I have a (non-scientific) theory that ASMR is related to anticipation for the unknown. An uncommon accent definitely helps building that anticipation, as it's a novel situation.

@@sanderd17 You could make the same argument about music, provided it's the first time listening. I'd pose that ASMR is more about the sensation of feeling secure, focused but not analytical, and receptive. As an ASMR consumer you are vulnerable to whatever sounds, you are comfortable enough to relax and receive new sensations, you are confident yet also hold an expectation. You are unwinding, you are not overanalyzing and being on guard of the complex social expectations of interacting with an accent, the potential racism or faux pas of not understanding. You are focused on the visual or sound, following directions (if present), and actively participating showing intent and anticipation. Passive listening with ASMR vids as background noise doesn't provide the same results, just as nobody relaxes to the fridge hum or clock tick, nor the unknown taps in the night. So to my point, an accent is little more than an additional sound effect that we open up to and actively let in without expectation. We are focused on it and allow ourselves to follow and enjoy the musicality of it, instead of the multiple stressors in interaction. Certainly anticipation of the unknown is part of it, but at the same time that sensation is part of why we click on any video. But with ASMR? I'd argue the "zen" of focused relaxation, allowing ourselves to just feel and respond without pressure to do so any particular way, and the comfort/ security/ confidence in opening up to the experience.
