Lo-Fi - QnDS - Discovering additive animations with Unity

Hello and welcome!
In this video we will see a rather mysterious feature: additive animations.
It is an underrated topic for which I have never found a satisfactory source, perhaps this is the first video tutorial on it.
With this feature it is possible to modify existing animations by "adding" a pose to them.
It can be used to make some characters walk unique, to create brand new animations that you would otherwise have had to buy.
By the end of the video you will realize how powerful and fun it can be.
It's just the tip of the iceberg, you can explore the possibilities (an easy experiment could be gun aiming...)

That's why I made it, I struggled to find out that it is so simple to achieve interesting result with little effort. So I shared to my trusty fellows and, hopefully, to anyone who want to join the channel. It's still a basic approach, there is more that can be done with this feature.. but at least it's a common starting point for us. Have fun!

im still a bit confused. Lets say I animate a Melee Attack animation in blender, how do I set that up? as in just to have the upper body affected,(using override messes with other animations so im trying additive) would the reference pose be the first frame of my idle animation then the rest of the animation starts from frame 2? im simply trying to get the upper body and lower body animations separate without rotation errors

Hi, Thanks for the awesome tutorial! The crouch and the proud walk works great but when I try to make the character lean using additive animation, the character just bends from the waist up. Here's what I did: - Duplicated the T-pose like (1:10) in the video. - Changed first frame of duplicated clip to unarmed idle first frame. - For second frame, I changed the "RootQ.z" to -0.2 for left and 0.2 for right. - Added both to a blend tree which sits on an Additive animation layer. It's controlled by a "lean" parameter that ranges from -1 to 1. The result, as I said, just bends the character from waist up. The animation mask although is for the full body. I tried to replicate the result you showed in the thumbnail. Can you help me out with what I'm doing wrong? Or did you perhaps use some other animations and used them together in a blend tree?

Glad you found it useful! Always consider that what you see is what I did, no hidden tricks. I would double check the avatar mask so the "arms" one to be sure the root is not selected (the circle spot under the feet) that would interfere with the leaning. Also the order of the layers can impact the final result. Let me know it helps. Meanwhile.. have fun with unity!

Hi, thanks for your comment! As you may guess at the moment quite busy on the job so I had to slow down the channel. Roll/dash and jumping are common request maybe I'll cover them.. but it's also true that you already can achieve those movements with the knowledge gained in the videos. One way could be to treat them as the attack layer, have you thought of that?

Hello, there are questions about Crouch: repeated all the actions for you, after applying the additive layer, my character's legs move, and yours stick together, what could be the problem?

Hi, I have to say that your request is not clear. If I understood correctly, the additive layer intensity affects your "starting" feet position, is it right? Are you using the animations clip I'm using in the video?

Watch his "Lo-Fi How-To Series: Basic 3rd Person Controller with Unity" Watch them few times and pay attention, you will get the feel for it and will be able to make your own variations. After you done with the series watch his other videos. This channel is pure gold. Cheers!

Sorry, the environment is a continuos WIP, that one reason why I don't share it. Beside that you just need to follow the tutorials in sequence with the result of a complete understanding of each step.
