My only problem with the 25-50% bender rate for other nations is the Southern Water Tribe. Not sure if this is true, but I'm assuming there were no Fire Nation raids on the Southern Water Tribe between the raid that took Hama and the raid that killed Katara and Sokka's mom. This would mean there were no water benders born between Hama's capture and Katara's birth, around a 45 year difference. That's not really possible considering there were dozens/hundreds of people born in the Southern Water Tribe during that period, and none of them would have been water benders.
@4Tom4lepus43 жыл бұрын
@@taylorfrench6722 I know supposedly genetics aren't that important or sth, but I always thought the reason for the lack of water benders in the Southern Water Tribe was the fact that all the water benders who would have passed on the gene for waterbending were taken away - and Katara got it from Gran Gran, who was from the Northern Tribe. It’s not that they don’t have parents its more that they’re raised communally. A lot of indigenous, eastern asian, and pre colonial african communities had societies where raising children was a group effort and everyone helped. It’s implied Aang had parents but he had a very strong connection to Monk Gyotso bc Airbenders were nomadic and would leave their children to be raised by the monks, think of it like a monastery!

Yes and it's their culture and spiritual calling to seek detachment from earthly tethers. They may find love/affection with another person to be able to procreate and continue their lineage as a race, but their objective is to seek enlightenment, freedom and peace. Some explanation of air bending culture. Unlike other elements, all children of the air nation are airbenders, there were no non bending children, and part of the cultural training for airbenders is detachment from worldly concerns, and expectations. All airbending temples were split based on sex/gender of the people, where only women/girls went to east and west temples and men/boys went to north and south temples to be trained. However once airbenders were trained they could either chose to remain in the temples to train next generations or travel the world, fall in love, get married if they want. but if they have airbending kids, the children would have to return to the temples to train. The monks and nuns that stayed at the temples would meet every few years and reproduce to also populate the nation as well as the nomads who found love across the world. Furthermore spiritual purity is very important for airbending, and airbenders that do not follow a spiritual path can lose bending ability over the years

The eastern and western air temples were entirely women/nuns and the northern and southern air temples were entirely men/monks. Now even though that fact has been made clear, what's not is how that works with how and when having kids works since the air nation is/was the only one among the four elements that every single member of their people were all benders. The only part we know on that is that it was their way to not raise their own children directly to be more detached from life, to better/easier achieve spiritual enlightenment.

For once I don't agree with Lola in everything 👀 Jinora definitely deserved to be taken care more seriously; at the end she does master most of what Tenzin can do, and a bit more. Did she say it in a bit of a bratty way? Well yeah, but that's daughter-father dynamics for You 😂 and yeah she's 12, but Aang was too, and he already had his tattoos at that age, and there was no shortage of air Masters when he got them. It would be even estrategically Smart to let Jinora get them since that would basically mean she'd have obvious autorithy to teach the others. Also I don't know if this is canon or not, but I'm on the understanding that the Air Nation didn't have what we would call "traditional families". Kids were raised by the community, which isn't cruel, is just a different way of living. As someone said in another comment, too, because of airbending origins (being so ancient and strongly tied to the spirit world, as we watched on Wan's story), there weren't non-benders on Air Nation, so it was not like they picked them and separated them, all of them were born in that way of living. How the coupling matters were handled it's one thing I don't know tho, haha, since at least the Air temple where Aang grew up seemed to be only for men. Did they usually live separated lives? Did they coexisted on certain circumstances, like holidays? Could they live together if they wanted to? Could they have kids with people from other nations (especially given the fact that they were nomads)? Those are the real questions for me, haha

In older times, that's how many monks were created: children from poor families who were given to temples\monasteries to live as monks. It was considered a chance to give them a better life and grow to be spiritually educated adults. There was also a measure of respect to the religion\god behind the monk order, sort of like the parents gave their child to the service of that god. The child would sometimes grow up and find his family again, but these were different times. In ATLA world, I'm assuming it was tradition that airbending children were sent to be raised and educated in the Air Temples, but I'm assuming that they did have parents (though I did wonder if the parents are also necessarily airbenders). Why we never heard about Aang's parents? Dunno. Maybe they just aren't relevant to Aang's story anymore than the parents of child monk who lives hundreds of miles away are relevant to their child's spiritual journey.

Overall, this is one of the mediums in life that advocates the potential and value of non-lethality.....via the Airbending/Nomad culture. Ladies....at least give it a fair shake. Airbenders use violence for necessary self-defense, and in so doing, don't waste energy on unnecessary movements or force. However, they also represent a minority and portion of a spectrum in the world. Literally everyone else kills over the dumbest shit.....they're the only culture that actually had reservations about it...and, much like the Batman and Superman dynamic....they have the power to avoid the outcome. A gaggle of poachers do not deserve the death penalty.....the entire point of the previous series was to show you how people can change and question their own psychology. You don't get anywhere by writing people off as "too fargone" or "beyond redemption".....just because YOU'VE made the decision for YOURSELF that it's easier just to end their lives. Good for you....you get to leave the debate and get home in time for dinner....wonderful empathy. You're too trigger-happy. And it's all well and good and funny enough to just say...fuck the poachers.....a new generation of lethal Airbenders is necessary and on the rise, but....you're pretty consistent about it. Leaving the poachers in those cages is the perfect punishment. Eventually one of them will manage a way out via Earthbending or lockpicking....but in the meantime they experience the fear and rage of being cooped up in there. It's anyone's guess what happens to them and their outlook after this moment....but there's some potential here that one or more of them comes out of this with a distaste for this shit...or at least a healthy fear of the area and Sky Bison...which can do a great deal of good. Maybe it doesn't play out that way either....but the path of non-violence or non-lethality opens the door for so many more options when you just stop eliminating people and living things from your immediate space. It's the reason entire cultures have based their lives around it in our own world.
