Because Gev triggers his damage on cast, you can cast your lizards pre-combat, have Gev ping the opponent for 1 while the lizards on the stack, and then they'll enter with +1/+1 counters on them automatically. You don't need to risk Gev in combat before getting your counters.

There's an argument to playing them over the restless vents, especially as a backup for damage triggers like "burning tree emissary at home", but yeah, this deck doesn't want too many taplands early

Standard is unplayable. Played 12 matches. 8 mono red aggro decks, 1 bunny deck, one otter deck and 2 random garbage decks trying some nonsense. Lands also suck so much. Why can't they have triomes just by default. Or better yet, proper dual lands. Tropical Island etc.
