Is there any benefit to amputating mid-shaft in a reptile as opposed to at the coxofemoral joint as is done in small animals?

I'm curious to know what caused the tissue to die or become infected on this Savannah? Also, will it have issues getting around in general, even in captivity? Actually got a kick out of the close up of it's face! Looks like a smaller version of a Velociraptor! :)
