I had an 810K chassis back in the '70's that my uncle gave me. I was in love with it- it has more power and bass than my stereo. I eventually threw it out in the late '90's after lack of interest. Then I found the 810tombstone model WITH the cabinet a couple years ago. I have done nothing to it but you have inspired me to get after it and restore it. I'll try to get you a photo. Thanks for the great information!

@AloneAndOld I fused the AC input with a 3 Amp fast blow fuse for a liitle more safety than no fuse at all. I used an inline fuse instead of drilling a hole for a chassis screw mount fuse holder. If the fuse blows, I'll just take the chassis out and dignose it. It's pretty easy to take this chassis out. On the RCA 262 I fused the B+. the 262 already had a 3AG fast blow chassis screw mount for the input as standard equipment.

Far sightedness and Presbiopia. But not as bad as a lot of folks have. I'm fortunate I don't have worse vision problems. The brighter the light , the better close focus I can achieve. The track lights work pretty good to light up the work directly. I can also beam three lights together, to make it very bright. I inspect 100 percent of the soldering I do with the magnifying glass. I got lucky and this radio worked straight off. My next project the RCA 262 is a lot more complex. Wish me luck!

Great video. I am getting ready and getting the courage to begin repairs on a Zenith 105 IN GREAT SHAPE. I do woodworking so the cabenet is no problem. But the radio chassis is all there and in tact. Except for some of the electronics which by looking at it are bad. Great video. My eyes are not the greatest anymore I have to wear glasses just to read the computer screen. I wish this video was a bit more in focus so I could see what you were working on but it probably was on your view. Great job putting it in perspective though. Gave a thumbs up.**

Thank you, Lockemeister, for making and sharing this video. An idea I have seen to help with powering up radios for the first time is to also have an inline ammeter between the Variac and the radio. As you turn up the voltage, you can watch the ammeter for readings that are too low or too high. For example, if the rating on your radio is 90 watts, and the ammeter shows 2 amps when you are at 40% up the dial on the Variac, that is already 96 watts, and you aren't even halfway powered up yet. That is too high, and you will know there is a problem, and can turn the power off before the voltage gets high enough to cause damage to components. Or if the ammeter shows 0.2 amps and you're at 80% up the scale, you know the radio is not drawing enough current, and something is wrong.

Thanks for watching. i actually made a test box about 2 years after this video that has voltage and inline current. You are absolutely correct. Have a great day and God Bless.

@AloneAndOld I got presbiopia (lens hardening) and farsightedness. I need a plus 4 diopter at least to see about a foot in front of me. More diopter power to see about 4 inches, so I use the magnifying lens to inspect each solder joint. I need more light than I used to need to focus. Far sightedness with presbiopia is a drag.

@HDXFH I used GE clear silicon in a smaller tube. It comes in large tubes, but I got the smaller tube that is easily resealable. I also use the liguid Super Corona Dope. I was experiementing to see what is better. I like using the GE silicone on the twisted wires though. I think it makes for a nice complete twisted wire structure, if that makes any sense. I just applied it with my finger. They twist those wires together to introduce a small amount of capacitance into the circuit.

You're right. RCA did get better with the layout of the wiring as time progressed. I think Philco had better wiring layouts and they used the bakelite block capacitors as wiring points and they have neater wiring. This radio is very sensitive and does sound very well. Even had some original tubes in it. It was repaired a few times and I think because it is such a good performer. The layout could have been better, but then again. The thing still works after 75 yrs so they did some things right

I think start in the middle of the radio. After the second IF. You can pull the diode detector tube out. Then you can see if the noise is in the front half of the radio (that tunes and creates the intermediate frequencies) , or the back half of the radio (the amplifier section). If you pull the diode tube and still have the crackling noise then you will know it's in the amplifier section) At least that can narrow it down somewhat for you. Good luck ! I'm not sure what radio you have.

@JDTV1995 buzzing, like 60 cycle buzzing is usually shot electrolytic caps. You might have a bad tube too, but it's hard to say. I find that from my own experience if I have a radio with 10 tubes I want to restore, I have maybe 3 tubes that have a problem. So that means 70 percent of the tubes were A-OK. Two of my radios had one completely wrong tube in each one. So checking to make sure all the correct tubes are in the radio might be a good thing to try also.

@SmashCOBamberg of course sometimes the volume control wears out at lower volumes since the radio might have been played more at lower volume than higher volume. Perhaps after trying the de-oxit you might need to dissasemble the volume control to see if the wiper area is worn at low volumes. Sometimes you can bend the very delicate wiper slightly to make better contact. I've been lucky and haven't had to do this in a long time!

You are right you should not plug an old radio in that you are not familiar with, unless you use a variac. I have a fonovox 1960 stereo that I plugged in, and the power transformer heated up like a toaster. Fortunately I unplugged it fast and it did not damage the transformer. I replaced two electrolytics but it did not resolve the problem. It has one more cab type with no identfiication on it. I am still trying to find a schematic to determine what the cap is.

@SmashCOBamberg Hi, thanks for the question. I am not familiar with the Nordmende Radio. However the first thing that came to mind is a noisy volume control. This isn't to say that is the probllem, but it could be. I use a product from Caig Laboratories. named De-Oxit, and then the Caig Laboratories, De-Oxit Gold. I find a small opening near the volume controls terminals and spray a small amount in and the work the control back and forth. Sometimes it has to soak in overnight.

Well from my experience radio problems are mostly due to capacitors that have gone bad. If you have a crackling sound then you know the speaker is ok. If you touch the grid cap of each the tubes working back from the audio output tube you should hear a hum in the speaker from your body acting like an antenna and introducing a 60 cycle hum into the circuit. That way you can first know the audio amplifier is working, then the IF section, ect. Usually about 1 in 10 tubes is bad,

Hi Manny, Thanks for watching my video. I think That Antique Radio Forum on the wen is very good. Nostalgiaair is very good too. You might be able to find your particular radio in a discussion blog. I'm not sure what a Sencore Multitester is. I tried lookng it up, but I came up with multimeter instead of multitester so I got confused which isn't very hard. I was buying a set of tubes at vaccumtubes dotnet. Used them in the radio then replaced them one with the old ones to find the bad ones.

@Claudius131 Yes, the bulb tester is a geat idea. Later on, I made a homemade voltage and current test box and that vid is on youtube. Then I can ramp the variac up and see exactly what the current draw is. A dim bulb tester does the same thing though and it's easier to make!

However, if you have no power transformer and the radio has the tube filaments all strung in series, then you can't just pull the diode detector tube. . You will have to disconnect electrically the output of the diode tube to the amplifier tube, or first amplifier tube. Then you will see if the problem is in the amplifier section to the speaker. Good luck !

@burntvalve86 I am not familiar with the Bendix brad of radios. Getting no sound could be just about anything. Well except in your case where you replaced all the tubes. Anything BUT the tubes! I mean a bad 50 cent capacitor could cause a no sound condition. Now I did have a GE radio where the output transformer went bad. In that case it made zero sound. Not even a hum or any static when I turned the volume control.

If you are unsure of the electronics, then it's probably better to find a antique radio repairman. I think the radio you have is a nice radio to restore. You can probably get it fixed for about 200 bucks or so.

@rich6955 I have the workbench power strip plugged into a Ground Fault Breaker. Then the isolation transformer plugs into the power strip. then the Variac plugs into the isolation trans. I think they make new units where the isolation and variac is all built into the same unit. You can get current meters and voltmeters built right in too. A lot of folks use a dim bulb tester to test current. I later made my own current and voltage test box. Momma Mia, more Spagette!

@AloneAndOld That's why I replace all the paper caps and electrolytics. no sense at all to try to keep any of them. the new Mylar Caps are a quantum leap better. The new caps should last for many years. Also the new Metal Oxide Resistors are so much better than the old carbon types.

Perhaps someone has a video on restoring an A/K that could be helpful for you to look at. I know zero about those. I guess it's a TRF radio and not a Superhet. I like listening to the Trucker Show on AM 700 WLW. It comes on at 12;07 AM and goes to 5:00 AM EST. Great show exceot when they have someone selling some product. Best of luck in all you do!

Maybe try getting the tubes tested and or replaced one by one with a new one. I have good spare tubes for all my radios, but I don't have a tester. Most of the time the tubes are good, But maybe transmit tubes wear out faster. You have no audio so that could be in the receiver or the amplifier. I guess replacing the paper caps and the electrolytics would be a good idea due to the age. I don't know if that's the problem though. Leave the mica and ceramic caps alone. Work slow.

@iorixs I wouldn't. Try Mouser electronics or Newark Electronics. I bet you can find the 16 uF electrolytic Cap fairly easily. I've read that in a pi filter the first cap closest to the rectifier is called the reserve cap. to ohigh a cap here will cause too much current through the rectifier. It's best to use the same values. They are obtainable, just takes a little searching. You might like to try just radios . com. He has a great selection. Just that he uses chinese electrolytics.

I have a question about recapping these radios. Can I go higher on the voltage with replacement capacitors? like most of the capacitors are 200 volts and some are 600 volts and one is 400 volts? Can I just replace them all with 630 volt capacitors?
@Lockemeister
@Lockemeister 9 жыл бұрын
Absolutely you can use 630 V and it's a better thing to do. In the old days, caps were larger in size (than the modern ones). The manufacture tailor made the caps, per the circuit's voltage requirement, in order to save space and for ease of assembly. ie: a 200 V cap is smaller than a 600 V cap. Cheaper to make also. Todays caps are much smaller, and cheaper to manufacture, so use the 630 V. www.justradios.com/captips.html

I have one more question? Can coils be checked with a multi meter and what setting do you use on multi meter? Only 1 tube lights up on my tube radio. Do you think that it could have burned out tubes?
@Lockemeister
@Lockemeister 9 жыл бұрын
Brian smith use a low setting on the Ohmmeter function for colis like IF coils, Like 2-20 Ohms, or even less like for detector coils or portions of an oscillator coil. Coils like field coils need like a 2K-10K setting due to many more windings. Usually a schematic will give clues to what to expect for resistance readings. Sometimes, you might have to take the coil out of the circuit. Like by unsoldering one lead or by unpluging the field coil. What single tube lights up? If you have a tube radio with a transformer there are two low voltage windings for the tube filaments. the rectifier tube get 5 Volts and the other tubes get perhaps 6.3 volts. If this is the case, then perhaps the power transformer has a bad winding that supplies the 6.3 volt tubes and the winding is good only for the 5 V rectifier tube. just guessing of course. You could have several bad tubes though, but that seems more unlikely, but it is possible. You could have bad contact between the pins of the tube and the sockets. You probably need to look up the tubes on the tube database, and see what pins are for the filaments and ohm out the pins. Check the unlit tubes filaments with an ohm meter. For example Octal tube filament continuity for a 6F6 are pin 2 and pin 7. Hers the link to the nj7p database. It's great. Good luck and be careful with the thing plugged in. Follow safety rules at all times. Thanks. www.nj7p.info/Tube/SQL/Tube.php

I have a sony CFS-88 ghetto blaster boom box from the 1980s and a stereo telefunkin hi fi from the 1960s. I looking for a repair shop in the greater Montreal area.who can repair these type radios.

maybe you could try googling for something close by to you, or at least in Canada. It's hard to find people to work on component stuff today. sony made great stuff in the 80's. In fact it was said they were number one in consumer recognition. Telefunkin is good stuff too. Good luck. Sounds like you have great stuff.

another thing and i dont know if i can even ask this correctly, but with the radio tubes still lighting up could i unsolder the old audio transformer and use a multimeter to test the leads where the transformer was hooked up to find the power input?

Hi. This is great you want to troubleshoot the radio. Your best bet is to get on All American Fives channel and he has a free E-Book that will be an IMMENSE help to you. Start by watching his video in the link provided. BTW always use an isolation transformer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZ21gmOnrdN0Z5I Sure you can just leave the audio trans in circuit and use a voltmeter set on AC volts to see if the audio information is getting to the primary of the transformer. I usually just put the ground meter lead to chassis ground. I always use an isolation transformer as to not electrocute myself though. Please download All American Fives E-book. It's really really good. I also like to use an analog volt meter so I can see the pointer moving. I also like to use a tone generator and trace the tone as it goes through the circuits

im new to this so what do you mean by ground meter lead to chassis ground? also i have a Philco model 51 934 121 where i had to disconnect the AM & FM antenna leads and i dont remember what prongs to solder them onto again

Just saying the Volt meter has two leads. One black and one red. It doesn't matter for AC though, but I like to use the black lead on the chassis and the red lead as the probe. I was just calling the black lead the "ground" lead. I like to use a meter that has a moving needle too. then I can see the audio moving the needle around. You really need to see that free E-book from Rick of All American Five. It's really good and great for someone who is new to the hobby. BTW transformer-less radios like an All American Five (5 tube radio) you really need to use an isolation transformer. I use one all the time. The chassis can be hot with the line voltage and you can die form electrocution if you hold on to it with one hand and are grounded somewhere else.

I wish I could help you but I don't have any rotary switches. I think they are also called wafer switches. Sometimes Ebay might be a help. You might have to find a spare transmitter for parts.
