Overlooking the River Tywi estuary rests the ancient castle of Llansteffan. Adopting the site of an Iron Age fort and maintaining the wonderful views once used to spot the enemy. Equally beautiful is the nearby town of Llansteffan. With romantic shops and tranquility throughout, Llansteffan is perfect for any visit. The beach below the castle is huge and open for family activities all day.

---- Short History ----
- Set upon the site of an Iron Age fort. Llansteffan has been inhabited for millennia.
- The current castle was built by the Normans during their invasion of Wales after 1100.
- And was granted to the Marmion family.
- But in 1146, Maredudd ap Gruffydd of Wales captured it from the forces of the FitzGerald’s who were the leading Norman settlers of the region.
- The Normans managed to capture it again in 1158.
- It was in 1192 that the de Camville family refortified the castle with stone and added two towers.
- But Llywelyn the Great managed to recapture it for the Welsh in 1215.
- It was after this attack that the Normans added the Inner Gate and a round tower.
- During the 13th century it was captured by the Welsh and then the Norman de Camville family several times.
- And in 1257 the de Camville family added the Lower Ward. This included the Great Gatehouse, the Great Hall and the East Bastion.
- But by the 14th century it was in ruin.
- In 1403 and again in 1405 it fell to Owain Glyndwr, only to fall to the English in 1408.
- It was later granted to the Crown and the two-tower Gatehouse was converted into a residence.
- It was during the late 15th century, the Tudor Era, that the Barn was added, possibly over the site of the Great Hall.
- The 18th century Castle had only survived as part of a private farm.
- It was romanticism and tourism that kept it alive through the 19th and 20th centuries.
- It is now privately owned but open to the public.

Nice video, gorgeous location, awesome castle ruins. We're heading that way next week and wondered if there were many people about as I want to use my Mavic Air 2 to film around there. There's so many cool places to visit in west Wales I'm really excited.
