It’s back! In the previous video you saw us find what was making this 2014 BMW 328i call 911. We solved the initial problem, but if we don’t find where the water is coming from it will continue to have problems. We have to find the source of the leak. We do want to make sure it’s clear that the carpet doesn’t have to be removed in order to run these tests. That was done to dry everything out because it was soaked. We hope this helps. Enjoy!

I called the sunroof drain in my head when they were looking for it lol, if it's clogged then the water can overflow out the side of the pan, and can come down through the B pillar behind the front seats where all that water was pooled up where all the holes in the metal are. Good work!

Great video Sherwood(s). Two kinds of sunroofs in the world: Those that do leak and those that will leak. I use .095" Echo Crossfire trimmer line to clean them out. It's plus shaped in cross section, and I run it all the way through the line, rotate it a few times, and the drains are clean. I don't like compressed air for this as it can cause the hose to blow off the sunroof assembly, then you're pulling the headliner, which is never fun. On my own vehicles, I do this every fall to ensure they don't clog.

Technically they ALL “leak” as they’re designed too. You’re right on not using compressed air, because every drain line I’ve seen has the attachment at the sunroof tray and the hose ends at the end of the pillar and connects to another hose the remaining length. The air can disconnect the drain hose and it’ll leak into the car worse than if it’s clogged. They sell a drain line brush on Amazon that works a lot better and easier than a trimmer line and it’s not expensive.

That’s a great tip using trimmer line. I tried air many years ago and yes the rubber drain tube popped off the sunroof cassette (as we called them in the 90s) so I never did that again. Thanks for the advice , even after 40 years as a master mechanic I am always humbled and happy to learn. Again thank you

I thought the 2 videos in this 911 car series were a really interesting look into the job of a mechanic, and just a really nice look at problem-solving. The process of trying to piece by piece identify and test suspects for what was causing the problem. It was really interesting to see you working through everything that might be the cause until you finally identified it. This was also a good example of why you can't always drop a car off and expect an instant fix. No mechanic can have every conceivable part laying around, especially when the "unusual" parts like that sun roof motor are needed. Gave me a better appreciation of just all that can go into car repairs.

One of my favorite features that was never used on my old '95 Honda Accord. There was a keyhole in the headliner near the rear window. If the sunroof failed, or you had a dead battery with it open, you stuck your key in there and it was a hand crank to close the sunroof. Man, that car had a LOT of "keyholes": - Two doors - Ignition - Maintenance "indicator" on the cluster - Gearshift lock override - Trunk release - Glove box - Rear seats so they couldn't fold down - Sunroof emergency crank - Trunk That was 11 places your key could go into.

They didn't want to replace the car. I sent emails to BMW Germany and finally after 6 months, they gave me a replacement car. I sold it off without registering the car with a few grand loss. Nice job guys. Hey they do make long brushes for automotive sunroof drains. Its probably a safer method of cleaning out the drain hoses versus air nozzle blasts. Which can dislodge the hoses from the pan with just the movement of hose from the air flow. Not to mention it cleans the entire inner diameter surface from dirt left behind which starts the process of a clog.

Not a mechanic of any sort, but about 7 minutes into the first video, I suspected the water was coming in through the sunroof since I've heard that they're expected to leak and are often referred to as a "controlled leak". When you sat in the car after fiddling in the trunk and it only *then* dialed 911 again, I figured the standing water must've been shorting an occupant sensor in the seat. Then you revealed it has a dedicated 911 (SOS) button, and I figured the water was shorting that out on its way to the floor. Given the condition of that wire harness under the seat in the previous video, I'm not sure which one it turned out to be, but it's good you caught that and got it cleaned up! A friend has a 2019 Grand Cherokee that leaks straight into the interior through the sun roof. I'll have to see if I can find the drain holes on that and hopefully get the sunroof working again for the first time since he bought it 2 years ago!

As always a good vid. Clogged sunroof drains cause a lot of water damage,sometimes black mold saturates the sound deadening material, wire harnesses get corroded etc. This is much more common in vehicles left uncovered and outside. Usually an hour of mechanical labor or less of maintenance or a DIY maintenance if you buy one of those long brushes made for the job. Most insurance companies will cover this under a comprehensive claim (less any policy deductible) and just deduct for what caused the problem for example the clogged drain/maintenance fee that was neglected by the owner.
@allaboutroofing2
@allaboutroofing2 16 күн бұрын
The insurer will make up for whatever they paid out on a comprehensive claim by means of rate increases, so unless it's huge loss, I'd strongly suggest not filing an insurance claim for something like this.

I have a 2014 Nissan Versa Note SV, I did the same tests where I you just spray the car until you find water leaking in, and I found the issue myself, along with asking a mechanic, apparently it's a blocked AC/cabin intake drain, the holes underneath the windshield. Thankfully I have a carpet vacuum and was able to pull out the gallons of water, and I have a dehumidifier to promote the drying of the floorboards. I don't trust myself to do it properly without breaking something, so I will still take it to a mechanic, but it probably saved me both time and money not having a mechanic go down a wild goose chase finding the issue, at least having an idea what the issue could possibly be. also what clued me in on it not being a seal issue from the front side passenger door was that all the door kick panels were bone dry, even having a piece of cotton that was completely bone dry.

Had a two way radio company install. Ran wiring down through the front windshield cowl and through the firewall under the carpet. The complaint was a bed smell. Under the carpet was soaked. The root cause was water in the front cowl followed the radio wiring down under the carpet. Found the way you did this one. Stripped the interior out and sat inside while a coworker hosed.

You’re not wrong. There will ALWAYS be drains on the front as well because you can never account for what kind of grade a vehicle will be parked on. Air works good just be careful about using the blow gun full blast because I’ve seen people blow the tube loose under the headliner at a point where it had an inline junction. A long drain brush works great or if you don’t have that some light air pressure to free it up and then running some CLR or maybe some bleach to break up mildew in the lines.

finding water intrusion leaks are so hard. I had a 1994 Camaro when I was in high school that would have a pool of water in the drive side floor board behind the driver seat. I couldn't figure it out I had to take it to 3 body shops to give it fixed. It ended up being the spoiler on the rear hatch back causing the leak. Where the studs for the spoiler that go tough the body there is suppose to be 4 rubber washers/gaskets. they rotted away with age and was causing the leak

So, when I had my F30 335i, I wanted to install a JB4. That car has aftermarket puddle lights and other modifications (like the sunroof motor missing), I wouldn't be surprised if they tried installing something like that. In order for me to install the JB4 it had to plug into the ODBII port and run to the different connectors on the engine. They recommended cutting a hole into the grommet on the driver side firewall which is conveniently located right under the cowl where the water drains. My car had the exact same issue since I created a hole there. I would highly recommend checking the engine side of the firewall, driver side rubber grommets.

You probably already know about the Lexus RX350 2007-2008 era sunroof drain block causing leaks and pooling water under the drivers side or front passenger side carpet. Well, there are a lot of videos about this and one guy drilled a hole thru the firewall to re-route the drain pipe. Totally unnecessary if the drain pipes are not clogged. What happens is that mud and crap build up in the metal panel joins on the bottom of the bodywork skins and all it needs is occasional cleaning.

Yeah, in the first video when they were investigating the telematics unit, they verified that the trunk was completely dry as that was a known issue. I’m not say the front drivers side wasn’t blocked but the sunroof would have used the rear drains as the sunroof cartridge is linked to all 4 drains but I can tell you now that water leak is coming from the heater box drain , when the box is put in at the factory they catches the rubber drain and fold it over, so every time the A/C is turned on the condensation is drained straight into the vehicle cockpit I’ve done quite a few

BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW. And in most cases it's by Engine bay area right under passenger side wiper there is inlet for outside fresh air When drains are clogged water gets thrown in to cabin filter drain down to blower motor and first blower motor then shorting out fuse box and moving forward to damage FRM models and cause a lot of problems. I found and fixed So many of the cars like that. Clogged sunroof drain pipes are only fewer times but mostly it was behind the passenger side dash board or in the right side of the trunk where the battery is sitting and there was moisture in the fuse box. Common problems start with tree's leaf 🌿🍀 and small pieces falling 🍁🍁🍁 on car and blocks the drain pipes.have seen the issue with new cars and old ones with electric problems turned out to be water gets into some electrical stuff and shorting out fuse and the module or draining the battery.

I had a German car that had a sunroof issue, a Volkswagen, after having it for several years the sunroof would open on its own while driving sometimes or tilt, and if it was open it would sometimes close, then the switch to open and close it wasn't in the correct position anymore and if you moved the switch it would try to move the sunroof in the wrong direction, like if it was open all the way and the switch was off, moving the switch would make it try to open even further. I can see why they pulled the motor out of that one.

When leak checking a BMW, I like to submerge the entire car in a lake and look for bubbles. Seriously though, 90% of BMW problems are due to water leaks. They really are just one big water leak. To top it off they put their DME's, Footwell modules, and other modules where the water is and with the connectors pointing up so the water will be sure to make it inside. Great yard art though. The real hope is, and how we make money on Euro trash, is that the owner has a cool classic car or other cherished vehicle to make so cash on so it's a win win.

Deoxit was called Cramolin (came in Red and Blue from Caig Labs) 40 years ago when I started using it. Amazing stuff! The standing water had me guessing the cause correctly. Trash from the OBD port kinda confirmed it. Keep it up!

Your key is issue isnt the key battery itself nissan rogues have the same issue where the key isnt sensing its because the car battery id assume has a low voltage id try hooking jumper cables to it and put the key down in the slot by the dash and try the button then if that doesn't work its definitely a connector sensor going from the key to sensor to battery so if you find that sensor and its damaged you'll have to replace it but use second hand parts cheaper fix and you wont have to go through bmw themselves because its more expensive there is a sensor connector in the back of the trunk somewhere runs underneath the dash everything your looking for with that key runs from the screen ignition down underneath the dash to the trunk and the connector should be similar to what McLaren and Mercedes do if you need help finding it theres a guy who can show you exactly where it is ill link his video down below and hopefully it'll help you find those wires and connectors.

It was probably just overfilling that tray and overflowing down the pillars

soo car was parked down hills which leads to all that water going thur tray in ceiling down driver side pander down the floor unseen and there is way to fix that issues i have seen aftermarket kits that you just put all around window it seal it up but it make for just blocking window from moving anywhere plus sealing up any leak so there not be any more headache with drain issues
