Now if you’ve ever traveled to Albion on east Cass Street and crossed over the Cass Street bridge, you’ve passed right by it. There is a little terrace type park called Lloyd Park which opened in 1980 named after Thomas T. Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd was the grandson of the Honorable Washington Gardner, and was the founder of the Albion Civic Foundation, which later became the Albion Community Foundation.
Tom loved the Kalamazoo River. He wanted to see a nice looking vibrant downtown district and envisioned the development of the Kalamazoo River as it flowed through Albion into our parks and recreation areas.
This quaint river front park has a fishing pier, benches, memorial trees plantings, plentiful shade trees, a flowing river, all within a stone’s throw from downtown Albion.
Speaking of stones, the park sits on the location and foundation walls of the White Mill, one of Albion’s Mills which was sadly lost to fire in 1974.
Lloyd Park has been the location of “lunch at the Lloyd”, hosted Friday concerts, and has been used by various musical groups and organizations throughout the years.
As of lately the park fell into disrepair as the stone walls began to drop their rocks and the trees became overgrown and was quite simply a danger to park patrons. A group of Albion residents, citizens, and businesses got together and after a little bit of hard work the park was completely redone and made safe for everyone to enjoy once again.
Whether it be by river, as you pass by in a canoe or kayak or by foot as you walk from the Albion college campus to downtown Albion, you can be proud to know that this little park, Lloyd Park, will be here for future generations for you to take a sit or to toss in a hook, or to host a concert or two. Lloyd Park. One of Albion’s gems. Worthy of our care. Caster cares.
The purpose of caster cares is to promote positive and measurable change in Albion and the surrounding area. We believe that when you support your community, in return, you have a supportive community.
