Brilliant account of the 2 ladies , in hindsight what a brave couple they were , i visit Woodstock here in Ireland sometimes , a ruin now , but their presence is there im sure of it, they found peace in Llangollen and had a happy life together, women ahead of their time and they had an attraction to them that few possess, I would have loved to have met them ,

They must have had some money of their own. I can’t believe that other people paid for that huge house, the maintenance of it, the servants wages, the buying of curios for their collections that grew over the years, and the tools and other expenses needed to make a garden. The description of their daily activities seemed to say that they did no actual work of any kind, and there’s no way their one female servant did all the housework and cooking! To run a huge mansion like that took a small army of servants including gardeners. If their families cut them off, where did all their money come from? We’re all the letters they wrote actually begging letters?

The Butlers of Kilkenny , the Earls of Ormond , where Eleanor came from were rich aristocrats and the Ponsonbys , lesser aristocrats were well off, thats where it came from old boy. Their families loved them , just the societal norms of the day didnt allow for such relationships in Ireland at that time, thankfully they found Llangollen

“We never knew if their relationship was sexual” - and yet they entertained with Anne Lister! And they were buried together! Please don’t erase significant and important LESBIAN (yes! I said it!) relationships in history with terms that gloss over what was actually happening.
@Crowcus2 жыл бұрын
Well, truth is only they can know the nature of their relationship. But I think the amount of love they put in that house really shows their love for each other. That and the fact that they slept in the same bed lmao
@psyche82 жыл бұрын
They were also buried together with Mary Carryl their housekeeper. And I don't know much about Anne Lister, but I doubt the Ladies were the only ones who entertained her. On top of that, entertaining someone does not make you the same as that someone. And sleeping in the same bed in that era also does not automatically make you a lesbian. Sisters also shared beds. Look, not saying that they weren't lesbians, the Ladies certainly deeply loved each other, but I'd be a little more hesitant putting a label on someone that they denied themselves, and have no chance of confirming or denying. You wouldn't pull a gay person out of the closet now without their consent, then don't do it to someone you don't for certain know about, and has long since passed away.
@wordscapes56902 жыл бұрын
@@psyche8 And yet...they were lesbian. No offence, but as a non-lesbian..... you are not qualified to recognise the signs. ;)
@psyche82 жыл бұрын
@@wordscapes5690 No offence taken, but why are you assuming I'm not a lesbian? I think no one is qualified to say someone is LBGTQ 200 years after the fact, with only third hand evidence to go by, the signs have rather watered down by now. And I'm still not saying they're not either. I'm just saying that maybe other people's sexuality is not something for us to confirm, when they themselves have not.

@@leeanngraham5035 - Oh for heaven's sake! Stop being so judgmental. Jesus would not agree. Anything that brings people closer to God and spirit would be fine with Jesus. I simply thank God that Jesus was not nearly so uptight and condemning as many who claim to follow him... but don't get the TRUE message at all. And don't quote scripture to me puhleese! The Bible was put together (in it's present form) in 325 AD at the first council of Nicea - by the first 'fathers' of the Catholic church. BTW - I was raised a Catholic - but I am not blinded by ignorance, and I realize there is far more to the story.
