It's ironic that people who have belittled him for his appearance are probably the same people who would crucify somebody who negatively commented on an overtly gay or transsexual person's appearance, fat-shamed a woman, etc. Hypocrisy has no limits regardless of what side of the political spectrum people might be on.

It’s also fun to hear his customers from all walks of life express their feelings as well. One thing comic book writers should truly understand, just because DC, Marvel, etc print your story, doesn't mean a comic shop will order it. If comic shops one day as one decided to stop selling all new comics or a title, it would hurt those writer's careers. He has a great opinion of course. Will it cause a huge change? Probably not unfortunately.

No one sees a problem in that most of these fans are far beyond the 13 to 24 year old demo, much less any under 13? THE main problem with Marvel and DC was their abandonment of the 8 to 12 market and not finding a format they could afford! Hint: Many in that age group aren't going to comic shops!

Totally agree. It’s one thing for a writer to take an element from their life, their own experiences, and then go “okay, how would Bruce Wayne handle a situation like that, and what can I do to craft a story with him in that type of situation?” That’s good writing and can make for a good story. But too often a lot of writers are taking that same life experience, putting what they did, and just inserting the character they are writing at the time in as themselves. And so many times because they are not a person of action in their lives, we get usually a lot of talking and no action, no battles, and no epic scale moments anymore.

The dreaded self insert. The writers inserting their specific life events and traits know that their material would never fly on its own. Now they see if they attach their experience or ideals to longstanding character with an already deep history and foundation it will give their material wings. So sooo tired of it. I am very pessimistic of 2024. Especially with some pretty big names within the comic industry speaking on it. Im guessing their insight is exactly what I fear.

As someone who writes and got help from personal editor, there’s difference between putting real life experience and putting themselves into characters. I don’t necessarily disagree with his overall point. I wish he would cite more specific examples though and explain how they are bad. Writers have always injected themselves into their stories. From Kirby having Cap punch Hitler in the face, to Ditko pushing his objectivism into Spider-Man, to O’Neil and Adams tackling racism in GL/GA, to Miller sounding alarms of fascism in DKR. This isn’t anything new.

This is why I hated when shows like Big Bang Theory and the supposed "geek" culture got famous (no such thing as geek culture). It turned everyone into a comic book and pop culture "expert" while the OG's get ostracized from their own culture and the one thing that gave them normalcy in life. Now they get criticized for adding their expertise on things they are actually experts on. Remember when students tried to tell Bradbury what Fahrenheit 451 was about? That's what we have now, people thinking they know more about the author and making fun of him because they don't agree. I'm a big fan of science fiction but I respect my elders enough to not write to the editor of Asimov's and criticize her for not picking other stories. I am just the reader. I trust. I bet the idiots who made fun of this guys looks thought the Acolyte was great.

This is an editorial issue, not a creative one. These days the wrong writers are put or allowed to write the wrong titles. The shop owner is right though about too many writers not having enough reverence for the source material's history. Comics have always had something to say about society but it was the heroes that remain static and reliable among societal change. That WAS the appeal of Batman or Spiderman, that they remained reliable and more of a lens, not THE CHANGE. 🤷🏽‍♂️

The main character in a long-running series should not be changed overnight to ensure the continuity and quality of the series. Of course, the main character undergoes personal and possible social changes over time, but this should not be at the expense of the essence of the character and the entire series. Limited series can be used for experimental or writer's personal storylines magnified by the character....!

It's very cool of you to use your platform to shout out and defend this man who's speaking his truth, which I almost 💯 percent agree with. I've been collecting for over 45 years, and I've always hated/disliked changing classic characters for your own means. I grew up liking Jean Grey, Captain Marvel, Barry Allen, and even Supergirl being dead. Their deaths meant something to those stories, not to say I enjoyed their death, hated it, actually. I liked when heroes stayed dead. Some revives I totally understand, Jean and Barry being great examples. But new creators killing off heroes for shock value have no understanding of comics I grew up reading. I do agree that they should make their own character/characters and do what they please with them. Classic characters shouldn't be touched, make they villains better, make better schemes that the hero's have to think their way out of. I remember when villains limped off to fight again or just planned their revenge. I'm not saying all stories should be cookie-cutter stories. But your writers should be brilliant. They have a history of stories (action comics 1 thru present) to pull from. No need to kill off anyone unnecessarily to sell books, no need to revive anyone to sell books. I consider myself woke, but there is no need to gender swap any classic characters or change their sexual orientation just to sell books. You want to create a character based on sexual orientation, gender, or person of color , by all means, do so. But leave classic characters alone, leave classic stories alone. Be brilliant, create better stories and characters because you know your history, not because you want to be in the stories.

I agree with the comic shop owner. These big comic publishers should give what the readers want instead of trying force certain agendas down the throats of readers. No wonder why Manga is exploding in popularity.Manga creators listen to what the readers want to read.

Sure the guy looks a little bit dorky and sounds like Peter Griffin but his argument is right nobody can argue with that a lot of times I think a lot of the writers don't even understand the characters

I saw a TikTok comic shop employee go after Glenn for "scaring away potential customers". I'd rather someone be honest than gush about how great everything is. That being said I'm a fan of Glenn's channel even though I disagree with many of his opinions.

Seems to me as well that some collectors focus more on the front cover than the story inside.
