Makes me think about what facing a few hundred horse archers would be like. Firing into massed infantry at range then just riding off again .Two hundred mounted archers could ride up send three arrows each into the enemy ranks and be gone again in a matter of seconds .That six hundred arrows delivered anywhere along your lines and on the enemy's terms. They can pick and chose when and where to attack at will. It gets really scary when you think of what poor Crassus came up against in Parthia. The Battle of Carrhae is the classic example of horse archers and shock cavalry working in tandem, to pick apart an enemy army pretty much at leisure.

I'm thinking in reality he'd be firing farther away from the enemy simply because hes within spear throwing distance.

this was the tactic of fighting the Huns, the Mongols, so they started the attack. But they also fought with the sword, most of the time being successful.

Mike, in your Longbow documentary you mention warbow used on a horse by English archers. My question is how could archer draw +100 pound bow on a horse because horse limits archers ability to use proper technique for drawing?
@loadesofhistory7 жыл бұрын
If this subject interests you I recommend you get my books The Longbow and The Composite Bow. Both discuss the issue from different perspectives. They are inexpensive and available on Amazon. In brief the English used mounted archers - that is archers who rode to battle but mostly dismounted to fight. A few MS images show them shooting their longbows from the saddle. This was not an everyday thing but it could be done and I suggest it was useful on raids, skirmishes and posse situations. The length of the bow makes no difference. The power of the bow depends on the strength of the archer and his technique. I have never been able to shoot very heavy bows and now I have a permanently broken left wrist (too old for it to heal) which limits me to light bows. However before then I was able to shoot a 65lb bow from horseback. Horse archers, as distinct from mounted archers; they shoot from the saddle in battle. Chinese horse archers used composite longbows from horseback during the Qing dynasty and they were required to be able to shoot bows of 160lbs. It is likely that war bows from other horse archer cultures (Huns, Mongols, Turks, Tartars etc) used bows between 80lbs and 120lbs. The correct riding position to shoot such bows is similar to what equestrians call ‘two-point’. The rider is elevated from the saddle, using his legs and knees as shock absorbers and tilting his pelvis back for balance. This position mirrors exactly the optimal position for lifting weights in the gym and the stance taken by warbow archers who are able to draw 200lb bows. It minimizes the risk of compression to the lower spine and also, most importantly, recruits the muscles of the entire body into the draw. People who just sit in the saddle and shoot (and there are some who do it this way these days) are not following the historical model and they have to rely purely on the strength of their arms to draw the bow. So in fact the correct historical riding position for horse-archers is ideally suited to being able to draw heavy bows. Of course you do have to have trained to draw a heavy bow in the first place. I can't, most can't, but there are an increasing number of folk who can and so prove it is possible.

Thank you for your comprehensive answer. It makes sense what you say about stance. I thought horse archers mainly sat in the saddle but since they are elevated they could easily use technique as foot archers. Very cool. Btw, I am an amateur bowyer for some time, but I just got into warbows recently. Yesterday I finished 100# hazel longbow and I love hearing more about this stuff. I enjoyed your documentary about longbow, keep up the good work!

Look into muscle and bone structure of Archers of that period. Or even modern day archers, their muscles have developed to accommodate their draw, making a 100lb draw something they can do with ease, mounted or not.

Great video but interesting editing. At the one minute mark, Mike is riding bareback with a loop around his horses neck, firing an arrow. Then the camera shows the horses feet, and we see Mikes feet in stirrups, in a saddle, his horse now has a bridle, bit and reins. Great horsemanship and archery tho.
@loadesofhistory7 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it. The edit is just a way of linking two sequences - one bareback riding and trust exercises with horse; the other standard horse-archery with saddle and bridle.

Saua appears in the Middle Ages, the parts and probably the hunks were firing on the arches of the horse without standing on it and sprigging the body in stairs and quite difficult. yes Mike Loades is doing very well, as are the parties.

@0rang.utan.bananaman1996 жыл бұрын
shade_grey There are historical depictions of composite bows/horse bows being used with the Mediterranean draw or modified versions of it. The thumb draw isn’t the true “historical technique,” it is simply more documented.
