You certainly had the right idea, at the time, these cine films are priceless.

Thanks, priceless now, pricey then; When I was young, film for the camera was quite costly for me - so my shots were brief, relevant and hopefully not boring - as some current, continuous running videos can easily become. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it. Thank you !

Regarding the Britannia Bridge fire ~ (the Tubular Bridge) I was the Bangor Fireman who received the initial call to this incident at 21.45 hrs. on the Saturday night in August 1970.

It was Cabs from Maesgeirchen and someone else that set fire to it!!

Once again many thanks for most interesting footage. How short sighted it was to leave a county town such as Caernarfon without a mainline rail link. It's hard to imagine now how busy Menai Bridge station was in the days of steam and it had the distinction of being in a different county from the town it served, it being on the other side of the Menai Straits! I made an annual pilgrimage along the North Wales coast line to spend my summer holidays with my grandparents on Anglesey and remember well the bustling shed at Bangor. On one occasion we were hauled by 46220 Coronation from Llandudno Junction onwards. Judging by her ex works condition I suspect she was on a running-in turn after a visit to Crewe works.

The answer to the "short-sightedness" of the the then Conservative government with dodgy Ernest Marples as Transport Minister comes in Heather's comment at 4:03 "much of this line has been converted into the A4086 road". A similar fate befell other stretches of line closed during the Beeching era. At least they kept Caernarvon open long enough for the Royals to have their Prince of Wales' Investiture in 1969!

Totally agree. How lovely would be to get off the train at Menai Bridge station and then walk over the bridge.

Great video. At 2:55 I think we see the Port Dinorwic incline? Am I right?

As I was unsure of this, I didn't describe the overbridge as such.

@@AlanSnowdonArchive I think it is unless someone can show otherwise. Fascinating before it also the tunnels behind Ty Golchi and before that the Menai Bridge station.
