When I lived in the Philippines, I was not forewarned about the presence of the lizards, and we had one in our house. So when I went to sleep at night and I kept hearing the “toku” sound, I was like ‘WHAT THE ACTUAL CRAP IS THAT?????’ No one ever shared with me the ‘yes or no’ tradition, but many of the Filipinos I knew were scared of the big ones, and claimed that they would bite and never let go. We called little ones “tiki’ and the big ones ‘toko.”

Can confirm I had one as a pet and he was the most aggressive reptile I've ever owned. Opening his cage was a gamble, he'd hide behind a leaf or something then suddenly attack.

I take it you lived somewhere in the Visayas or Mindanao? Ironically, the only lizard to ever bite me was a tiki (the small ones) which felt funny because they have no teeth.

I was wondering if that was the same thing. They get mentioned in the book "The Things They Carried", by Tim O'Brien. I asked my dad (a Vietnam veteran) about 'em but he'd never heard them called that. I suspect that nickname wasn't especially widespread before the book came out (you'd think a tidbit like that would have made it into one of the eight kajillion Vietnam movies that popped up after Apocalypse Now & Full Metal Jacket, at least), but I could be wrong.

I love how they have a positive connotation in her part of the Philippines, while in the one I was born in they were basically considered Satan's spawn or something. Even the way Karina softly imitates their sound " _tukku~_ " is really different from how I remember my uncle used to aggressivly yell *TUKOH* whenever he told stories about the beasts.

Here in the frozen north, we gotta pay some serious monies to get those guys and keep them in specially heated/lighted terrariums, so I'm always blown away hearing about these people who just get them chillin on the wall eating all their pests for free, no uvb bulb and no breeding dubias for them. WILD.

As a person from a tropical country where lizards creep on the walls all day (and where lizards shit on you from the ceiling), it took me a while to realize they need specific temperatures to thrive. I can't imagine how much effort it is to keep their needs met and to provide them bugs.
@LadyTroubadour
@LadyTroubadour Жыл бұрын
@@whiteshadow7584 To be fair the bugs are the easy part, put them in a nice warm box and feed 'em good and bam you have more than you know what to even do with, it's the specialty light bulbs that'll get ya price wise. Well and the fact that tokay geckos are renowned far and wide for having a very nasty bite they are very generous with XD This is why I personally keep a crested gecko and a viper gecko instead- no bite just cute LOL
