Forty one percent of dairy farm workers are foreign born, so it's no surprise Mike McMahon -- who pays his workers $9 per hour to milk his cows -- is paying close attention to what the 2016 presidential candidates have to say about immigration.

Corporate CAFO's (consentrated animal feeding operations) still hire vast numbers of mostly white US born workers across the South, Texas, Midwest, grate plains, and parts of the interior west. The conditions are awful but the majority of all US livestock workers are US born. California, the northeast, some parts of Texas (Not Texas as a whole though) are the major exceptions to this, with their heavily migrant livestock workforces. Elsewhere there is still a concentration of immigrant workers in these occupations but they are not predominant.

Yeah, NY is paying twenty bucks an hour and have plenty of help. Prices are not much higher there. Many have gone to robotic. So you're smug smile of prices through the roof is very misguided. Seen the same in a lumber yard. In fact they came in one day and told the workers their wages just dropped another dollar. Because the new illegals would work for less. This is just modified slavery. Compete, compete of course will they come now that America is denying them free health care that you also do not supply.

I did this for 11 years as a herdsman. I got out of it because of my health. I have more benefits cooking than I ever did farming. Farming is financial abuse. Their expansions have bankruptcy written in them and at the end of the day, their income is 40-60 cows. I don't miss checks being late. I don't miss having bills overdue. I made more money working in a kitchen than I did in a barn. I cook 45 to 55 hours a week. I farmed 60-80 hours a week.

This is an easy solution to get businesses / farmers all the workers they need: 1) Businesses in need of migrant labor apply with e-verify. 2) Businesses prove that U.S. citizens were given an opportunity to apply for vacancies. 3) Businesses submit to Homeland Security (DHS) a list indicating type, number, and salary of available jobs. 4) DHS encourage migrants to apply for guest worker visas. Number of visas issued will equal the number of jobs available. DHS also matches the workers with the jobs according to skills. 5) Have guest workers check in with DHS every 6 months to ensure they are working. If they leave a job, they need to inform DHS so they can get reassigned. They will forfeit their visa and be subject to deportation if after 30 days they fail to inform DHS and therefore not legally working. 6) DHS regularly checks these businesses with e-verify and site visits to ensure that all their workers have proper and up-to-date documentation. Fine these companies if not in compliance. 7) DHS helps worker without a valid guest worker visa to obtain one (the business obviously needed them or they wouldn’t have been hired). No company or farmer would be in need of workers when DHS channels eligible workers to them. They wouldn’t hire undocumented migrants if they know they would get fined. No worker would try to enter illegally if the application process for a visa was easy and was assured of a job once she / he obtained a visa. Border patrol can now focus on the criminals who might want to enter illegally. No wall will stop them. They have tunnels, trucks, planes, and submarines. Using this solution, hard-working migrant workers and their families win. The farmers and other businesses win. Border patrol win (less work to do). DHS wins. They will be able to keep track of the vast majority of migrant workers. Last but not least, American taxpayers win because there’s no need to build an expensive and useless wall.

I grew up in a rural area in northern Wisconsin back in the '50s and '60s when there were more Holsteins than humans in the state. "America's Dairyland". Most of the kids I went to school with were farm kids and virtually every farm had a herd of dairy cows. You know who did the chores and helped milk the herd morning and night? It wasn't illegal aliens - it was those farm kids. Mom, dad and the kids. The big factory dairy farms killed that system off and illegal aliens using someone else's SS# have taken their place.

The social security pays too well. And we have the same yaping people here in Europe too. Tax payers pay the lazy farmers too much in subsidy. Little do they know that only certain types of farms get tax money. Milk -yes. Beef -yes cereal -yes. Pig poultry vegetable - no. And many more besides. The truth is Western Europeans won’t work as its hard dirty work. The only reason your not a farmer is because there are farmers. If not you’d be out growing your own food. Why if farmers are so well wet nursed as you claim is farmers in the western world in permanent decline. Less and less are prepared to work on farms but sure if it’s so profitable why don’t you start farming. Let me guess lazy shits don’t do manual.

T.R. Plume I also believe in free market however can you really have free market in food production? Supply and demand you’ll quote. However what happens when there’s a severe weather event that destroy crops. Or a new animal disease,or a war that severely curtails production and prices escalate to the point where the poor in society can’t afford to buy it. Do they just starve. Because that’s truly market forces. I’m a capatlist however I do believe that there are people in society that do need help. If true market forces was to be let loose on food production again the true poor would starve. It’s something that’s very hard to answer. If we lived in a true market economy it would just be a case of let the poor die not something I’d want. It’s worth remembering we here in Europe starved when ww2 was taking place. I know it’s 70 years ago but it happened. 30 years ago China starved. Wars happen disease happens. The truth is these illegals that you talk about are there to earn money to help their family’s and if you remark they aren’t sitting behind a computer or stuck in an office with air conditioning. They’re out in the shit doing jobs that Americans won’t do. It’s exactly the same here in Europe our own people won’t do shitty jobs.

Also a lot of the biggest farms are mechanized. the cow walks in and the machine milks it automatically. the cow gets grain and has a tag so it can only walk in 3 times a day. you notice none of these stories are about the construction industry, or warehouse jobs etc.

Even if what the farmers are saying is true does it really mean we have to have a open boarder made up of those who are not coming to work in agriculture too? Why also do we need a hundred thousand a month and a million a year? Are they not staying in these jobs? Every agricultural loop hole is going to be exploited. If they want to change the law come up with a number and post the jobs for a livable wage for the area first.

To everyone who blames the farmer because he doesn’t pay enough. I grew up on a dairy and have been logging for the last thirty years. Working hard was cherished and admired when I grew up. It’s not anymore and hasn’t been. These guys want to work and we want them too legally. You have to submit their documents in order to hire them it’s not up to the farmer. All we want is immigration fixed so we can get workers LEGALLY. Using the immigration debate to score political points hurts you with price and availability of the product and hurts the producers livelihood. We want legal workers that come on visas or come across legally. Period. Make them follow immigration rules as we follows our country’s rules. That’s why we want the wall, as a metaphor, to make it legal. If we value the trades we’ll have trade workers.

I worked with pigs and cows and worked a tomato field growing up. I understand fully how these jobs are. The smell is difficult to adjust to at first but over the first month you eventually go nose blind to it and heat and cold can be hard on the body but eventually you adapt and really toughen up with it. It's honest good work but sadly most people and kids are raised to believe these jobs are absolutely beneath them that it will ruin their life or is a dead end but its not.

I can't understand why the narrator is making it sound like farm smells are terrible. If I could go back,I'd do it again just for the smells. I don't like the smell of pigs however. I'm american born and raised, it was good work for a teen who was too young to get a "regular"type job.During school,I worked weekends, after school, and throughout the summers. The pay is not at the highest level, but I loved it.

This is something that can be talked about and can be made into a compromise. Firstly, the report is just talking about one family which do not represent the the whole milking farm community. Second of all, if the price do go up, no one will buy. So farmers will have no choice but to bring the prices down as that's because its dictated by the market. Thirdly, if there are smaller local milk farmer businesses all over, prices can still go down.

There are so mamy factors to consider into answering your question. But just to answer your question cause I think its a question where you either have a follow up or a question to lambast my opinion, so be it. Ill go 8-10 dollars an hour with profit sharing. That is if the owner of the milk farm or the board are actually generous enough to do such thing.

another load of lies. pay adequate wages and you will get more than enough workers to do these jobs. i live in a very very very modest house, and at double those wages i could not buy or rent my house. i drive a 21 year old car. when we add in the amount we subsidize the unemployed and underemployed, we are paying a lot more for food now. we just don't know it. as far as the job being gross, i run a health care facility, and believe me, nurses, nursing assistants, etc do far "grosser" jobs than this. dentists deal with far "grosser" issues.
