Locking Blade Mod - Xiaomi NexTool Huo Hou

I got this in the post this morning after seeing it show up in a few reviews online. Overall I've been really impressed with the quality of this thing, but a locking blade is a must for me (too easy to injure yourself with a free folding blade).
I had an idea of how I was going to do the mod before it arrived and it turned out to be as easy as expected. It only takes a little cutting and grinding and you can have a locking blade too.
Excuse the slightly wonky cut though. I have a tendency to watch the work through the camera screen instead of looking directly at what I'm actually doing. I have to try to get out of that habit.

Good job and thanks for the video. A recommendation. For safety with rotating tools you must wear glasses and ... gloves. 6:04 In my opinion, the process should be to first cut the liner lock and then lower the blade of the knife. In this way we can adjust better by filing and testing until we reach the right point.

Can the blade and the saw be swapped? If it can, then the blade would lock instead of the saw. If I had to choose, I'd rather have a locked blade than a locked saw. But then, the saw is usually designed to strike a flint with its spine, so having it locked made some sense. Thank you for this video, it makes DIY junkies like us happy.

FYI there are two version of this tool from different brands. There is Xiaomi NefxTool Flagship and there is HuoHou NexTool Flagship. They are absolutely identical but one has a locking blade and the other doesn't have a lock. Do your research before buying things online. There are plenty of videos and blogs on the internet.

This has both the Xiaomi Nextool and the HuoHuo branding. The locking version was released after this one and is known as the "pro" version.

Indeed, in fact, it's pretty hard to find a multitool without a locking blade, so buying one of the few that is UK legal, and then modding it seems really odd, when you can jusy buy a locking one.

@@engineeredlifeform I'm not from the UK so it matters little to me. The locking variant also was not available at the time I made the video. As someone who uses multitools every day, it's far more important for me to have a safe blade lock to prevent it closing on my fingers. There's no legal difference between locking or non locking where I live.

I didn't "seek out" nothing. I bought it because it was cheap and I made it better. There's nothing at all rare about it. I have loads of other multitools, both locking and non-locking. What benefit is there in having a non-locking blade, other than the legality in a country I don't live in? That is what makes no sense. There is a world outside of little England.

I took that useless saw blade off and swapped it for the ¼" bit driver arm from a Gerber CenterDrive. With some light cutting and re-shaping, it fils like it belongs there. Full size scissors, full size needle nose pliers and now a full size bit driver took away any need for a different multitool. It definitely has lock rock, but nowhere near the level yours seems to have. I have the one with the locking blade from the factory, but i don't see why it wouldnt work with the earlier model too. I just wish the blade was a better steel, 3cr13mov isnt even acceptable for liners, let alone a blade.... Id happily pay ~$100 for a version with 154CM, or S30V. Since that's never gonna happen, im likely gonna make one myself out of some scrap AEB-L, or 1095, then if that goes alright ill make one out of some really nice Odins Helm Damasteel that i got a great deal on. The only thing stopping this multitool from being great is a quality blade, (and the pathetically weak chicago bolts. If you do the CenterDrive swap and intend to use it as a nut driver, make sure to replace the chicago bolts first. The head will snap off and leave you with a potential mess if you dont!) once it has one i can possibly see it eliminating the need for a dedicated EDC main blade, and if that was the case it moves from the back pocket to the front. Anyway, great video. Its nice to see that others appreciate this tool enough to put the effort into modding it. Liked and subscribed.

hello, the laws of where it is manufactured does not allow blocking on the leaves. The manufacturer does not completely end the blockage in order to pass the inspections. I also did the same as you.

Fine, it's made in China. But China is catching up with Design, construction, and innovation. I have one and think it's just as good as some of the EDC tools on the market.

Yes with excellent steel too. I have Roxon and Ganzo to compete with my Leatherman and Gerber and Chinese come tops with superior cutting ability. I mostly use needle nose pliers, scissors and wire cutters. pliers are superior too without any play and gaps when the jaws are closed like in Leatherman and gerber. So far Chinese ones cut steel wires not copper or aluminium like newly purchased one, super. Weight and slight bulkiness over the Americans, but why pay more for Made in USA bandwagon when I can buy superior products from China for lesser price, money does not come from trees!

Hi. Glad you liked it and thanks for the kind words. The handle is a little flexible when the screws aren't fully tightened, so once I had fully tightened them in the end, there was no play in the lock. If I were to do it again I would probably cut the handle first and then match the end of the knife blade to that, so basically do it the opposite way around. That would allow more fine tuning, if needed. :)

I loosen the pivot screw, and when I put it back (with Loctite) the screw rotates together when the blade is stowing. Drives me nuts.

No, the blade is much longer than the saw and it won't fit in the saw location. It also doesn't have the flat section used to lock it open.

Liked the idea. Kind of feel leatherman is still way better if you are willing to spend 20 dollars more, that does get you excellent quality and 25 years worth of trust.

I collect Letterman tools myself and this would be comparable with something like the Wave or other upper tier tools, rather than the cheaper tools like the Sidekick/Wingman etc, so you'll need to spend a bit than 20 dollars more for a comparable Leatherman. I wouldn't say the Leatherman is better by any real measure really, except for their great warranty but that's what the Leatherman price tag buys you. 🙂

Yeah, see the saw is a bit shorter than the knife blade so the knife won't fit into the recess for the saw blade. :)

Yes some countries do not allow locking blades to carry around. it is the laws of those countries. Nevertheless it is a super tool, I have Chinese designed, and made Roxon and Gonzo to work along with Leatherman and Gerber and Chinese come at par with them in QUALITY and design or better at times. Why pay more for Made in USA bandwagon when I can buy similar or superior Chinese products for less. I have to work hard for my money.
