This was an extremely interesting class. You have to go through 100 + you tube videos to find one that's done as well as this one ! Thank You I really enjoyed watching it. It was informative, interesting, and you covered just about everything I would have like to see. The only or next thing I'd like to see is how other locks work such as an automobile that has both sides that must have pins, I can't imagine how that's done. Thanks again you did a great job and you talked slow enough (which gave my brain time to absorb) and had the demonstration devices to show what you were talking about.

Approximately 90%(average stats normally found online) of any lock can be opened with your typical two picks; the tension wrench and the rake pick. But, as with many other kits, depending on the lock, will depend on the type of pick you need. I have often found the rake(snake) and the hook picks are the only two you will be using in most cases.

Thank you very much. I too was edified by the trick with the half dollar on the tension wrench. You have given me a much better visual understanding for how the pins work and their relationship to the shear line. i have recently become very interested in lock picking. I need a new hobby, I am sick of scale models. I have relatively small, soft skinned, sensitive pinkies. Useless for many things but I hope they will prove useful for this. My wife wants to know if I am planning to launch a criminal career at age 70. I think not but I do expect to have some fun with this and practicing a lot gives an old guy with no kids something to do. when I was a musician, for many years, I normally practiced and worked on new things, eight to ten hours a day, plus playing the nightly sets. That is how you get good at anything, work.

Who said theoretical mathematics is dry? I think math is really cool and quite exciting (2:40). Plus, I found locksmithing equally exciting. It is a fact that after I learned basic locksmithing I resolved my inability to develop high security computer passwords with password types using only a couple of characters. I didn't need complex programming or algorithms.

Very good and helpful video - thanx for that. A question: Is there any available list witch shows, which security pins are bild in in which look. It would be helpful for me as a beginner to learn, how the specific pins feels while locking.
@mikedunham72203 жыл бұрын
I don't know about a list of what pins are in which locks, however Bosnianbill has some excellent videos on how to identify and pick most of the security pins out there. I learned all about spools and how to tell when you got one on your hands from him and now they're nothing special anymore. Also, Lockpickinglawyer is an AMAZING picker and is very knowledgeable about the locks he shows and picks and you can learn just such an incredible amount from watching his channel/videos. Or I did anyway and I'd be willing to bet most others will too. Picking is too fun and getting an open NEVER gets old. You will ALWAYS feel like a badass every single time you feel that core turn, haha!

No, as long as you keep tension on the plug you will be fine. some smiths like to use a rake first to set as many pins as possible, then use a hook or half diamond to set the rest.

Do professional locksmiths really spend time hand-picking a lock these days? I would think they would just drill it out or at just use the electric pick or snap gun when they have to get someone's door open. And a padlock they would just clip off. No?
@coachgumby14219 жыл бұрын
Nick215NY I seen some vids there is scam locksmith companies doing that. They just hired joe blows off the street (These guys don't know how to actually pick locks.) and charge you 200 dollars to power drill your lock.. Any idiot can do that. Plus your lock is destroyed, it may be you have a spare key in the house, once your inside your good to go to keep using that lock. Can't do that if they lock is drilled. You may aswell knock on your nieghbours door or go to a friend with a drill and do it yourself if thats what they are going to do!
@garychap83845 жыл бұрын
@Jiqs CS said _"if they are using a drill then most likely they are not qualified"_ Okay... Here's a story from the UK... Lost my keys and had to call an emergency locksmith out at 4am. He got out his drill and I laughed ... I asked why he didn't use an electric vibro-pick or at least give it a quick rake. I told him I'd let myself in quicker and easier than that, but my tools are in the house. He didn't seem amused having just been dragged out of bed. After he opened the lock and changed it out he came in for a drink. We had a great chat and he was quite interested in my sports picking... and then he said this : The reason that locksmiths use drills is that it is noisy and looks like a hassle. This serves three purposes : 1. The homeowner feels that their locks are secure - if you raked it in a couple of seconds they'd only panic 2. Using a vibe or raking gives 'bad folk' ideas about just how easy and quiet it can be - better that they think it's loud and messy. 3. The time and noise means that people are going to notice - this dissuades people from abusing the locksmith. More than once he's had the supposed homeowner turn out to be a pissed-off girlfriend, ex-wife/husband or just run off when neighbours ask who the hell he is. His company (and it was HIS company) had a policy to only use drills, even though it's more expensive for them. They wear fast and the bits often break. He admitted, when I pressed him, that it does help justify the callout cost to the customer. If you're there for 5 seconds people don't feel like they got value... which can be a problem as a lot of his customers lock themselves out when they've been drinking. 5 mins of drilling and hammering tends to humble them a little. Real nice guy. But yeah... his main reasons for drilling were to avoid bad guys _"getting ideas"_ and preserving the homeowners sense of security. We went on to talk about euro-cylinder snapping - luckily, I live in an area where we don't see too much of that yet... it's more forced doors. Up in parts of Scotland, apparently, snapping of euro-locks is rampant. But, no. You can't just assume they don't know their shit. Most do, but drill anyway.

You started talking about keeping the pick level with the pins, and you moved the pick up and down in perfect horizontal alignment?? I'm sorry, but that is terrible advice. You'll never be able to pick a lock with a deeper pin in the first few positions if you stick to that theory...
