It is spruce not pine. This type of commercial forest is far too dense so no good for wild life. This forest will be replaced by a more natural forest which can be walked through and friendly to all beings.

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I feel a special connection to this beautiful song, having followed the three of you on your Skye Life adventures from Day1. Your clear, strong voice is incredible to listen to... with lyrics that we all can sing & relate to. I enjoy all of your music & appreciate you taking us along to see/hear the entire, really interesting process. Cheers S, W & JS ☕🍰

Up here in the Yukon, they aren't only thinking commercial use, but also fire breaks, healthy ecosystem, disease control etc. Planning wildlife corridors, not impeding waterways or affecting natural springs, leaving trees with nests of protected bird species, offering deer/elk/moose 'new growth' food & safe cover from preditors, leaving some fallen trees for small wildlife habitat, open areas for plant regeneration...the list of rules & regs is thankfully long. @@tkaald

Here in my area of the U.S.A. we often have small stands left in an area that has been cut for several different reasons. 1 to act as natural seedings of mixed growth. 2 to stabilize the land where it is now newly exposed. 3 to protect new young trees from damage. 4 to protect water ways. 5 the land will be left for three to five years to natrally seed from the left stands to natralize and then farmed seedlings are planted. These fill in the areas that are still not producing natrally seeded trees, these are usually desired mono cultured trees, this also allows for the soil to regenerate and the protective understory to reestablish. Much of this fast growing under growth is cut down at this time to act as fertilizer for the transplants and as protection for the new trees. The roots and stumps from the cut brush is left to stablize the soil while the young trees grow and take over as the soil stabilizing and this brush also acts to keep competitive under story from killing the young trees. Much of the under story is very fast growing and would shade the trees and utilize the nutrients the young trees need. I hope this perspective helps.

SOME OF THEM ARE THE OLDEST IN THE STATE, ONE IS THE LOWER SWEDISH CABIN BUILT IN 1655 ANOTHER IS THE SAMUEL LEVIS HOUSE BUILT IN 1692. I REALY UNDERSTAND YOUR SONG, SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE LIVED IN THESE OLD HOUSES THEY HAVE HAD GOOD TIMES AND BAD TIMES THEY HAVE LOVED AND THEY HAVE DIED. The big Sitka outsiders are too big and hairy for the Harvester to fell. They're usually felled by hand and the first sawlog cut off the bottom, so that the harvester head can grab them. At least you'll get some new views of the coast, at least until the replacements grow up! Great video folks!👍

My husband and I were on Skye and visited Scotland this past September. We saw the tree harvesting and replanting and wondered how the residents felt when their view changed so dramatically. Interesting you touched on that in this video. We stayed near Harrapool, and unfortunately the coffee Bothy in Broadford was closed so I couldn’t pick up any of your cards. I know it's sad to see so many trees to be felled. Yet, as Willie said, it's a crop, planted for use. And believe it or not, you and Willie use a lot of the product from those trees. Guitars, drum sets, envelopes, paper for painting, writing, boxes for mailing, wood fireplaces, and even for the boat. Where I live, pine is the crop. And it seems like every month a plot of trees is harvested. Then replanted. There are no old growth forests near me. So sad. But that is the way. Those trees are so straight and the branches seem to only be at the top. Must be used for power lines or even building timber. But either way, you still have a few years before your plot is felled. So enjoy the mushrooms and other foraging goodies you can.

I went to Skye, while driving around the Highlands, a bit over over 30 years ago, and fell in love with it and the people. I'm home now, in tropical Central Queensland. Crocodiles, sharks, snakes, cattle and blowflies, cyclones and floods and I love it. I chould have chosen to stay in the Highlands when I had the opportunity, but came home with the memories of another country, life and time. What does “second growth” mean?
@roybennett2063 ай бұрын
@@rosemarymee It means its the second time that this plantation has been harvested, many of these plantations were created in the 1940`s due to timber shortages during the second world war and to supply the mining industry with pit props, first harvest around 1980`s, (first growth) then replanted and now harvested again 40 years later (2nd growth) and will be replanted again to be harvested in the 2060`s and so the cycle continues, although many of these plantations are now being replanted with native trees, not these which are fast growing non native Sitka spruce, lodgepole pine or larch

Yes and also no...depending. Biodiversity is the key to sustainablity writ large. Planting the same tree over and over again on the same soil will depleat and ruin the soil and all the biodiversity within and without. Management and community watchfullness and participation are also key. I can look at Bulgaia as a good example of how to do it right.
@Del213 Жыл бұрын
“Forrest’s are a resource” thanks for that insight Grizzly Adams. It’s not always necessary and generally health of forest isn’t a primary consideration. Rare that those trees are even native to those areas.

Sorry you’re losing your forest view.. I saw a lot of deforestation of what are probably private tree farms in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of sky when I was there last last year. I thought overall there was an attempt to reforest much of Scotland on public lands? You’re out west there is heavy clearcutting of forest specially in Oregon where the coastal range is basically a private tree farm.. you don’t see as much clear cutting when you cross the border into California

Forestry is mind blowing. You fell the trees then replant in the knowledge that you will not see the new trees felled. We owned a forest that we chopped and replanted but i will never see the trees to maturity, it makes you think about the short time you are here. It is growing a crop on a 30 - 50 year cycle.

Fabulous song, Willie has a lovely singing voice. I want to buy his jumper! I hate to see trees cut down but these are a monoculture, as Sarah said we need native trees, we need forest lungs now as well as wood which we are very wasteful of considering how long it takes to grow. My dad used to cut our Christmas tree out of the top of a conifer because none of us kids wanted a tree cut down! 😉

The forestry service is a constant sore point with most folks in Colorado. Between contracts with lumber/paper companies, lightning storms causing forest fires, and the infestation of the pine beetle (which wiped out whole mountains of trees which had to be clear cut and burned), residents spend a great deal of time butting heads with the forestry service about looking after state park lands. The cutting will probably lead to flat pack furniture and toilet paper. It depends on the size of the company. My biggest objection is that the lumber company replants one type of tree (lodge pole pine) and doesn't replace different varieties of trees.
