Living The Skye Life

Living The Skye Life

Күн бұрын

Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to 'Live The Skye Life'!
In this episode, the 'Skye-Lifers' continue with their scratch build shed, despite the wild Skye weather. Will we manage to get it finished??
Plus, lots more updates from island life - at home haircuts, food shopping with a difference and even a cheeky takeaway (of sorts...)

So in the island of Hawaii, the hand gesture from Richard is often made and means “hang loose” I believe. I think this was originally used by surfers as way to encourage each other to “enjoy the ride.” But I could be making it all up! 😂 I just thought Richard must have been a surfer in his younger days. 🏄‍♂️

Willie, my husband, who was in the US military for 20+ years now cuts his own hair with a Wahl shaver. He will cut his hair and I will check it for missed spots. Then he uses the shaver to shave! Hair cuts are over $20 US dollars for him. And his hair is shorter than yours! I, still have to have mine cut as Jim has tremors and can't hold a comb or scissors steady. But at least we save on his! Last year, I got a mush Mellon called Dewlish. It was a bright yellow mush Mellon. So sweet, very few seeds and lots of mellon to rind. I saved the seeds. I planted the seeds a week ago. I now have over 20 new mush melons sprouting in the large planter. I hope they continue. I also planted an avocado seed from the mexican dinner we had. I hope it sprouts too!

It's great seeing your progress 😊We live on Raasay so , when shopping, we have to factor in the ferry ⛴️ too. So funny seeing you at the hardware store, we, like you, are there frequently atm 😅So much to do, even 2yrs on😊. Like you, we completed the build(s) in the 1st year, Now, we've moved on and have a few seedlings 🌱 which will hopefully feed us! Jack spaniels is gorgeous. We have a bernese mountain dog who loves the "Skye life ". Thank you for taking us oldies on your journey xx PS.... The chip shop in Broadford by the refill store is a grand treat too 😊 Like you, we've become accustomed to no takeaways😂. Take care. Stay safe and well x

We live on Rousay, also an island, so have ferry trips to the Orkney mainland for our main food shop. We try to only go once a fortnight, taking our rubbish for recycling as there is no recycling collection on the island. We only moved here last September, so still getting used to our different way of life…loving it though! 💕

Just a thought . . . if you'll be storing wheeled items in the shed it is easier to get them in and out if you have a ramp vs steps. I learned that one the hard way, myself. I'm also part Scottish so I get a thrill out of Sarah's cost comparisons because, heaven knows, we Scots are tight! Love and hugs from me in New Mexico USA.

Richard's gesture is indeed the 'Hang loose' blessing. West Coast California has been a Surfer culture almost as long as the Hawaiians❣ I continue to use another popular gesture 'Peace blessing'. oh yeah, I use the 1 finger salute from time to time! Can't say for sure that one is a blessing but oddly satisfying. The shed is magnificent! Bright Blessings for intermittent Sunshine!

Wow! The sheds coming along nicely, won't be long and you can start using it. Loved seeing Jack having a haircut, he knows he will get a treat afterwards of course. I have been cutting my own hair since I was 15yrs old and still do at 77yrs old, I used to cut the hair of my three son's, my dog also and the amount of money I have saved over the many years is tremendous. I use my local grocery shop/CoOp for milk and veg and a few things delivered free each week to my door, once a fortnight I get taken to the big supermarket and buy there plus I stock up if things are on special price that I use. I make my own bread and cakes but can't be bothered making biscuits so I buy them. I love your way of thinking, reusing and admire you both for making such a big effort to life in freedom and beauty. Thank you 💕🇦🇺

The correct spelling for it in the Good ole USA is gesture. But sometimes people everywhere know the correct spelling for words but without meaning to they just put down something close to what they are thinking. There are lots of words that happens to. ( Especially as you get older the brain goes south😂..yucky old covid can give ones brain misses/mistakes too. One of the things it does to some is disconnect thinking a good bit..eventually it mostly recovers)

It could be worse, Sara, we had snow yesterday! Nearly 6 inches! We had some pot holes this winter that were big enough to do the backstroke in!!! Needless to say, the city now finds it easier to put in a message phone number to report holes that need filling. We have two seasons in Colorado...Winter (only when it's snowing or below zero temps.) and Construction. This year, you could grow herbs, cherry tomatoes, and peppers in pots. Not a lot of effort for plants that can be grown indoors or out.

Great video. I like to break down of the food shopping. When I was a teenager I used to drive me crazy with one of my grandmothers because she would shop in three different stores. I didn't understand it I'm like stick with one store.😅 But as an adult I see what she was doing. You have to work the plan for the time that you're doing it. It'll be awesome when you can plant your own garden I think it's smart you're doing your hardscape right now. I would encourage you to do some container gardening just as a test pilot to see how things fair. Maybe a large container with six or seven different types of herbs in it. ❤

That is the "hang loose" wave, from Hawaii. There was an amazing man, friendly to everyone, who lost his three middle fingers while working in the pineapple fields. When he waved, he only had his thumb and pinkie! People started emulating his 'wave' and then it spread across the islands and then thru the surfing community.

You can freeze your fresh veg and bottle some fruit. There are some great guides out there which will help you with the longevity of your food orders and it's not expensive or time consuming. :)

One way of saving money is to bulk buy tinned goods such as tinned toms, beans, lentils etc and dried goods on a delivery or top up when you go to aldi etc and then support your local to buy fresh meat, bread and milk etc. Do you not freeze your bread Willy makes? You need to set aside a space in the byre or shed for a store cupboard. We use our understairs cupboard as a larder and find it invaluable x

Another quality video I could watch you two for hours. Agree about enjoying the impulse of going to a supermarket and seeing something you fancy, although when I do I spend so much more and tend to end up wasting more. The shed is looking really good your such a turn your hand to anything guy Willie, perfect for the life your making yourselves.

This is so interesting. We live on a small tidal island connected to another larger island with one small shop, a hotel and a cafe. Tescos deliver to the main island (from Oban) and then we go and fetch it if and when the tides are right. We end up getting the same things over and over again and people can't understand why I get so excited grocery shopping when we get to the mainland. Love your channel.

Tesco delivery is really good and if there are items with a short date or you are not happy with, the driver will take them back and refund it. The drivers are all very friendly too!😊

Super film this week. Chips looked lush but did you have vinegar and salt? Richard is a legend with the shed build. Your puppy was so good having his hair trim too. Great to have all the grocery shopping options available to you. Hope the weather is improving now.

Hello Willie and Sarah and Jack, When I was younger my Dad flew medical in and out of the jungles of Belize and we had a house on Ambergris Caye. The grocery store on the island were very small My Mom called it the grocery hut. So when we could get my Dad to fly us to the main land then we would get real grocery. I was 16 when they started fly down there tell I was 20. I did Spring, summer here in Texas and Fall and Winter on the island. I miss my Mom and Dad very much God bless there souls. Are y'alls cars really small or are the roads very narrow? The shed is looking great can't wait to see it done. Love all your videos! Have a blessed week.

Our roads are very narrow! Mostly single track here, with passing places every so often to let cars coming the other way get by you 😊

Had to laugh at Asda and Tesco doing deliveries in the Coop car park. It’s a long drive from either Inverness or Fort William but there is clearly the demand.
