Daniil Shafran has a most fascinating mastery of the cello’s fingerboard--a most beautiful vibrato and the sincerity of HIS UNDERSTANDING about music is equally fascinating--one may not agree with his musical interpretations, he has a unique personality, however NO ONE CAN CONTEST he truly was one of the very few great cellists.

+italo babini Im ganzen das stimmt. Ohne Shafran Cellokunst wäre viel ärmer. In Spielmanieren ist er einzigartig. Meines Erachtens manchmal ein bisschen zu launisch, besser gesagt zu shafranish. Als, finde ich, in diesen Locatelli. Aber das war ehr. Mein Prof. erzähle mir das während eines Sommerkurses im Groznjan-Istrien er schlief im Nebenzimmer zu Shafrans und hörte ihn um 6 Uhr morgens die Passagen der Beethoven A-DUR Sonate ganz leise üben /sicherlich mit einer grosse Sourdine/

PIETRO ANTONIO LOCATELLI {BERGAME 1695-1764 AMSTERDAM} SONATA FOR CELLO - DANIIL SHAFRAN. Interprétation du violoncelle et du piano grandiose magnifique bravo. LOCATELLI fut élève de CORELLI, était un virtuose du violon. Son oeuvre la plus importante est L' ARTE DEL VIOLINO opus 3 {1733} et 12 concertos grossos opus 7. Son premier style est inspiré par CORELLI puis VIVALDI. Sa technique violonistique en fait un des plus importants praticiens de cette instrument au XVIIIe siècles avec TARTINI. Video sublime merci.

Довелось ли Вам слушать Д.Б.Ш в живом концерте? Мне да - в 1975 и 1980. Я был крайне расстроен, что в зале его инструмент совсем не звучал так же, как в записи. виртуозные пассажи тонули в каком-то общем шуме. Две сонаты Бетховена звучали очень странно - фортепиано накрывало все, несмотря на мастерство аккомпаниатора и закрытую крышку. Та же участь была и у Рококо...

Shafran had phenomenal facility, and for some compositions was spot on in his conception, but I wonder if his interpretative values here match what is in this piece. IMHO, his tempo of the first movement is much too fast, in effect turning it into an acrobatic exercise, while his slow movement is very nice, but needs more depth, richness, grandeur, and operatic quality in its expression to match Locatelli's marvelous writing. I miss the narrative inherent in these two movements. In contrast, Shafran's performance of the last movement with its variations works very, very well and is by far is his best of the three movements. My opinion only- for what it's worth or not worth :) (:

@@jonathanstallickhomeopathy I'm an old guy from a day and age when the internet and KZbin were inconceivable, and CDs and DVDs were not yet developed. We relied on long playing and even sometimes 78 records and any live concerts we could afford. In NYC the great artists frequently also played at a high school venue where the tickets were affordable for the working man and his family - the 'children of paradise'. Cellists such as Fournier, Starker, Janigro, Cassado, would perform there after their primary recitals at Carnegie Hall. My favorite recording of the Locatelli is still by Janigro- a great virtuoso cellist, but more important, a great artist and teacher with the noblest of sensibilities. His bel canto interpretation of the slow movement is as brilliant as that of any of the great Italian opera singers- and what is that movement but an incredibly moving opera aria that delves deep into the composer's inner being with its rich, yet carefully crafted melodic and harmonic development (and sometimes harmonic surprises) Someone posted that movement at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4Wwg4KvmJZ0qbc As for the first movement I hear the opening repeated percussive phrase as simulating a snare drum punctuated by a bass drum with its triplet drum roll at the end as if to create a military mis en scene in a rich theatrical narrative, which can visualize in one's mind's eye. And I think the elements of phrasing, sonority, articulation, intonation, and the nuance and expressive character provided by the singer's or string player's vibrato- .....as well as the tempo......must fit the narrative.

sehe dass du Navarra fan bist. Habe in Detmold bei Navarra studiert, vieles fantastisch aber nicht alles. Aber unvergleichbar mit Schafran!!! Kenne und schätze beiden. Der Locatelli von Navarra ist wirklich auch nicht Barock oder Rococo!!! Hoffentlich merkst du das! oder auch nicht!

Als unkritische Navarra Fan taugst du nicht besonders fuer kompetentes Kommentar. Lieber gut zuhoeren mit Ohren ganz auf und Mund (für Dummes Kommentar) ganz zu! Und die Finger lieber fuer Tonleiter auf dem Griffbrett gebrauchen statt unqualifiziertes Unsinn auf dem Computertastatur!

Anderseits zeigst du auf deinen KZbin videos von Branimir Hutterer ("pupil of Andre Navarra") anscheinend ohne jegliches Schamgefühl ein Cellospiel, wovon jeder Navarra Schüler weiss wie Maitre Navarra darauf im Unterricht reagiert hätte! Hat der Branimir auf einen Kurs Navarra mal der Hand geschüttelt und danach als Navarra Schüler ausgegeben?? Und dann über Daniel Schafranlästern...?
