Locating a Leak in the Livewell System

As your boat gets older, it's not unusual for you to have a leak in the livewell system. Finding those leaks can be challenging. Here's a simple way to see where the leak is coming from.

What are those two items that look like oil filters next to the drain plug

Those are metal screens over the inlet pipes for the live wells. They help keep grass and debris out of the pumps.

I located a tiny potential leak but it's hard to believe this could fill my livewell fast enough where I would need to turn on the bilge pump for a couple seconds... this is the second time I filled my bilge area and I just can't see where all this water of mine could be coming in from... so frustrating

Scott, I have been following your videos for a couple years. You have done the best job of showcasing the Phoenix 721's ride & handling characteristics of anyone. I'd like to ask you if your boat has developed any stress cracks over the years. That is my ONLY concern with Phoenix. I've seen a few, and heard of many, with stress cracks around the splashwell/transom area. Obviously, if the hull has been abused....running 60mph across Erie, St. Clair, Toledo Bend, etc. on rough days...it is understandable, but if driven sensibly do they crack anyways. You have proven to be a very cautious, educated operator in your videos, so has yours developed any cracks?

Travis, I had a couple of stress cracks in my 2011 721. They were caused by the way the screws that hold in the rub rail were installed and Phoenix fixed them without any questions. Phoenix figured out what was causing the cracks and changed the installation procedures. I haven't seen a stress crack since on mine.

I wasn’t using the live wells at all and still took on a considerable amount of water. Could they still allow water to come in?

Mine were leaking at the connector that comes through the hull, so even with the live wells plugged, there was water coming in the hull.

anywhere in the bilge area. You're just trying to fill up the inside of the boat with water, until you see it leaking out of the back.
