I have a literature study for Maniac Magee & The Giver we went with Novel Tie from Rainbow Resources. Instead of writing i am just going to do the questions out loud and discuss. I combine my son and daughter 1 year apart for literature.

We are on the last book of the Anne of Green Gable series. Wish there were more than eight books. 😂❤ We have loved them so much. IEW didn't work for us. My granddaughter didn't like the videos at all. She enjoyed Fix It Grammar though. Apologia is awesome. We decided to do unit studies this year. Have never done that so we will see how it goes. 😬 This year will be our second year with Saxon Math. Never thought I would make a switch to Saxon, but it has made a huge difference for my math challenged granddaughter. God Bless Leilani ❤

Hi! I am a newer homeschooler so I am still learning about all these curriculums. With IEW my understanding was you could do year 1 level A and then only complete level 2 if they need more help- otherwise move onto to theme based writing. I have two girls that will be using year 1 level A next year (4th and 6th) and a 10th grader that did not get any writing instruction in the public school using year 1 level C. Just curious to hear your thoughts.

I’ve never heard that advice but you could do it that way. Theme based is always going to be more teacher intensive. Because of the videos, Structure and Style will be less teacher intensive. It’s always good, no matter what grade they are in in elementary school, to start with year one level A. However, for your 6th grader I would’ve suggested level B year one. That is because IEW is based on development. Level A is for elementary, level B is for middle school, level C is for high school. I would use 1B for them because of that. The need more help? It’s sequential, it you go the structure and style route then doing year 1, 2 , ect… is best. But it is still okay to jump to theme based. Or you could start with themed based and jump to S&S. It’s very flexible and both compliment each other. Hope that helps.

I completely agree about Apologia. We have done zoology 1 and 2 and are doing human body next year (and probably the physics and chemistry one the year after). My kids love it, I love it, and I don’t see us changing anytime soon. Also, I did Total Language plus with both my kids last year and it went well, though their writing is lacking (you would need to supplement with IEW or something). The Charlotte’s Web one with my 3rd grade daughter is such a sweet memory. ❤

Just an fyi, Apologia Human Body is a LOT meatier and deeper than the zoology books. I tried the human body book in 4th grade after having done no formal science curriculum prior and it did not go well. If your kids are upper elementary or middle then the human body might work, but if they are younger it will likely go over their heads.

Katie is Life in the Mundane. She’s a good friend. But I also want to add, look into Orton - Gillingham. It’s methodology is specifically created for kids with Dyslexia. It can be pricey to get a person certified to support you, however through watching students use this method, I have seen kids jump leaps and bounds. (I evaluate homeschoolers in Florida, so I see a lot). One in particular was very severe, she was 12 and jumped from a 2nd grade level to a 5th grade level in one year. Eventually the method became part of her lifestyle and she is now on par with her peers. If you cannot afford a certified coach, look at All About Reading and All About Spelling. Both use this method and have been successful. Also google “curriculum Orton-Gillingham”. That too will help.

Do you feel like Fix It grammar "teaches" grammar or do you feel like it's a gradual review of grammar already learned? I'm thinking about throwing my 7th grader in who has had minimal grammar up until now.
