cells into 6 making 3 v 1 a, so each panel is actually 6 v 1a, the 6 volt might help out in cloudy/shady areas... the '15' w is actually 12 watts, the '21' w is actually 18 watts, I hate it when they overstate power... You add a hack to the pocket and make it bigger and fully closed, by sewing an additional material to opening and add velcro the full height of the closer. Fold the added material under when folding up panels to store.

I'm not sure if you realize this, but you actually didn't compare the two systems... I have no idea which of the two to purchase from your video, you seem to only use the 15 (lite) on camera, and the only comments you made were of the design of hanging grommets and the phone pouch. I wanted to KNOW which system was more effective, please? Can you make a follow up video to this clearly defining the charging times of both side-by-side, perhaps talking about whether or not the systems have smart-charging capabilities or automatically stop charging when the power bank you plugged into it is done charging. I dunno something a bit more informative about actual performance comparison?
@SolarizeYourLife7 жыл бұрын
Jer Kenyon the panels are actually 6 v, but the usb ports/circuitry makes them 5 v and probably limit amperage, you can hack this by, by passing the little black box, to access full 6 v 3 a to charge anything, in full sun of course...

Great Solar Panel - but needs waterproofing & water proof pouches for you to slip in your phone / battery pack. Good to have power but in a SHTF plan natrual disaster, it's unlikely that cell towers would work, or your $90/month iPhone AT&T bill gets paid & in a crisis, you might want to ditch the tech - cell phones broadcasting your location like a 24 hour beacon. But in a remote emergency however, you might need to get rescued & having a GPS Cell phone or Satellite Phone for finding your location is very helpful.
@SteedDigital18 жыл бұрын
+SeaJay Oceans download GPS apps that let you download maps, they will always work. cell towers (at least the main big ones) have backup power for just such emergency situations. download some inexpensive survival books on kindle app. phones have very useful compass capabilities especially when out away from buildings. all this and you can buy a useful touch screen phone for like $10 now a days. so, these devices are very useful and worth at least cheap $10 investment. purchased apps, books, etc can be placed on multiple devices also.

I really feel like they should have bundle deals with these. the best set up would be tethering both ports together to charge an anker battery, then charge the phone off of that. this way the phone is always getting a steady/consistent charge and the battery can keep near topped off. when the phone or other device is full unplug it and the battery will top back off through the day. Adding the battery in line with all the protection and smoothing features it has is really the best option.
@Geologist_Mike7 жыл бұрын
I have the same panel and came up with a good trick for it. In between your panel and the phone put in a Goal Zero Switch 20 or 30 battery with a small monoprice usb extension cable for a dollar. Unlike all of the better-priced Anker batteries, the Goal Zero battery was specifically designed for portable solar and so it allows power pass-through. That means your phone will charge while the battery is charging from the panel. Without a pass-through battery, your phone will keep switching between charging and uncharging which slows down the total charge time a lot and makes iPhones vibrate every time they restart. Also as the goal zero battery loses and regains input power as with shadows, it just instantly restarts charging itself with zero effect to the phone charging. Basically the phone keeps charging full speed no matter what. No interruptions. Everything just works reliably and with full speed just like you’re plugged into the wall.

I wanted to contribute my thoughts on this and prepared mind 101 as I found both your channels by looking for reviews for this device. I did some quick and dirty testing and direct sun light gives a little under 1000mAh per hour. In PA. It's about half that when it's overcast. Another tip is that I wouldn't top off devices when the sun is bright as its a waste of that light. I'd prefer to use the full capacity to actually charge normaly versus slow charging. So once my device hits about 80%, I take it off and charge something else.

Anker customer support is excellent. I had one of their first 5 port fast charging hubs and had a dead port. Anker warrantied it, paid the freight and didn't even want me to send in the old one. Had a new one in 4 days. They warrantied the device after 16 months.

Good vid. Ive always wanted to have a rollable panel for the EDC or the ultralight backpack, then you have a great energy option for electronics, even using as a firestarting sparker.

Great video. I've always wondered about how well one of those solar panels would do in real life walking around in and out of the bush and sun. Keep up the great work.

Does this have a power regulator so it doesn't burn out my electric devices?

Too bad these are always made of black material. Leaving your phone to charge outside in a black pouch in the sun, mesh or not is a big fail. All battery technology does not want to be hot and the black color causes a lot of extra heat. My phone will only fast charge for a few minutes before it dials back due to temperature rising in my black solar panel. All solar panels need to be CAMO! Black sucks and is illogical!

Agree, it's so dumb. Should definitely be white or another light color
@jeffgendron19598 жыл бұрын
paulczar At least the solar panel in this video has a thin bezel so less black is in the direct sun. Still it would be better in lighter color. I think these sunpower flexible solar cells are partially transparent, so having the material behind them lighter would also help keep the devices cool. My solar panel (Choetech brand) people have had the Sunpower cells warp in the heat in rare cases! Luckily mine is good still after last summer.

+Audioholic 01 completely agree, but just to clarify, I'm talking about the color of the fabric only. I don't want to put any of my devices in a black bag and let it bake in direct sun. But you're right, I didn't even think about how the heat affects the efficiency of the solar cells. They need to make a white one and a camo one.

It's not that big of an issue for me personally. I'd just put my phone in the back pocket if my pack like he did.

I was kinda looking for a 21.5 W ); Just kidding They both look like gear I want/need.

+PREPFORIT They make an 80 watt but it's like $400.

Can 21 Watts burn out a phone? My phone takes way less watts.

Great review my man!! I'm a back country hunter and use my phone as GPS. Can't afford for it to go dead. This is a game changer for me. Thanks again for the honest, practical, honest review.
