Hi Kay, love the garden serie! We've done our own (big) garden of our own the past 3 years and it was a lot of work, but in the end you gonna feel amazing! I'm looking forward to your next garden videos!

Hi Kay I have moved 22 times in my life and made a new garden at each house. I always put in fruit trees for the birds and bees. My suggestion would be, if you are putting borders down each side, that you don't make straight line borders. Making wavy edge (large and small waves) between soil and grass gives a lovely definition to the beds as larger plants can go against the fence and medium to small in the big waves at the front. Lavender and astrantia are always lovely. Thornless roses because of Charlie and Nepeta (catmint) for Rory and Echo. Scented plants are a must, especially honeysuckle and viburnum burkwoodii and philadelphus (mock orange blossom). You will find the garden will just evolve to your personal taste.

Preparation...is the starting point for many jobs and always seems to be the hardest time...but in the long run.... You will be guaranteed to reap your rewards...and enjoy the fruits of you labour....when buying plants .... choose the position..like you said ...mot if your sunning spots are at the bottom ...so make sure you also have some shaded parts for Charlie....( Which I am sure you already know) . But maybe check see if there is a free app that you can make a planned diagram...you can click on plants and move them round the garden...etc ..it creates great ideas ...it will be filled before you know it....well done on making a start 🎉...

The gaps in the fence is to let wind through, less likely to be damaged. I got some of those bamboo rolls, if you pay for a good quality they last, look good and if they get blown down it takes minutes to staple back up. Good luck with the renovation!

I've been hoping and looking SO much forward to this!! :D I one saw in Gardeners World or something like that, that if you plant a tree that blocks the so that you can't see it from the garden (something with angles something something) you can block so that the neighbours can not see and you get more privacy. This will as well help with the clocked grass, because the trees will soak up much more of the water with their roots :) Can't wait for the next episode :D
@sirih90129 күн бұрын
As a garderner and also someone that would like some more privacy, I would start to plan for some trees that in time would block out most of the views from the other houses. Go around and see where it strategically would be best. Then you have some structure to start plan paths and flowerbeds from. If you plan to grow something edible, have it close to the kitchen door so it is easy to pop out and get it whilst cooking, specially with a small one you won't have the time to go far.... Lastly I think the ground is compacted from the building process, and to be honest they just finish of with about 10 cm of top soil the rest is often crapy soil and kind of gravels and debris that is left from the build... so dig bigger than usual holes when planting and maybe try to rise the beds a bit, helps with drainage. So excited to follow along your new gardening adventure! Best luck and have fun! 😊

I love this kind of slow paced video that shows a reasonable amount of progress. The big before and afters are satisfying but it's easy to feel like every day and every project needs to be dramatic which can be discouraging because it's not realistic.

Love your garden vlogs - I saw another KZbinr once who had neighbours directly overlooking their gardens high fence. She put those tight wavy style feather boards on top of her fence - they looked quite sturdy and were solidly framed - they not only looked good, they did a very good job of privacy in their garden. She had painted them with dark grey paint which was trendy at the time and planted some randomly spaced trees in front of them - tall, slim trunks and ball shaped foliage. It was really nice and did the main job of privacy whilst still making room for when the foliage grew and gave some natural cover. However you do it I look forward to watching it all unfold. 😊

The drainage issue looks quite severe but don’t despair! I follow a KZbinr ‘Sow Much More’ who uses the no-dig method. She has had two waterlogged newbuild gardens and has successfully dealt with them by buying in a a few dumpy bags of topsoil and compost, placing brown cardboard onto the ground (attracts worms and suppresses weeds/grass) and then putting the compost and topsoil on top, adding woodchip mulch for any bare areas. It is the most eco-friendly and manageable way to give your garden the best head start. I did it in my newbuild garden and my plants are so healthy and I have so many birds and lots of lovely wildlife. 🌸 🐦 🐸 🐝 🦔 🌱 🌳 Depending on where you get sun in your garden, you could plant some nice hedging (I love grisellinia as it is a lovely bright green and it’s evergreen) around the seating area in raised beds (using your wooden sleepers) as it would help you feel more enclosed, private and create a nice defined year-round ‘zone’ and give you something nice to look at (and birds to nest in) during the winter when there isn’t much else visual interest. Definitely start with hard landscaping/soil nourishing, then choose structural plants (trees, hedging & shrubs) and then choose flowers last…most people make the mistake of choosing the flowers first! Can’t wait to see what you do with your lovely outdoor space! Xx
@TheSleepFairy.10 күн бұрын
Also, think about where you want to have paths - you don’t need the stress of a mud bath every winter when you need to go to the other end of the garden for something 😁 👣 I wish I could share pictures of my garden with you for inspiration. The one downside to KZbin is not allowing pics in comments!

We had the same problem. First of all sort out the drainage, then change the soil where you want to have flowerbed. Honestly, don’t waste your money buying new plants without sorting these two problems out. We ended up buying plants twice as at the beginning we thought we are saving money and we added some compost on top of the clay! Did not work at all!!! Good luck 🤞

Great start to an amazing yard Kay! I also have terrible soil. I live in North Carolina and have red clay that is completely waterlogged like yours. For my garden beds, I try to stick to plants that like clay soil and don’t mind wet feet. For the rest of the yard, a thick layer of grass helps to wick some of the water away. You’ll get there with as much effort as you and Dom always put in. Slow and steady wins the race with gardening. As always, thank you for what you do!!❤

You need to incorporate garden lime to the clay soil it creates flocculation of the clay particles. That will make it crumbly rather than slimy. You can get it from a good independent garden centre or online. Ideal to do now as the rain will take it in & it’ll be absorbed. It’ll be difficult to mix but you can just sprinkle in top x

As a mum of boys (grown up now) can I suggest you think of circular routes for your son to ride his car/bike on with an in and out to your patio. My two loved chasing each other on their bikes around the garden. Plus think of secret corners/areas for him to use for den building later on as well as wildlife areas and a veg growing area. You will get there, just think one corner at a time.

Hi Kay i wach someone on here that had clay soil they dug it out 2foot down then they put soil from the garden center in and turfed it but they had a much smaller garden than you have perhaps you could do that just on the borders so that your plants grow the outher alternative would to see what plants would grow in clay conditions can wait to see how it all turns out i like your idea of having the arch as your way into the rest of the garden. I would get some buterfly ( buddllia ) bushes at the bottom of the garden they grow quite tall but not too tall but will block the neighbours view xxx❤

Some climbing plants to soften the fences are a good idea but make sure you don’t get anything that grows too big!! (Just had to remove a rose that was too tall for our 6’ fence! It was well established after a few years and the roots were a nightmare!). I have gone for an upright Weigela called towers of flowers. 😊. Rose Zephrine Drouhin is a beautiful fragrant rose that’s thornless!! Will grow beautifully on an arch! 😊 We had a 2 year old garden when we moved in 20 years ago. Once I started gardening I discovered it was heavy clay and full of builders rubble! It’s been an interesting journey and I eventually took up the grass - small, north facing lawn that was waterlogged or completely dry! I did have a lawn when the grandchildren were young. I now have lots of plants and a couple of trees- olive trees that I bought from Morrisons!! Don’t forget to take into account the direction of your garden and what plants will like. Open fencing might be good for wind damage, but plants will help screen. Good luck!!

Loved this video, we also have very heavy clay soil and it definitely gets better over time by adding lots of sharp sand and compost, you could try to aerate the lawn and then also brush sand over it to help with drainage and the more plants and trees you add the more there is to soak up the moisture. Your other garden was lovely and I’m sure this one will be as well😊

Raised beds are great if your soil is poor and stops little feet trampling on plants, trees and climbers too for privacy. Trees gives you somewhere to hang feeders to for the birds and in time perhaps a child friendly pond to encourage wildlife too. I also have some decking with lots of containers for variety in different seasons . It will look fabulous xxxx

We inherited a 2 year old garden that was basically lawn with one tree fern! Sadly it died after a very hard winter, so I began putting in borders. In the past 18 years I have worked to improve the soil- lots of compost, digging out the bad clay and putting in compost and sand when planting new plants. I would suggest some climbing plants to soften the fences and improve privacy are a good idea but make sure you don’t get anything that grows too big!! Kay, I would strongly suggest you start with a drainage solution. A French drain is what you need. No point adding sand or compost to such wet soil. Don’t waste your money on plants until you sort that first. Speak to a professional landscaper who can advise you. It would be heartbreaking to do all that work and spend money when you still have that quagmire of a garden that your son won’t be able to play in if there is any rain.

This is true, we're debating what to do for the better. Even if we double boarded it, we'd make sure it had gaps for the wind to blow through or it would blow down then we'd have no privacy at all 😂 Unfortunately it doesn't have gravel boards so will need replacing in time as it's likely to rot, but we will see.

With clay soil drainage will always be an issue but it can be managed. Look for online articles for solutions but chances are the gravel was put down by the patio doors to assist with drainage. There is no point putting flags down without sorting this first. Go to a local garden centre where they will give you advice on suitable plants for your garden conditions instead of just buying the pretty shrubs in bloom, only for them not to survive - we have all made mistakes, that's gardening. Learning is fun and very satisfying, good luck. Ps Drawing a plan is always a good idea.

Thanks lovely! We did compost in our last garden but will see if we do here as it take a long time for it to become compost you can use. Our local council takes food waste with our garden bin so that makes me feel better about it as at least it's being composted somewhere 🥰

Planting an elder tree helps with a water logged garden.

@Livingthelifeyoulove Sorry, Kay, a misspelling. I meant an alder tree x
@gailots9 күн бұрын
You are saying Pergola correctly. PER-go-la. Thé gals in the fence are perhaps to allow wind to pass through without the whole fence panel being damaged or coming down. Also probably cheaper. Maybe move the bed to along the fence near kitchen and plant with fresh herbs!

It might be a lot less expensive to plant vines/climbing plants like jasmine instead of buying the lumber for fence? And in between new bushes it should give you privacy

Also pavers to make a patio up against the house and walkways thru the yard or oops! garden.😊

Hi Kay, love your calm & inspired living. Will you eventually let your cats out (on harnesses) like before?
@Livingthelifeyoulove10 күн бұрын
I'm so happy to hear this 🥰 Honestly we're not sure. They've very settled here and happy inside so we're thinking if we were to let them out it would be a small catio rather than harnesses like the last garden.

Maybe you could invest in a garden designer initially who knows about new builds, just to give you some ideas and advice; you don't have to follow everything they say but it may help it all feel less daunting. You are both so young, you could save a fortune on plants by growing from seeds or cuttings, so a greenhouse is a great idea, and I reckon Dom will love pottering in one. There is no rush and it is a mammoth project so maybe don't focus on 'the end' result but enjoy each task as a pleasurable time spent outdoors.

Kay, you need some gardening gloves. All the way through this, i kept thinking those white gloves are going to be ruined! The same with your slippers. Get some garden shoes x

Please both buy some wellies as you are at risk of getting trench foot!!
@Livingthelifeyoulove10 күн бұрын
We have wellies but for the amount of time we were in the mud they weren't needed, so we usually potter in our garden shoes. When it comes time to do more work in the mud we likely will wear better shoes/wellies 😊

Gardens take forever, you’re taking raised beds out and I’m putting them in😄 And so sorry to sounds a negative note, but I’d be really cross if my neighbour hung something on my fence their side, particularly something as heavy as that mirror, as it will undermine the integrity. Having said that however, I do live on the coast and the general, year-round, high winds cause anything strung-up outside to swing around and even light stuff like hanging baskets will eventually undermine the structure it’s attached too (my neighbour lost half a wallbrick last year due to the swinging of his hanging basket). Perhaps your neighbours were more than happy for you to attach that mirror though

Raised beds are lovely, they are such a nice feature i'm sure yours will be lovely! 🥰 The fence on the right side legally belongs to us so if anything were to happen to it, it would be down to us to replace it.
@carliem94949 күн бұрын
@ phew! that’s ok then as everything points to it not being yours …. ie good side of the fence facing your garden, positioning of the posts - in contrast to the fence the other side which has different post placement and the “wrong” side facing your garden. However ….. good to know you were aware ☺️
