Pavarotti was blessed with a gorgeous voice, which no one can deny. However, it was on Sutherland's coattails that he achieved widespread recognition. He has said in interviews that it was she who taught him how to breathe while singing, by placing his hands on her diaphragm while she sang. The pity, lamented by Richard Bonynge, Sutherland's husband, was that Pav had never learned to read music.

It's a pity that the video is synced a split second before the audio. It's distracting -- I have to close my eyes and listen to the sound track rather than watch the video.

This concert symbolizes the beginning of the end of the great prime for these 2 singers. But both are divine. Also, the 80's was the beginning of the end generally of great opera production, leading soon to the awful modernist stagings we have gotten (mostly) for the last 20 years.

Joan had another amazing 10 years after this. But Pavarotti? His last performance was in 2006! That’s 28 years after this concert. Do your research please.

For the last some 20 years, many people were healed from their deaf to opera, and opera had found its renewed life. It might have been a pity for the opera mafia who were disappointed by not being able to see as many full-force performances by the maestro, the world of opera is indebted to him for being the way we are today.

@@shannonlewis8906 Singing for many more years isn't dispositive of a vocal prime. Her voice was considerably lessened during the 1980's. Listen to her voice every year since the 1950's. Pavarotti was soon to lose much of his iconic sweetness and good taste (in the 1990's) as he descended into show biz and verismo roles. Now be off and do your studying of what 'vocal prime' means.

@Jackson Tremaine From the start of their careers, Sutherland and Pavarotti have been acclaimed as historic paragons. But sadly there isn't a soprano or tenor in 2020 who is on this level.

!mrdunn brucvald: There is a prime to every singer and it generally, per Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, about 7 or 8. You do have accept and admit that the physicality of both voices allowed them to sing well after others retired. Sutherland, I read wanted to retire in ‘86 but honored signed contracts which allowed me to hear her last 3 NORMAs sung in Detroit in the spring of ‘89. I was disappointed or ever felt cheated and only regretted not going to Toronto to hear her in ADRIANA LECOUVREUR and HAMLET or Chicago in ‘79 for LUCIA. If Pavarotti became less than he was, you didn’t have to go. I regret when the Met came on tour to Detroit in ‘79 I didn’t see the TOSCA but for Magda Olivero and Cornel MacNeil!! But Pavarotti did appear in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA and I choose to return to school; stupid me! You denigrate both singers but your attitude indicates that your shelf life has expired and like cheese now remit a rank smell and likely unpleasant to be around. And I don’t even want to know what you taste like!!!

Pity about the film quality. Out of synch. Volume shifts. However nothing can detract from the greatness of LP!!

Sung at times when Pavarotti was a great tenor and not a caricature of himself ...

Fashion choices may have been less than happy, we here fore the voices! Sutherland was never a great beauty. That jaw was great for projecting her marvelous voice though. And Pava looked ridiculous as a young lover, whether in Lucia or the Fille, but his voice transcended that too.
