I can't imagine how long it took to load that ship, at the speed in which it took to load one bin it must have taken a month!

When loading scrap up here in Canada, the scrap metal gets on the dock already loaded in dump trucks. The truck backs up into the tub, dumps the scrap and leaves, and the tub gets dumped into the ships hold. Lots of dump trucks means the second the tub hits the dock, it gets loaded.

My dad was Director of Port Facilities for Conrail many years ago. One of his facilities was the former Reading Railroad Port Richmond Terminal on the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Conrail secured a contract to load scrap metal ships in much this manner. One of the problems they ran into was dropping scrap from deck height instead of lowering the bucket to the bottom of the hold. This resulted in a lot of friction and heat being generated, to the point that the scrap was heating up to combustion temperatures. They had a heck of a time figuring out how to lower the temperatures and extinguish the fires that erupted. Putting water on board wasn't an option due to the potential of capsize. I don't recall what the fix was. My recollection is that the railroad chose to not renew the contract due to the liability concerns, plus the expense of having to "delicately" place the scrap in the hold.

Yes, that was what I was waiting for. Looks like someone had to go there to release the chains in the tipping end but you can barely walk in that pile of scrap so I wonder how it was done. I don't see any remote release mechanism for the chains.

Seems very inefficient...conveyor or electro magnet would work better...
@runsolo74182 жыл бұрын
Conveyor can only handle small items, plus scrap has sharp edges and corners and can easily destroy a conveyor belt. Electro magnet can only lift a couple of tons, grapple's better.

There should be large front loaders filling the hopper, not a grappling claw. Or a conveyor running material from the ground to the cargo hold on the ship. This is the least efficient way of bulk material loading I ever seen.

That is a long winded way to load a ship - in the past when I loaded scrap it was from crane to hold and I bet we loaded in half the time it took for this ship. 🧐🇬🇧

You should try scrap loading and unloading operations not with rope cranes (Liebher Gotvald or ship crane) but with universal excavator machines that can press the scrap faster and take more load (sennebogen 880..885..895.. mantsinen 200..300 e. crane 200...300) saving time+money👍👍👍👍👍

How come they didn't even think to move the dumpster container closer to the loader and scrap pile to make it more efficient and to speed things up . Must be some kind of union reasoning thing. Stretch the job out ,way, waaaaay....out.

Why don’t they use a front end loaders on the wharf, ?? Why not use a small bulldozer in the ships hatch, instead of the totally inefficient little backhoe,?? Are these people sleeping on the job,?? Is the crane operator, still learning,?? Geez, so much time and $$$ wasted. Unbelievable, !!
@runsolo74182 жыл бұрын
Don't know why they don't use front end loaders on dock, for clean up. Fastest way to fill a tub with scrap is with a dump truck. In and out, one and done. Bulldozer in hold just won't work. Scrap hooks/binds itself together, trying to push it, is like trying to push the entire pile. When your talking 30 metric tons hanging off the cranes hook, speed isn't a good/safe thing.
