Just watched an LL COOL J documentary. After he wrote the song "I need love" he was heavily scrutinized and criticised in the industry from 87-90 with that track. He went to his grandmother for guidance and council. She told him "Todd, go to the basement and write a song, and knock 'em out" This was the response he took from those words from her about his treatment in the industry at the time.

Well if you wanted a hit commercial song in the 80's and 90's, you generally needed to make something that could be played on MTV, and the big radio stations. There's tonnes of rap in this era that has swearing and N words, but it never got plays so most people never heard it. Hell even LL Cool J has a track called "No Airplay" and basically addresses this, and it's full of swearing and N bombs. Soo there's a reason this song doesn't have cussing. Moonneey.

Plenty of good writers singers that I'm glad don't fit radioshit. but also too much marketing skills are wasted on people who have nothing but to be polite as guidelines. Reminds me of the Michael Jackson 'Beat It' song. There's a part you can hear knocking on the song because someone was actually knocking on the studio window glass, and Quincey Jones decided to keep it in. Also in the Jackson 5 song 'I'll Be There" he messed up the line about looking over the shoulder but they decided to leave it, flaws and all.

"Mama Said Knock You Out" is a hit single by LL Cool J from his album of the same name. The song famously begins with the line "Don't call it a comeback/I've been here for years." Before "Mama Said Knock You Out" was released, many people felt that LL Cool J's career was waning; his grandmother, who still believed in his talent, told him to "knock out" all his critics.[1] The song was produced by Marley Marl[2] with help from DJ Bobcat along with LL. The single reached number 17[3] on the Billboard Hot 100, was certified Gold by the RIAA, and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. The song takes various shots at Kool Moe Dee. The song was featured in the films The Hard Way (which LL Cool J also appeared), Gladiator, Encino Man, Bébé's Kids, Kangaroo Jack: G'Day U.S.A.!, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, Happy Feet Two, Fist Fight, and The House.
