That "offside" goal by Barnes remains one of the great football mysteries of all time, over 34 years on, it truly does. The linesmanship throughout Italia 90 was absolutely the worst I've ever seen at a World Cup (partly because of FIFA's insane insistence that all linesmen should be recruited from the referee allocation, instead of deploying dedicated, regular linesmen who have plenty of experience of running the line), but even in the context of that World Cup, the decision against Barnes just defies analysis. It wasn't just that Barnes wasn't level with or beyond the last defender; HE WASN'T EVEN LEVEL WITH OR BEYOND THE BALL when Lineker played the cross to him. You can tell from the expression on Barnes' face afterwards that he's thinking, "But I CAN'T be offside! The ball was goalside of me when Lineker crossed it!!!" As indeed was the Belgian left back. A decision truly beyond comprehension.

It was a terrible decision...10 years earlier Tony Woodcock scored a goal against Belgium in Euro 80 that was also not given..and he was clearly on..

I got fed up with Aussies telling me how lucky England were to win this game, Belgium having hit the woodwork twice. In the end I put them in their place by commenting that the English had the ball in the net twice while Belgium never did it once. I also mentioned that the first goal had been unfairly disallowed as offside with the replay showing it was no where near it.

I remember it well and it was a great moment. However in retrospect it might have been better if England had gone out in the group stages rather than begin the nightmare of penalty failure that lasted over 20 years.

Some criminal decisions in this world cup...Barnes goal at 2:37 was clearly onside , same as Bertis goal for Italy vs England in the 3rd place playoff again wrongly called offside
