What is a Family in Revit?
Family: A family is a collection of elements with the same properties, behaviors, and geometry. These elements can range from walls, doors, and structural components to annotation elements like tags and symbols. Families help organize all the components in a Revit model.
Types of Families
System Families: These are predefined families that cannot be created or modified directly by the user. They include fundamental elements like walls, floors, roofs, and ceilings. You can modify system families' properties, but you can't create new system families from scratch.
Loadable Families: These are external files (usually with a .rfa extension) that can be created, modified, and then loaded into the Revit project. They typically consist of standard components, such as doors, windows, furniture, and fixtures, and allow for flexibility and customization based on the project’s requirements.
In-Place Families: These families are created directly within the project file. They are used for unique or custom components that are specific to the project, such as custom furniture or specific structural elements that can't be easily created using loadable families.
PTAC Engineering has created EDGE for Revit with over 3000 loadable precast families. This means with our content you can design your precast project in just a few hours.
