There is a story of a samurai, who, when his sword breaks, searches for its original maker to get another. It had been a very good sword. On finding the son of the sword maker, he he learns that the sword maker is dead… but his son is making cooking knives of equal quality. The swordsman asks if the son would take up the commission, and the son declines. He does not make weapons, only tools. He is separating himself from the industry of murder. The swordsman thanks the son for his time, and departs. When asked why he didn’t force the son to make the sword he needed, he responded thus: “I could force him, true. But his heart would not be in its making, and it would be sure to fail me at some critical point.” These localizers are idiots.

Forget taking back the licenses only, time to update and change future license contracts for anime. You mess with it: - License revoked - fine of double the licensing fee - Immediate removal from streaming platform, additional fine for non action - Recall of all physical copies - They can sell the license again and the new owner is immune from all possible legal action by previous owner. As a fan of Lovely Complex for several years, I would LOVE to see why that localizer saw Risa as a “psychopathic useless freak.” I’m all ears. Like is it she’s self conscious about how tall she is compared to her other female peers, Y’know, half of the reason why it’s called Lovely Complex? Is it because she copes with her lack of a love life with dating sims? Is it because she dares toe the line between wanting to pursue the guy she genuinely feels a connection with after getting rejected, while balancing their close friendship with each other that he feels comfortable with in a less than perfect way? Is it because she makes hilariously unflattering faces for comedic affect in a COMEDY show? Is it because her initial way of coping with trying to move on is getting a cringy crush on a hot teacher? Like seriously, people truly putting female characters on pedestals if these actions make them out to be “psychopathic useless freaks. Also, fyi, the comment about Nobu having a gaydar and hating on Seiko for being trans in the original source material is 100% false. Ironically enough their “fixed” scenario was literally what she was doing in both the anime and the manga. Girl was literally just being salty about a new super cute and fashionable girl hanging around, but I guess they made the gaydar stuff up to pretend to feel justified for whatever reason.

This stupid translator actually made me rewatch the series (in japanese from a fansub), because its been over a decade since I watched it, I remember liking it a lot back then and I'm baffled at the statement that Risa is a psychopath, anyway I got to the episode where Seiko is outed, and the main cast is very accepting and supportive towards her, yeah they got a good laugh at Otani falling for the trap at first, that's a pretty normal reaction for teenagers but later on nobody minds, Risa go as far as defending Seiko when a group of mean girls made some hurtful comments to her, and Otani says to Seiko that he doesn't dislike her or think she's repulsive but it would be pretty complicated to be her boyfriend, imo a pretty kind response for a straight guy. Lke, are we watching the same anime? what are you on about?, These fucking activist want nothing less than praise and for you to bow and kiss the dirt they walk on, to me the only psychopath here is you if you can't understand the empathy between these characters.

California, particularly Hollywood, has been screwing over Japan in some way or another since at least the 90s, if not longer. It's more or less an arms race between Japanese companies to learn how to deal with the crap and Hollywood coming up with new ways to mess with them. This ranges from using ambiguous wording in contracts (The Macross *franchise* has been held hostage for decades because the company that got distribution rights outside Japan successfully argued that that their contract to distribute the first series applied to all things Macross because it wasn't stated if "series" was singular or plural) to cutting over half an hour out of some anime movies for disagreeing with the content. This would all stop if Japanese companies made ironclad contracts and watched the western companies they work with like hawks...

They are, while a couple of manga were made with AI translation before, Japanese anime publishers are starting to get on board for AI dubs now. And why would they actually license their anime to Crunchyroll if they can easily make their dubs themselves? You don't have to be based in America or Europe with a streaming service and split the profit when you can make everything yourself, stream it and get 100% of the profits without gaijins changing your IPs as they like. I am pretty sure we will soon get Japanese run streaming services, AI dubbing already works just fine and that will end Crunchyroll. They have poked the bear and the consequences are on the way. Sure, it will probably take them 2 years or so to have everything up and running but there isn't any downside to cut out the localizers and do the translations in house now. It is cheaper to use the Japanese voice actors voice with an AI and have someone lo check it then to hire a translator, a localizer and a new voice actors and they get full control of the dub as a bonus. AI will also keep evolving and get better, lowering any cost and time for translating anime and foreign live action shows and movies. Another advantage is that many more anime will get translated to other languages then English as well. We are also likely close to getting real time subs to anything we watch as well. They are less likely to use AI to write stories or make art, even though I can see them using it for animation to cut cost.

Just to give you an idea of how laughable JelloApocalypse is at this point. A while ago, he made a dumb video called 'Vote' which was basically him virtue signaling to get people to vote for his side of the political aisle. So for context, back around 2018 the midterm elections were happening in the United States and Jello felt the need to make a now really cringeworthy video where he told people to vote for his side to stop the "evil fascist orange man" at the time. At first, most of his audience applauded it but other people outside of Jello's bubble would tear that video apart and point out why it's disingenuous in the first place; regardless of how you feel about Trump, that video was just Jello displaying how he knows nothing about the average American voter (Jello has since deleted that video off his main channel after the backlash but it has been re-uploaded by third parties on KZbin as to remind the Internet of his cringe). So here we are years later and he's at it again and this time butchering a localization for an anime because he's a virtue signaling activist that feels the need to insert his unwanted personal politics into anything he touches. I thought I was done with JelloApocalypse after the 'Vote' video incident up until I heard about this incident involving an anime localization. So I guess Jello never really did learned his lesson from the last time people laughed at him for being a far left cringelord at this point.

It's interesting to note that, supposedly, Amber Lee Connors wanted to dub Lovely Complex because she was a old fan of it. As in, "she watched it when it was a new show back in 2007 when it DIDN'T have a dub". JellApocalypse is essentially saying that the show his own boss (yeah, "independent contractor" and all, still his boss for this project) remembered was crap. It's also worth noting that originally, Discotek didn't commission a dub for Lovely Complex, which IS consistent with their history regarding anime dubs. Specifically, they'll release a show with a dub if it already has one, as it costs less to commission a new dub than it is to get the license for an existing one. Sound Cadence Studios essentially did this dub pro bono, so in this case, I'm willing to bet that Discotek was just taking what they thought was "good fortune", and didn't look too closely at what they were getting. It's also worth noting that Discotek are the ONLY ones so far to publicly sever ties with ANY of these cultural vandals, so, AT LEAST FOR RIGHT NOW, I'm giving Discotek the benefit of the doubt, especially since their usual work involves license rescuing, which IS an element of media preservation, at least on our end. Right now, the ONLY individuals I'm holding responsible for this are Brendan Blaber (JelloApocalypse) and Melissa Lenti.

One word: money. Anime is as popular as ever, and dubbing is still consummed by some people, either for the ease of watch (no need to read subtitles) or because they prefer the English VAs. This means there's plenty of job for the Dubbing Industry. Now the other main reason for those morons to get into Anime Dubbing: Virtue Signaling. What else but one of the most popular media form to show off how "good" and "tolerant" of a human being you are by spitting on the original characters' personality and dialogues and shoving in YOUR vision of what it should be. Anime is popular and can actually be genuinely diverse and inclusive. They hate it because it’s not their ideal version of how things should go. They want to control exactly how things go, they want their symbols clean and boring, to fit to an ideal that appeals to no one but them and their own. Think about it like this, Poison from Street Fighter has been a Newhalf basically since her inception, she’s one of the most universally accepted trans characters. Before, people would just talk about poison as a character and her dingaling was more of a joke and didn’t impact her character but now the tourists and normies are in the fandom and almost everytime you see one of them mention poison it’s just to brag about her being trans and slap a trans flag on the post. They want to tokenise characters. They want symbols, not characters. Bridget is one of the examples of this, people loved his original character but ever since the retcon, the only thing people ever talk about is Bridget being trans and his personality is now just “generically cute girl”. He’s become a token symbol.

No one points him out but I will again - Caleb Cook, translator for many manga, is an AWFUL translator/localizer. Just in My Hero Academia alone, he has a MULTITUDE of awful changes, including permanent names to moves and names - Full Cowl (he incorrectly calls it Cowling), Heartbeat Fuzz (he replaces Fuzz with Distortion), and LUMILLION. Mirio's hero name is LUmillion. LU. Not LE. Look at the kana used for his name. Listen to how EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER THAT SAYS HIS HERO NAME SAYS IT. It is LUmillion. Fans have used every single ridiculous excuse to defend Caleb Cook but the simple fact is that he has reinforced these BAD TRANSLATIONS for so long that they made it into official merchandise now, which the fanboys use as a way to just auto-legitimize what he's ruined. It's fucking disgusting. There are good translators. Usually fan translators but there are some very good official ones too. Japanese can be a VERY hard language to get the accurate intention of the language of, because of English being Subject-Verb-Object and Japanese being Subject-Object-Verb. (That's also how bad translators make excuses for their shitty jobs.) It can be totally off to just translate the literal word-for-word because the intention is clearly something different (which anyone with basic Japanese knowledge will know), but you also have to respect the choices that the authors make. Just because a translator doesn't like what an author uses, there is ZERO excuse for them to change something because THEY prefer it differently.

In a way, this whole localiser thing really is gamergate 2. Gamergate was about exposing corruption in the games media, and games media didn’t like that, thus through corruption made it look like a harassment campaign, and the exact same thing is happening here!!!

Ironically, the fact the companies themselves don't care how the translations are could mean they'll more likely go with AI doing the localization. If an AI can do it faster and without pay, that'll be a huge benefit to the companies

I love how every time these idiots open their mouth, they're just confirming stuff we deduced about the dubbing industry 20-30 years ago. Like encouraging voice actors to act hammy and badly on purpose. Altering as much as they can get away with. And pushing the lie that "the original Japanese producers okayed all the changes." For many years, when people pointed all this stuff out, the defenders would rush in and claim it was false. But now the dubbing directors and producers are outright saying it. I wonder how the defenders are going to spin it now...oh who am I kidding. They were already pushing the "dubs improve upon the original" claim 30 years ago.

Didn't the Ghost Stories localizers turn the dub into an entirely different show because "the original was so fucking boring that we just made shit up?" This has always been a problem in the anime industry.
@BloodrealmX8 ай бұрын
Idiots praising that dub is what emboldened the localizers to do it with everything.
@Joe-hp6jz8 ай бұрын
It's astonishing. People would rant about wokealizers changing one single word and being disrespectful to the source, and at the same time praise the Ghost Stories dub as the best thing ever, for changing the dialogue into jokes about rape, sodomy, racism, crackheads and retards. This kind of mentality is the very root of the problem. But don't you dare pointing that out. People get really defensive about their double standards.

Another more reason why I like subs better than dubs for most shows

The localizers makes me think of a person getting a job at McDonalds and because they dislike onions they don't put it on the burgers and throw something else instead. If you take a job it is your job to provide the product your employee tells you to provide regardless of you liking it or not. If you find it against your morality to support the product as is you should not support them in any form. However, if you are a talent that took the job for the money you just gotta suck it up and do your job like anyone else. If these people hope to present a show displaying the morals/ story they wish to tell they should make their own show and not change the message of someone else's work.

I’m so early, the only comments are bots Anyway, fun fact: the localiser who did this work also had an alt account that made scat/fart fetish porn No I am not making this up.

It's heart breaking to learn that a KZbinr I grew up ended up being pretty corrupt. Though in hindsight he has said some pretty edgy shit on Streams and seems to be more conceited as the years go on.

I don't understand the logic behind it because it has to hurt their overhead doesn't it because your watering down the product for people who actually want to buy it because the people who care about the show would like it to be as truthful to the original and the manga as possible but they aren't going to buy $100 box set for something that was changed because of a jackass.

I think the part about available people from other projects voicing extras is fine, especially if you consider that the number of voice actors is limited, so it is simply not possible to have every character a completely unique voice. And if you check dubbed anime from smaller countries, you will find that there is a "core" of about 15 or so voice actors working as the primary cast of everything, if they aren't main characters then they do extras, sometimes multiple different characters in different episodes of the same show.

Its abuse of an underpaid and easily exploited system. Most high-end VAs are paid by word and not session for a reason. Imagine doing like... a thespian theater show and your director, after you finish, tells you "okay you belong to me for another two hours, now go next door". Its scummy.

I'm shocked and saddened by Brenden. JelloApocalypse was my favorite indie content creators for a while, ironically brought to my attention by "Welcome to Tumblr" where he and the crew denounced the very wokies he's backing now. I'd pour one out for a fallen bro, but I don't want to waste the drink. I'm too ashamed after this display of his.

They know that they can't make good content, so they want to rewrite and change loved stories and just say it's good because they wrote it. they could make their own games and shows but that takes effort.
