We absolutely must support and defend English universities ! "Both of them" With thanks to Sir Humphry.

Ironically until 1832 there were literally only two universities in England both catering then as now to the children of the political and financial elite whilst Scotland had five universities by 1600

If you can achieve 3 B's at A level in a mediocre/underachieving school, with a less than smooth home life, you have higher resources within than someone who has had a gilded upbringing and gets 3 A*. You will strive and fight for every achievement with a hunger the gilded wouldn't know

Hi Prof. thanks again. I usually keep well clear of patriotisms, but there is a compatriot of mine for whom I am full of admiration and in all my long years working as a health professional with UK elite surgeons and surgical professors I never met any who knew who Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal was. Amazing to think that his brain discovered the workings of everybody's brains for which he got a Novel Price in 1906. It would be wonderful if you would pay him a small tribute in your channel.

To me the main issue is employers overvaluing degrees because it came from a certain institution. Law and medicine for instance is taught to a higher standard at other universities. However, there's jobs that are only available to those who went to Oxbridge.

Just a suggestion. Since the ancient universities are so well thought of, the government should found four new ancient universities as a matter of urgency.

Sadly universities have become “ sausage machines “ we individuals on the global stage with degrees from elite universities who are utter idiots eg Truss and Johnson- at best their honed skill is deceit, with severe lack of anything new or progressive in any field.

you might know this one i can't remember if anyone has said this quote but im sure I've heard it somewhere it goes: "The biggest idiots in the room talk loudest, so the smart people can't be heard" or this one: "I don't claim to be intelligent, because if i get something wrong then everyone will think I'm stupid" but i this one was Albert Einstein.. I'm not 100% sure though. Edit: I only put this because it really does seem like the Tories and reform and obviously over in the states with the republican trump takeover... a lot of big idiots talking very loudly and claiming to be intelligent while also showing their remaining brain cells jumping ship.

Another brick in the wall by Pink Floyd comes to mind when looking at what we have had to live through and are probably still living through. 🤔 I had to listen 👂 to the change from grades a to g at GCSE and hear that a level 4 is a pass, which used to be a grade c/d. If you work upwards to the new level 9 you have gone beyond a and the 🌟 s into an utter state of madness and decline. 🤔 It was time to get out.

Edinburgh and Oxford are going into Ai in a big way especially with bots going into the head and doing a medical job.I would be surprised if the LSE have reached that stage yet.I know because my cousin works there in Edinburgh as a administrator.

Regarding the admissions process for Oxbridge, is there not still an ethos of favouring 'PLU' (i.e., People Like Us) on the part of admissions tutors? When combined with the 'old boys' network' of admissions tutors and current staff at their public school alma maters, this still renders it extremely difficult for state-educated secondary pupils 'with potential' to compete with their public-school equivalents who have a ready-made 'in' to the most prestigious universities?
@idacoetzee18 сағат бұрын
Primary and high school education should be transformed to focus on what individual students are interested in- from a young age nurturing their interests will help integrate it with all the basics eg reading writing and math skills which are expanded to specialized skills as they progress through school where once graduated from high school they will be competent in many fields of employment that a degree would not be of much benefit, universities should be for the few who want higher specialized degrees in arts, medicine, science and engineering.

Truss got into Oxford because her Dad was known. Johnson got in because he did Classics and that was a way for duffers to get in without competing against swotty Stste School oiks. I advised a person from an FE College who got into Oxbridge. Coincidently she was also the most middle class well spoken person there (long story short.. The best way is for all A Stsr students who want to go to be selected by lottery. But then that would destroy the Business case for Indrpendent Sixth Form schools

What bothers me in the Uk is the Old Boys'network, and these Old Boys seem to have been in Oxford/Cambridge, and some of them were frankly not that briliant (Johnson comes to mind). Of course, girls have to some extent joined the boys now, but women are still kept out for being women, no matter where they have studied.

Somehow, listening to what you said about undergraduates, it sounds to me like you are hinting that undergraduates are seen like a pond from which they will fish their biggest prizes. But I cannot forgive them for nurturing idiots like Johnson, Truss and other such entitled would-be kings/queens of the world. What sort of teaching produces such awful minds???

He's not being merely rude. He's being carefully critical of a bad idea. And Liz Truss only cares about the UK as a rich woman cares about her Chanel handbag - it's an accessory for her ego. It's brand for her, rather than a vocation. It's aspirational, but not committed. Her true committment is to her own success. Even in her own mind she's not down with the travellers in 3rd class. She wants to be in 1st class, never mind the boat is sinking. She is a symptom of our malaise. She is not a deeply serious person, because she's not even interested enough to be serious about real leadership. She just bossed people around, and alienated everyone who was there to assist her. She wasn't interested enough to understand people's motivations to get them onside. Or to manage them properly. Whatever potential she had was wasted because she didn't do the real work to be ready to lead anyone, never mind the country. She thought she didn't need it. Just like the Conservative Party was cleansed of anybody who could think analytically to pursue the ambitions of Plutocrats before the needs of the country. That's why Truss was even thought as being credible. Nobody was thinking, as the lunatics were running the asylum. Truss got her chance and blew it. And the Tory party is on its way to oblivion. One Nation politics means bringing everyone with you. Not economic and political apartheid, and ego trips. You know when we're in trouble, when shallow people like Truss even get a sniff of power.
