Yes, I have a new video at last! And it’s a quadruplet of towers!
The 22nd of January was the date of the LMSCR (Leeds Minster Society of Change Ringers) outing, and the chosen venue was Nottingham. Enjoy some cracking bells in this video!
The first tower of the day was the recently refurbished ring of 10 at All Saints, the home tower of NUSCR. The bells here are a pre-Simpson Taylor back 8 from 1864, augmented by two trebles from the same foundry in 2004. We managed some good ringing on this grand set, despite a stay breakage in the first touch! The bells are easy to ring and are very rewarding. Featured here is some Bristol Surprise Royal and ringing downwards.
Tenor 16-1-3 (827kg) in Eb.
After what felt like an age traversing the tram, we arrived at our second destination, the fine Gilbert Scott church of St John the Baptist, Beeston. They are a mix of Taylor bells from various dates, and just like All Saints, augmented to 10 around the time of the millennium. The back 8 have a lovely hum and they are very easy to ring. Featured in the clip is some Stedman Caters.
Tenor 17-1-14 (883kg) in E.
Following a lengthy lunch break in the ‘spoons, we caught the tram back into town (namely Lace Market) to arrive at the stunning (and bloody huge!) church of St Mary the Virgin. Some interesting access saw us climb a spiral staircase at the side of the transept and walk across the roof. The bells sound excellent, but have the ‘muffled’ effect where the sallies block the sound, causing some interesting and poor acoustics. The back 10 have a lovely Gillett twang and the 15th century 11th, which I am seen ringing, has bags of charm. Some reasonable ringing was managed here. In the video you will hear Grandsire Cinques and also Rounds and Calls on 12.
Tenor 35-2-23 (1814kg) in C.
Our last tower of the day was St Peter’s, right in the heart of the city centre. Rather strangely, the parish centre is built on top of M&S! The bells themselves are a rather mixed bag of Taylors, Pack & Chapman and Mears bells. They go very well (especially the back ones) despite the front 4 being rather flighty. We managed lots of good ringing here, the method in focus on this clip being Bristol Surprise Maximus.
Tenor 22-2-5 (1145kg) in Eb.
It was a very enjoyable trip, and all credit must go to the organisers for such a brilliant day!
