This is just nature. I don't think people should be screaming on comment section without properly understanding the reasons behind this.The science of bird is different. Birds are not humans. There is not plenty of food for all of them so he kill the small chick which is weaker and that the other two can get proper food and grow relatively stronger rather than all three growing weak by getting insufficient food.
@cptairwolf Жыл бұрын
For those who have no clue what's happening here. In nature paired mates often produce far more offspring than they can afford to care for (safety in numbers) but often with birds they will kill and even est the weakest of the litter to give the stronger one a better chance at survival. The papa bird likely realized something was wrong with the runt of that brood and decided to take action. Thankfully we humans aren't so merciless. (Least not all of us)

He wasn't trying to swallow it, he was humanely killing the runt by crushing it so his siblings wouldn't slowly peck, kill and probably eat it, before unceremoniously tossing it to the forest floor. Circle of life. Brutal. Ive seen other vids of these same kind of birds doing the same kind of tihs, so I researched a bit and this is really a regular thing. its not just about what they can bring back for any one specific meal, but the cost of rearing children in general and how things are looking currently. Its like... If you got fired today, and your future prospects arent looking that great... You're going to start feeling that pressure pretty quickly. Kids require more and more resources the closer it gets to the time they leave; its no different for humans than it is any other animal. And especially in this case here, the later they make is decision, the more resources they waste on this one chick that could have gone to helping the others develop.

@barnowlwatcher4 жыл бұрын
I copied this from their website after translating it: “May 10 In the morning, one of the parents selected the smallest chick and destroyed it. So there is only a chance for two young people to grow up. In previous years, we have observed similar (parental) hatchery destruction in three cases observed with the camera in three cases, during which a total of 5 chicks were destroyed. (2017: 1 chick, 2015: two chicks, 2013: 1 chick). There is no “rule” as to which parent does this. So far, in each case, the smallest, weakest chick has been selected. One of the purposes of nest camera surveillance is to learn about their braking behavior, to which this belongs. The phenomenon also occurs regularly in species other than storks (eg coot). Old birds select in both active and passive ways, all depending on the species and individual.”

Infanticide, unpleasant at it may seem, often serves a very specific purpose in nature: conservation of limited resources by the killing and devouring of offspring that have practically no chance of growing to adulthood. This survival tactic decreases the stress on the parent(s) in providing food for a runt and recycles the nutrients of the unfortunate baby back into the ecosystem. And it also provides a quick snack for both exhausted parent and hungry younglings, as this video clearly demonstrates!

This is very common amongst many species. When an animal is born with a birth defect, the parent will eat them or simply abandon him, basically because it knows that baby won’t be a useful member for the species… I wonder what would happens if humans did the same.
The mom's will frequently get rid of the smallest chick too. I can't believe we tell children that storks bring babies when they parent like this.

The similar tragedies repeat every nest every year. I thought it won’t happen if less than 4 or 5 chicks, actually the parents must kill some younger/youngest during the brooding no matter the family size. The behavior is so annoying for nest watchers. Anyway, I am keeping watch them from beginning to end. I love black storks. Thanks for sharing. 谢谢分享。

Hi, liznm! ❤️ Nice to see you this ... birding season! I know that this is an important video to post - and I do honestly thank you for that - but I hate that particular behavior. Detest it. **** Please note that this comment is on the behavior ... not the channel’s owner. Much love always to liznm!!! 😘🥰😍 **** +++++ I’ve heard most of the arguments and explanations that are typically provided for this behavior. I understand that it is considered to be somewhat “normal” - or even quite typical - for some species; and that it falls under a “natural” behavior. ... Some will say ... 1) it’s “Mother Nature,” which always seems to be employed as a default phrase - if rather vague - for things we don’t like or approve of. ... Or perhaps ... 2) it’s simply “visual evidence of survival of the fittest,” which (if you ask me) just sounds like justification for an absolutely horrid behavioral trait that we, as humans, just can’t get our brains to comprehend. ... Or even maybe even ... 3) it’s a stork’s version of “hey, let’s get rid of the youngest/smallest to ensure an abundant supply of food, fish, frogs, snakes ... whatever ... for the remaining chick/s! And hey! Let’s try to eat this chick and get his siblings to help!!” Well, it might be “nature’s way, typical, common, survival, accepted, natural, or normal,” but, frankly, it just horrifies me whenever I see this behavior. And storks, in particular, seem to be the founding members of that particularly abhorrent societal behavior. Year after year, It always gets me upset (yes, I know, no one makes me watch ... and I really don’t ... I just very quickly scroll through it). But you know, after having seen this behavior over the years, I always end up with the same questions ... couldn’t you (the stork parents) just make that cruel decision a tad bit earlier in the chick’s life? Like maybe when you laid the third egg!? Or even maybe when it was even newly hatched?!?! Why keep it around and feed it, watch it grow, care for it and keep it safe ... so that some day in a few weeks you can just TORTURE the chick for over half an hour before it ultimately dies?!? Geez, it’s not even a quick death ... and it’s positively gruesome. And the chick typically seems robust and healthy! It’s just frightful!! Storks. They are beautiful. They are funny when they are being funny. But when they are just being ... storks ... they can be shockingly cruel and downright mean. Just think: storks have always been that beloved symbol of delivering babies to humans ... FOR REAL?!?!? I mean WTF?!?
@liznm-natur-channel4 жыл бұрын
DASH, they do it only if food is scarce. We had very dry years and this year is dry again. There is a massive lack of food for all animals, not just storks. We need rain! Climate change prevents successful breeding for many birds. Unfortunately, this will remain so because we are not doing anything to stop climate change.
@liznm-natur-channel4 жыл бұрын
BTW, I can't watch it too. It break my heart. I like these storks. For me it is a bad sign that the male knows that the food will only be enough for 2. Two are few. That means failure in brood. The probability that one of them will survive is very low. That's sad. They fly the dangerous way from Africa to us to breed here. They don't know that conditions have deteriorated significantly
@bbbrewin4 жыл бұрын
@@liznm-natur-channel I think you are correct that the male had come to know that conditions have deteriorated significantly. The chick looked healthy and behaved eager to live.

@@bbbrewin BTW: As information. The parents would not recognize if a chick is weak or sick. They don't monitor how much a chick eats. When a chick dies, it becomes part of the nest or is eaten. This is information from an ornithologist who has been studying these storks and has been observing them for many years. Among other things with trail cameras. I saw it myself on a camera. A chick has starved to death. It was getting weaker and weaker. The parents didn't notice and didn't throw it out of the nest. It was eaten.
