The bridge is quite magical at night too. One dark night years ago, we were about to cross when we realised the bridge was about to open for a three masted sailing ship. There were lots of twinkling lights which made it seem unreal.

Pffft. The Isle of Wight ferry is bigger than that "cruise ship". And Tower Bridge is a bascule bridge, not a drawbridge.

The MV Hamburg is 15,000t and is described above as "massive". Meanwhile the RMS Queen Mary 2 is... 150,000t... ten times the size... got a word that means larger than "massive"? And the Icon of the Seas is... 248,663t... Which makes the "massive" Hamburg... about the size of a lifeboat on the Icon of the Seas... ;-) Please do your homework before using stupid superlatives.

It's not been the tallest building in Europe for a while now. Good video though
@TheKingsGuardsChannel
@TheKingsGuardsChannel Күн бұрын
Appreciate your comment. I wasn’t aware as the tallest building (Varso Tower in Warsaw, Poland) was only completed in 2022. It reaches 310 meters, including its spire, making it the tallest building in Europe, excluding European Russia. It surpasses The Shard in London which stands at 306 meters without its spire. It’s interesting how this relatively new addition to the skyline in Poland now holds the title.

Tallest building in the world is Burj Khalifa in dubai. The Jeddah is about the same height. The shard is the tallest structure in the UK, not the world.

I wanted to correct my last comment which I deleted regarding the true story of the bus that jumped the gap in 1952 as I'd always been led to believe that it was a terrible tragedy and always wondered if anyone had ever survived it. Thankfully, only the conductor had been injured and suffered a broken leg. My apologies for the misinformation and thank's to The King's Guard channel I'd been able to discover the right information as I'd wondered why nobody had elaborated about it on my comment as they'd probably wondered what the hell I was babbling about.

The key issue here is that it’s not a traditional port, and the ship is incredibly large, especially in relation to the size of Tower Bridge it has to pass under, and the fact that the city comes to standstill when Tower Bridge is open. The real challenge lies in the complex maneuvers the ship needs to make, and it’s impressive how it’s guided through these tight spaces by the tugboats. This process requires a great deal of precision, given the scale and constraints involved. Glad you enjoyed watching.

Hardly massive. She is about 15,000 tons. The latest cruise ships of MSC under sonstruction are approaching 250,000 tons and will carry about 10,000 passengers and crew. Still, a great video thanks.
@TheKingsGuardsChannel
@TheKingsGuardsChannel 4 сағат бұрын
If you don’t believe that’s considered big for entering Zone 1 in London, then there’s not much more I can say. A larger ship can’t pass through Tower Bridge, so in other words, massive is the most appropriate term to use.
@BIGV710
@BIGV710 18 сағат бұрын
that is a small cruise ship only for senior citizans we get bigger in southampton being pulled oit stern first and another tug guiding on the bow for safety reasons as it cannot turn round
@christianzotter4224
@christianzotter4224 15 сағат бұрын
Of course, there are much bigger cruise-ships, but for London conditions this one is big! And, a larger one would be also "higher" (more decks) and it would be impossible to pass under the bridge!

MS Hamburg is not German it is a vessel built in 1997 and registered in Nassau, Bahamas. Nothing to do with Germany!
@TheKingsGuardsChannel
@TheKingsGuardsChannel 4 сағат бұрын
Unfortunately you’re completely wrong. The MS Hamburg is owned by the Conti Group and operated by Plantours Kreuzfahrten, a Bremen-based company. The MS Hamburg was built in Wismar, Germany in 1997. The onboard language is German and if you listen to the bystander on Tower Bridge, she speaks / shouting in German to the folks onboard the cruise ship. Glad you enjoyed watching.
