It was the underdog story heard around the world. Local fishermen Randal Stormant and Bobby Robinson get the Crappie Masters victory for $10,000 on the St. Johns River in Florida despite not having any electronics in the boat.

This really makes me think about the area I fish in and how the tournament pros do here. I fish the Mobile River Delta and professionals have always had a hard time figuring out the fish here, to the point they call it one of the toughest places to bass fish in the country. But I can take a kayak out and two poles with two lures and no electronics and catch more and bigger fish because i know how they move and act here.

My first boat was a 16 LuCraft bought in 1976. It had a 25 horse Evinrude for a kicker. I caught a ton of fish in that boat in the Ponce Inlet area before I sank it at the jetties about 5 years later. Coast guard towed it in and I sold it to a fellow who fixed it all up and kept it many years.

Im one of these guys. If you have a good understanding of fish behaviors through the seasonal progression you dont need electronics at all. They can be helpful but id rather rely on what i know vs stare at a box all damn day.

On the relatively smallish lakes I know like the back of my hand, I don't need electronics. I've fished them so much, I almost always know where they will be if they are not where I initially thought they might be. I've noticed highly predictable patterns over the years, where fish in a particular area always seem to travel between based on any number of factors. Just bring out the old Jon boat with the 10 horse and go from point A to B and so on and starting working colors or live bait if all else fails. On bigger lakes, or lakes I don't know that well, I would definitely ride the struggle bus without them, because it's like I'm sifting through a desert to find a particular grain of sand.

My kind of people great fishing . I do it sometime 5-6 days a week if I can . I fish alone 98% of the time . I bet I’ve brought home 2,500 to 3,000 crappie in my boat this year alone . Not counting throw backs an culls or just scout fishing after I have a limit . And we are allowed 25 fish per person .

The most consistant walleye fisherman I know uses nothing more than a 12' tin boat with a 6hp kicker, and an old Zebco combo with a Mr Twister. I watch him fish all the time, he always keeps the boat moving but never quite trolling, obviously he doesnt need a fish finder to keep that that Mr Twister right where it counts. Never underestimate how effective extremely simple gear can be in the hands of a knowlegable fisherman.
