A profound review of F Scott Fitzgerald’s writings that illuminate America today. As concerned as I am about our current state of affairs here, I believe that the economic linkage among nations today may present a different challenge than America in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Thank you for this lecture. It has raised valid questions about the image of America and the reality of it. There is work to be done before giving up to the powerful forces in our world today.

The book is after all Nicks story and for Gatsby’s actions to make sense ; then think what Jay, Daisy, Tom and Meyer know that was beyond Nicks view of the world. The South after Cotton prices fell in the mid-1870s made the south a very poor place. Nothing could ever be as great a fantasy as the financial security and respectability Tom represented for her and her family. Meyer would know that sooner or later the banks he was dealing with would find a way to allocate all the blame for the frauds to him and his and Gatsby would be the perfect profligate fraud to blame a fraud on. And Meyers bootlegging operations were vulnerable to a more violent mob. And Tom would have made sure Daisy knew all this. So in the back of his mind Jay may well have known it was only a matter of time till someone with a gun, police or mob was coming for him. In that context his actions make a lot more tragic sense. And the book makes a lot more coherent story in the context of Fitzgerald’s personality.

Churchwell has discovered an important and neglected story by a great American. She delivers in 50 minutes more than most professors accomplish in a year. Amazing scholar.
