Odd that this pops up in my feed, yesterday I read up on the Black 5's; mainly to find out why they were so called, I didn't realise they were extremely capable locomotives well liked by the crews, this one is doing a fantastic job on the long drag, plus it's one of the Armstrong Whitworth batch which with me coming from the north east makes this video even better, thanks for posting, subbed...

Well, the Black 5 was inspired (putting it mildly) by the GWR "Hall" class, which was also a very useful "Swiss army knife" of an engine. 🙂

I have a book here at home, published by 'The Oakwood Press' of Sir William Stanier. Remember reading of his time spent at Swindon & of the influence the GWR had on him. Thanks for watching

Indeed: I heard that the only reason that Crewe was able to "head hunt" Stanier was that Charles Collett was also a young man, and that would have "blocked" Stanier's progression to CME. We can only imagine what Stanier's GWR locos might have been. 🙂

Very nice footage, brings back memories of steam rail tours many many years back. A different angle other than linesiding. I personally appreciate the work 'up front', as I worked on BR as a fireman, in the Manchester area.

Although it didn't rain it was late October, overcast all day with a hint of dampness in the air which may well of affected the rail conditions for the footplate crew to deal with as well as the hefty load. Thanks for watching

Thanks as its 2004 i can believe it is unassisted. Operators then ran steam trains not tourist trains with a steam engine. Its just a lovely sound.

From memory the train was originally booked as a doubleheader but 45407's regular partner in crime BR class 4 No 76079 was unavailable, can't remember why. Thanks for watching

Rather pleased the 76xxx was taken off cause your video just demonstrates what a black 5 is capable of when you consider BR only allowed 8 and 9 coach trains single headed and that was for the jubilees
