Local paradise in the Maldives - Dhigurah

Welcome to Dhigurah, a local island in the Maldives. If you are looking for The Maldives on a budget, this is your place to be. It has the same stunning surroundings as the resort islands but it is a lot cheaper.
The island is situated in the South Ari Atoll. Frome Malé it takes about 1,5/2 hours by boat to get to the island. This island is completely surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches. Dhigurah is one of the longest islands in the Maldives. The island has the most stunning sandbank when you get to the south part. Dhigurah is one of the best places to dive in the Maldives. Beautiful coral reefs are situated around this hidden gem. This makes it also perfect for snorkeling. Snorkeling in Dhigurah is easy as a lot of reefs are accessible from the beaches. I was there in June last year. For us, the weather was amazing. However it can be a little more rainy in june and july. The best season will be january until march. You will have the least chance on rain. June and July can still be amazing when it comes to the weather as I have experienced :). A positive is that June and July is a good time to see the manta rays and the whale sharks! I would definately choose a whale shark and manta ray excursion. And be sure to book a snorkeling excursion. There are many local tours which you can choose from. We mostly did the tours via our own hotel

Hi, how about the transfer from Male to island? Speedboat? Any reccomendation for the hotel on bikini beach? Thanks!

Hi! You can fly and you can take the speedboat. Most hotels have a speedboat operation to the island. It depends on the current but it will take between 1,5/2 hours to get there. A seaplane will bring you to a nearby island and afterwards you would have to take a small boatride to Dhigurah. This will take an hour. We took the boat. Mainly because it was way cheaper (about 65 retour) There are multiple hotels on the island. We stayed in atollkey beach villas. Quite a good hotel with nice spacious rooms. It was a bit further from bikini beach but everything is really easy to get to by foot as the island is quite small. I think there is no wrong choice when it comes to hotels!

I have a question how does it look with the bathing on the island there are really so many not bathing zones? And how about cleanliness and garbage burning ?

Hi there! There are two designated beaches where you can wear bathing suits. You just have to type in ‘bikini beach’ in google or ask a local to guide you. You are also allowed to wear bathing suits on the sandbank in the north so there in total 3 designated places where you can wear them. An exception is the friday. You are only allowed to wear a swim suit on the bikini beach on the west in the middle of the island and not on the sandbank. This is because of the islamic religion. I think i’ve only seen one example of garbage burning somewhere in the middle of the island. All the residential areas are currently in the south. The north of the island as you saw on the drone footage is almost completely green and full of plants. Garbage burning will only occur in the residential areas but it almost wasn’t present at all. The island itself is really clean and tidy. No plastic on the beaches and clean nature! I hope this will help!
