I bought my first Continental Rucksack in 1992. Used it for EVERYTHING for years until I caught it on fire. That was ten years ago. After months of research and trying to find my next go to pack, I purchased another Continental Rucksack. These packs are a great bang for the buck, and has survived many Northern Maine outdoor adventures. Thanks Dave. Great vid.

David, I bought my same pack 15+ years, gray, I added a couple patches to customize. Yesterday I replaced both the top flap buckles w/ Gear Aid Snap Bar Repair 1" buckles. It's has held up pretty well over the past years. When I was at the Bean store looking at at this style of pack, I compared it to the leather model and I choose the Cordura model for price and weight, and I had a gut the feeling that the leather would not hold up as well. I have been very happy with it. I use it mostly for EDC work pack and some day hikes. Very happy and when the time comes I will probably buy the same LL Bean pack. Thanks for listening.

I have the older waxed canvas version of that with leather bottom and straps, and brass buckles. Has fur lined shoulder straps as well. Excellent pack (the one I have anyway). The wife has had it for quite a few years in her car as a go bag or emergency bag
@KevinsDisobedience6 жыл бұрын
I got the same classic version as you. Do you think it was a mistake? It was a lot more money, definitely heavier materials, but I do wish it had straps for a be roll on the bottom and top. I've also found that the leather straps are starting to fray on the edges. I'm going to make a few mods that will perfect the pack for me, but I am curious to know what someone else's thoughts are.
@blackhatbushcraft6 жыл бұрын
I have the exact same pack and I'd say your review is spot on. It is definitely a bargain at it's price point. It is well built and comfortable to carry. It also has a couple of great features like the slip through pockets with the cinch strap. I also like that it has cinch straps on top and bottom for a blanket or clothing, although I wish the bottom straps were just a bit longer. All in all I think it is an excellent pack and one I am enjoying using.

Ive been carrying the same pack for about 4-5 years now. It's been phenomenal for everything I use it for. No complaints here. The only breakage I've had was the waist belt buckle when it got slammed by a car trunk closing on it.
@ozinga6146 жыл бұрын
I got that pack a year ago and carry it 5 to 6 days a week for work and it has held up extremely well I've used some cheaper LA police gear packs that only lasted 2 months. This one no quality issues yet my only complaint is the grab hand is to thin I always have 30 to 40LBS in it and the skinny handle can be hard on your hands. The side pockets could be 1.5 to 2 inches deeper to better accommodate 40oz kleen canteen bottles other then that no problems with the buckles or any thing else it's a great pack for the money.

Dave, I like your approach. My background is as a alpine guide and other mountain activities. I have used similar top load packs. They are classics if the right materials are used they hold up.

I have one and took it as a daypack to the Boundary Waters last year. Sprayed it with a water repellant. It worked very well and I plan to take it along this year.
@garywood7026 жыл бұрын
I have the very same pack and have been using it for at least a year now, maybe longer. I modified it by adding some brass toned D rings to it in a few areas to facilitate attaching a bedroll to top or bottom as I find the external bedroll straps to be too short for that task. This mod also allows me a place to hang some items including a roll of tape by clipping it to ring with a carabiner. I find this bag usually holds about everything I need for a few days in the outdoors. During colder weather I do wish it was about 10-15 liters larger but all in all, for the price, it's a darn good pack that I can make work with the mods I did.

I recently picked one up, and like you, have been pleasantly surprised. Great pack for the money, and holds everything I need. My pathfinder SS bottle, cup, lid and pot hanger fit perfectly in the side pocket along with a spoon I carved! Always enjoy your videos.

I have this pack and I had a tailor replace all the straps other than the arm ones with leather and buckle to make it last longer and look better in general. I actually adore this pack and noticed that you can wax it and the water just beads right off and it toughen the material more so.

I have the previous version of that bag. I handles loads above 20lbs poorly IMO. As a day pack it is functional. One note of warning: LL Bean no longer stands behind their products so don’t expect the pack to last.

Thanks for the video on a very nice product. I have been using mine for about 6 months and really like it. It is relatively comfortable for weights up to 35 lbs. and functions nicely. I question its long-term reliability, especially since Bean changed its "warranty" policy but it has held up nicely. The Khaki color is awesome for a bag for the woods. It would be nice if additional straps of the same color where available for each pack. I liked it so much I purchased a second one in Gunmetal (gray) which I use for traveling/urban use. It would also be nice if it was available in an alpine green variety and if a pack rain cover was available. There are a few changes i would consider for the pack. I think a pocket built into the inside of the pack top cover would be a nice addition, and/or with a map pocket, and I am tossed as to whether or not the side pockets would benefit from having draw strings like on the main pack and or slightly more substantial pocket covers. Some protection on the bottom would also be nice, and little pockets built into the waist belt. Overall, it is a NICE pack for the money and it is quality. I purchased mine when Bean was running a 20% off sale and free shipping. It came out to $63 plus tax for this home run pack. The only other change I might make is to make it just slightly larger/higher. I wish a bag like this was also available without the back padding and with a lightweight external frame. But that is what my Swedish LK is for.

I'm currently running a milsurp Italian mountain rucksack. Old school, but sturdy and roomy enough for all those things you just pulled out of yours. Plus space for a little dehydrated food, a life straw and a firebox. Even though it is lined, I waterproofed it with with some silicone for extra protection against rain.

I like mine but yes. The straps need to be longer to accommodate a bedroll or tarp being added to the outside of the pack. I may get some webbing and extend them myself. Seems they made them short so extra webbing didn’t make the pack look untidy.

So looking forward to your new book. KZbin is awesome, but it's often in the back of my mind, "what if it went away or I had to ditch it for some reason?" Hard copy of things - like books - will become very valuable again. I know you are one who has put the research and dirt time into what you write - it's not theory. This upcoming book sounds like it is going to build well on previous books. (Which I have several - and use!)

Dave, I have noticed in many of your new videos you are using more modern equipment, like the down sleeping bag and nylon tarp over the wool blanket and oilcloth tarps you used before.
