La Boisselle was fortified like a lot of the front. The Germans had the high ground and burrowed into the chalk to make extensive concrete bunkers. And the British used poorly produced shells and a lot didn't work properly. They also didn't use them well to cut barbed wire, a nightmare for infantary.

Have to say, the whole of WW1 was an utter disaster in military strategy and execution!
