I went in a lifeboat once. The Dawn Princess (now Pacific Explorer) was using a few as tenders in Ketchikan, Alaska because every other berth in town was taken by other ships (Golden Princess, Oosterdam, and Statendam are the ones I remember being in port that day; we also encountered the Coral Princess, I think, and the Ryndam in Juneau, and the Ryndam followed us to Skagway).
@grahambunton3776 жыл бұрын
It looks a bit crowded, even claustrophobic, and that is with 150 passengers. The Symphony of the Seas has lifeboats that take 370 passengers. But only enough for 6660 people. the other 2220 have to slide down 50 feet into an inflatable lifeboat. It makes my camping holiday look quite appealing.

YES BUT THOSE ARE FOR CREW. Guests don't go into the inflatables.

Do all ships do this with the lifeboat already in the water? I thought part of the test was to certify that the boat was sturdy enough to hold a full load while suspended, and that the davits can hold a fully loaded lifeboat (two concerns the officers had on the Titanic while it was sinking).
@AlistairBaillie6 жыл бұрын
All cruise lines which are members of CLIA will carry this exercise out at least once every 6 months - the purpose is to prove that the boat is capable of holding the number of persons it is certified for (in this case 150)... Lifeboats are only launched with minimum operating crew for safety reasons; the davits and fall wires are subject to 1.1 load testing every 5 years (loading with weights to 110% the maximum weight of a fully loaded boat). A dynamic load test with an empty boat is carried out annually.
@kimberlydymek181 Жыл бұрын
I don't think they would use people as test subjects. There are dummies for that. It's more like a rehearsal and procedure on how to get them in I think.

It's hard to see but are the sides & roof open to the elements?
@AlistairBaillie3 жыл бұрын
It’s classed as a “partially enclosed” lifeboat, which just means it has a solid roof but large “doors” on the sides which are covered by heavy canvas flaps. In the video there open so that air flows though otherwise with 150 people it becomes very hot and very uncomfortable very quickly :)
