Grab our FREE Location Tech Scout Checklist ►► bit.ly/tech-scout
A Location Tech Scout is when you and necessary members of your crew visit a location for the purpose of identifying and appraising the value of that location not for creative purposes, but rather for the technical needs of the production.
Tech scouts happen after you’ve completed an initial location scout, and have found that the location in question satisfies your narrative needs, but now you need to make sure it’s viable from a production standpoint.
This means sounds, electricity, available light, etc.
We provide you with a FREE Location Tech Scout Checklist.
Our video breaks down:
Which questions to ask.
Who to bring.
What to look for.
AND
How to get the most out of your tech scout.
Our video features key crew member each with their own unique job duties and perspective on the tech scout. Understanding what each department looks for will make you a more complete producer and filmmaker.
When you finish this video, you will understand everything you need to know about location tech scouts and how they are different from your initial location scout.
The end result: You will be able to effectively choose and analyze locations that work well for your physical production.

I'm very concern about the safety. We are in Mexico and sadly it isn't strange that young filmmakers are murder while filming. 😔

Ugh this video is SO GOOD. Love that you guys went through this whole process in such detail. The first thing I asses when location scouting is if the location creatively fits the style we're trying to capture. From there, I get into the logistics. Thanks for posting!

I didn't know about the issue of clearance for the wooden artwork. That seems so crazy, I mean I would understand if it was a focal point like say the bean in Millennium Park but just something in the background is nuts. Thanks for the great info.

As someone with a passive curiosity in filmmaking and the behind the scenes of it all, this is EXCELLENT content!!! So informative and discusses topics I would have never known were relevant, or how to search for.

Same here. I'm surprised at how interesting it is to see how the sausage gets made. I think it would be interesting to me (and useful to actual filmmakers) to have a video showing how each department actually goes about implementing their solutions, including adapting to hiccups along the way. And then of course show the final product for this scene, and feedback on how things could have been done better.

Location scouting is the scout… 1st finding it, 2nd bringing along Director and DP, then a technical scout with department heads… not sure if you have a video for location scouts on how to improve the “finding” a place tips.

If shooting within 5 to 15 miles of an airport (or closer), it doesn't hurt to know the airport's runway layout and forecast wind direction.

As a 25 year veteran Local 399 Location Manager, I find it amazing that this "tech scout" took place without having a Location Manager with the crew. The Location Manager is going to be the one who is ultimately held responsible for everything that takes place at a location. We are never allowed to tell someone "no". We must anticipate every need whether or not it is ever brought up on the day. So, not having a LM on the tech scout is a very, very bad idea.

Cool your jets, slick. This video had a $6000 budget, and with a budget that small, a location manager isn't that important.

This position seems madeup and a waste of money and resources. If you got money to blow, God speed. I think the location scout should pretty much be doing all of these jobs. With technology replacing so much, you should be condensing. Not making up fake positions.
