With no intended criticism of the other narrowboat vlogs I follow (nowhere near all of them!) 'Constanze' is about the closest to 'real time' of all of them and I do so agree with loving this time of year. And then you showed bridge 39 which, of all the sights we've seen on our hire boat trips, that bridge is truly iconic. I'm not sure why, but if you want to encapsulatre narrowboating in one image, that weird bridge 39 is it. Obviously, one shot of the Caen Hill flight, or the south portal of Harecastle tunnel or Stoke Bruerne, can tell an awful lot, but this bridge just sets me off. We have to wait until Easter for our 2020 (!) hire boat trip, but watching you two and my other narrowboat friends, will (just about) fill the gap. Nice vlog guys, as usual. PS: The boat we had to do the 4 Counties Ring had an irritating list to one side that made sleeping uncomfortable. We could rarely moor up on the right side to be able to (temporarily) cure the list. I may be wrong, but I'm almost sure we moored just about where you are and we could use our centre line, the roof hand rails (proper tubular rails not 'moulded in') and a couple of our pins, well hammered in, to create a "Rope Tackle" that would tilt the boat level. You can tell we are Scout Leaders!
@FloatingOurBoat4 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger. Or good are usually quite up to date, we prefer it that way and can share the seasons with you all was they change. You are right about the bridge. It is one of the most recognisable does on the canals. As for your boat...... It's a good job you are scout leaders.

What a beautiful mooring! Love the trip, just so amazing. Your house plants are great, and strawberries don't love full sun so they should do well. You can try putting the succulents near a light in the boat, leave it on for a few hours once or twice a week. It's not quite sunlight but it does help. Put the jade plant near a light every few days too, see if it helps. The rest look like lower-light type plants and should do well in the window. Thanks for sharing your travels!!

Norbury junction. That was our first meeting with the canal network. My wife and I and her brother with his wife and son, hired a boat from the place you mentioned, it was terrible. The batteries were knackered, the boat itself smelled of mouldy socks, and the "dual steering" was non operative. But the Shroppie, especially from Norbury to Market Drayton is magic. We thought it was fabulous, we hired the boat for fourteen days and went to Chester, another magic place, so we enjoyed the experience. This was a long time ago, about 35 yrs. Our next boat was from Birmingham, "Brummagem boats", a very nice boat indeed, unfortunately our last canal experience as poor health has stopped us from this sort of vacation. Love to see you two enjoying the life, and couldn't agree more, "It is what it is." Take care and live well.

Wow! What a beautiful spot to be "incarcerated"! And what a lovely canal... Much appears to be carved out of solid rock? Odd that there are single gates one end of some locks and double at the other? Stay safe Friends. 🙏
@FloatingOurBoat4 жыл бұрын
This cutting is exactly that, cut out of the sandstone to avoid extra locks. All cut by hand many years ago.
@spencerwilton58314 жыл бұрын
bryan3550 There are usually a double set of gates at the bottom, lower end of each lock. This is because a single large gate would require a longer lock in order to be able to swing fully open in front / behind a boat. Longer locks require more water to fill and water waste was always a concern on canals. Also, the bottom gates need to be stronger than the top gates, as they hold back as much as double the depth of water. Building a single, very strong gate would potentially make it too heavy to open easily.
