They all had success outside of the group. Solo- Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown all went platinum or more. Also, Bell Biv DeVoe (Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe), who were multi platinum, are largely responsible for all of the R&B singing mixed with rapping we hear on songs today. Michael Bivins discovered Boys II Men as well.

What are you talking about? Back then EVERYONE was coming to see Ralph. New Edition was basically Ralph and Friends. No one was checking for any of them. All of them found success after Ralph and New Edition. Johnny solo career was nothing before New Edition.
