Chris Zaldain finishes up his tournament in South Carolina. He didn't expect to start the day off with a local on the spot he's been fishing all week. This is Part 3 of 3 on the 5th Stop of the Bassmaster Elite Series tour on Lake Murray in South Carolina.

I should have left the area when he started chirping, but he went on for 30 minutes in the beginning and I never responded. The main DJI camera is faced the other way and I had yet to turn my chesty on until about the time I decided to react. That part is not shown in the edit. I never asked the guy to not fish the spot. Regardless, this is what happens a lot especially during herring spawn tournaments. They don’t spawn everywhere and they don’t go off all day. Our job takes place on a public body of water. I get some people won’t want to share the water with the tournament guys, but I have a job to do. I have to fish what I have or take the chance of not making money that week. I was upset. This is the reality of what happens. I can’t say I won’t get upset again. When your livelihood depends on those 8 hours on a lake you only had 3 days to figure out, your emotions run high. I didn’t have a bunch of dots to run. I maybe had 4 places I’d found all week I thought I might be able to catch fish.

I am an avid fisherman especially on Lake Lanier where there are so many tournaments and weekend guys. If a guy is on a spot I found I will leave it alone. I highly disagree with the way you handled the situation and that angler is going to have a bad idea how pro anglers should handle that situation. At the very least you should have explained your situation at the beginning of pulling up to the point and ask if you can have it. If he says no then you have stay back from where he is wanting to fish. We are not entitled to spots that non tournament guys want to fish. Just some food for thought

My perspective: first to the spot gets to fish it. I don't care if there is a tournament going on or not. Most of us don't get to fish for a living and only get a day or a few days here or there. By no means is our time fishing less important than someone who gets to fish almost everyday. Our time also isn't more important than the tournament fisherman. I couldn't tell who was there first and don't care enough to go back and look, but everyone should be respectful whether they are a pro or not. If those guys came in and tried to push Chris off of his spot they are in the wrong and vice versa.

@@Zaldaingerous here’s the crazy part in my mind…I don’t remember if you were on live that day or not but the leaders were on live and the map clearly showed where anglers were fishing. If he’s watching live did he see you there? If so he could have been trying to get a reaction from you specifically because he could have easily gone to where Walters or Livesay were bc they were the main two on that early schooling pattern. Why else would he have live open and watching on his phone? He knew exactly where many in the tournament were fishing. Either way, you had a great tournament and caught them way better than most after the early morning flurry, I was impressed you found a few bedding and was able to catch them that deep. Lastly, I don’t think guys care if you’re fishing close because Livesay was 50 yds from Hudnall and they split the water, this local seemed to be stirring shit especially when he broke out the phone like a Karen. For those bitching, Chris never told the guy to leave. He said it’s public water, was he mad? Of course and I probably would have handled it differently because that guy was looking for a reaction and I would have given him one 😂. I fish Wheeler all the time and I could have been the dick out there fishing the flats or in the pond John Cox was fishing (it’s across the lake from my camp) but I stayed home and watched. Btw, Paulink drove up on Cox and left instantly. That one only had enough fish for one angler and they both knew it….. again, etiquette.

Chris, I had the EXACT same thing happen on High Rock lake in the early 2000’s with the late Aaron Martens bless his heart. I was fishing in a southeast regional finals law enforcement tourney that “they” ignorantly planned on the exact weekend as an Elite tournament. Long story short, myself and my teammate exchanged some childish heat of the competition words with Aaron that we ALL regretted later. We actually quashed the whole unfortunate incident by email thanks to his awesome wife Lesley. We communicated a bit afterward via email and we laughed & shook hands at the West Point lake event he fished in my hometown. Point is he was fishing for a living and We should have recognized that and moved on to fish our recreation tournament. Still count Miss Lesley as my friend to this day. Chris you’re a good dude that has earned all you’ve gotten, life comes with mistakes and we all make ‘em so No Sweat on this incident bro!

@@Zaldaingerous From what I saw in the highly edited interaction, you drove up on him and then yelled at him. Then you purposely antagonized him and even insulted his intelligence in the video twice. My understanding of fishing etiquette is that if somebody is already on a spot, then it's their spot. The fact that BassLive publishes spots is part of the game that the tournament anglers have to endure. It's public water and he has just as much right to be there as you do. If you arrived and asked politely to share his fish, then it would have been an entirely different story and interaction. If you arrived, were too far away to even ask and he yelled at you, then you could go over and politely ask. You are supposed to be a professional ambassador for the sport. Interactions on the water happen. Teach people how to handle them with civility.

I'm gonna just float this out there for grins. I read through a ton of comments and this might have been brought up already but I didn't see it. If it has, then saying it a second time won't hurt. Had ANYONE ever done something they wished they hadn't done? Ever? Did you get crucified for it? Did you learn anything from it? Did you wish you'd have handled it differently? Will you handle it differently if it happens again? I don't agree with what Chris did, I don't agree with what the other angler did. It was a judgement call on both parts and bad judgement was used. The only caveat I will add to that is I believe that if someone is there first, I'm going to go somewhere else. I'm not going to let someone else ruin my day. Ultimately, it's a decision that BASS is going to have to make relative to fine/no fine, and Chris is going to have to decide how to handle it if the situation ever presents itself again (and it likely will). I totally get the emotion of having 3/4 days to affect your income, but there are variables you can't control and someone sitting on "your" spot is one of them. Now, I get that the "one day off" guy was chirping, but he accomplished what he was trying to accomplish: he took you off your game. Life is about how you control your reactions to other people being d*ckheads. Don't become one yourself in the process. Don't put a target on your own back because of your reactions.

Have heard about this all over TFF. Sorry man the guy was there first you should have either gone over and asked him if he mind sharing the spot, politely, OR just moved to your next spot and come back later. I have seen this on Fork quite a bit where the “guides” think they own the spot especially when the deep bite is on and have no problem coming in on “the common guy”. However, do it to them and it’s a problem. Some of us found those spots when they were still babies. lol I avoid fork when pros are in town but you can’t expect us to give way just cause you are “in a tournament”. Which is what the video shows. I will give you another perspective though for this situation. If all you guys know he is following on live and showing up at everyone’s hot spots then handle it there and not on social media. But this appears to be a bad approach on your part based on the video. Just be polite and come up and ask. Most of us will be like sure if we didn’t know about a tournament or accidentally fished one of our spots on our day off and it was a money spot for the T without knowing. Not all may give you the spot or share nor should they just because you’re a pro trying to make a living using PUBLIC resources. BUT if he is following live then going to the spot that’s just wrong. Some of us hate when they show spots on home lakes when pros are in town. Those spots get hammered and never produce the same after every local, guide and out of towner hits it for months or years

Trying to enjoy the weekend he didt appear to be close enough to be interfering in what you were doing thats just what is see on the camera tho. On your side i completely understand that this is your job and how you provide for your family . As someone who wants to get into professional bass fishing i wouldn't want someone fishing a spot that could help me provide for my family. With that being said if he was already at that point and you pulled up i would have asked politely if i could squeeze by. The guy trolling next to you was uncalled for

I agree with most everything you said except for the end. Chris clearly says that he will get closer to the guy and then gets on his trolling motor. And if a guy was threatening me the way Chris was then idc what happens after that. Chris is the instigator in the whole situation and deserves anything that he got. He was super unprofessional and not a good representative of the tournament angling world. That attitude is why a lot of fosherman hate tournament guys.

I still belive Chris is a great ambassador for the sport of bass fishing everyone has off days but this was kinda out if hand. At the end of the day it is just fishing everyone should do it for the fun and peace it gives you. I understand that it is Chris's job and that he found that spot in practice however you can't tell someone they can't fish a certain spot because your in a tournament. You have thousands of dollars worth of electronics and a boat that can go 70 mph and also Chris is a top angler in my opinion and belive he is going to do very well next year at the classic ,no doubt about it. But to flip out on someone who clearly is a fan . As he said, "your watching basslive". I don't know both parties had the rights and the wrongs. Sometimes people have disagreements and frustrations it's just apart of life. I'm not gonna knock Chris for it . I met him out in Arizona for the WON bass US open on lake mohave . The Champion guys knew about the tourney and what they were doing. Chris could have approached them a little nicer , if that how he opened up. I hope we aren’t seeing the complete story. The this is where I work, doesn’t fly as it’s a public place. I may have told Chris to pound sand too if he opened with that. Now the Champion guys could have been polite about it and shared the water or left. Maybe they don’t like Chris. Who knows? They have as much right to fish that water as Chris does. It’s public water. It’s sucks for Chris as there is a lot of money invested for him but unfortunately part of the game. I fished the busiest inland waterway in the country. No matter how big of a lake, if I know the professionals have a tournament there I would NEVER go fishing there the same day. That’s respect for the sport and the anglers dedicating their lives to it. That’s how to avoid this, don’t be out there, go somewhere else. It’s 3-5 days out of the year, fish a new place for a change. On the flip side, respect is mutual, and the Pro should kindly ask to fish or share the spot. If the other party wants to be greedy then pull the trolling motor and move on. Sorry you had to deal with this Chris and don’t let any negativity from the comments stop you from doing what you’re doing brother, just stay kind to those who deserve it 👍🏻

What we can't know what was in that guys head, it is known some local anglers purposely try to mess with pro anglers. Being that is a public body of water, setting courtesy aside, both anglers can fish the spot lawfully to my knowledge. Personally I don't get pissed if people roll up on my spot, I just continue on and attempt to out-fish them as I am a recreational angler. I honestly wouldn't go out to fish on the lake during a Tournament that has been scheduled and posted publicly for a long time. I just wouldn't want to deal with the whole scene going on during that time frame personally.
