That is probably the clearest demonstration, of what spools do, and how to defeat them, that I've seen on KZbin. Thank-you, LN.

Thank you so much for this video. Ironically, I'm a true newbie lock-picker myself. Only for a couple weeks now have I been getting into the sport. I've been watching you and the other respected KZbin pickers, rounded up all the locks I could find in my garage, bought and fabricated a couple cheap sets, and gave her a go. I had some patient luck with various Master locks I found (a few No. 3s, a No. 4, a No. 5, etc. [many without keys]), however one I hoped would be easier was a 185D (without the key). Quick research revealed this lock had a few spool pins in it. I KNEW I was feeling my first false sets! Between this and the #bosnianbill video where he translated the tension to a cardboard box needle scale with a washer weight, the counter rotation feel was perfectly explained, and I knew it as soon as I felt it. Big smile on my face when I got her. A big thank you from Alaska, and keep up the helpful videos and information. Know that it is appreciated.

Hey Ln, I got some padlocks to practice on instead of the see thru ones like you suggested and spent hour after hour trying to pick it with no joy, so I went back into your vids to find out what I was doing wrong and found this video, brilliant explanation of what is happening by the way thank you, it made it seem very clear what to do and how to do it, I just need to put it in to practice now. Amazing video. Probably one of, if not *the* best video I have seen to demonstrate and elucidate the concept of spool pins and how to defeat them. Can you please do videos just like this on other security pins such as serrated and mushroom etc? That would be absolutely amazing and incredibly useful for us newbies to locksport.

Also, where can one buy a nice re-pinnable lock like yours and extra pins with multiple different security pins? That would save me having to keep buying millions of locks :P

+techwg I got the cutaway lock in the video from www.locksaway.com have a look at video 011 for a full review and breakdown. I conclude that it's a great lock for demonstration purposes but it doesn't quite feel or act like a non-cutaway lock since so much metal has been removed.

I am bidding on some job-lots of euro cylinders on ebay to practice. I have padlocks for now and more on the way. I know there is a guy who sells a cut-through lock somewhat like yours and on his site he sells pinning kits but the selection of security pins is extremely limited. Like 2 types, spools and serrated. Not even mushroom or any others I don't know the name of. However the guy I am thinking of has a lock which I don't think you can repin which is chock full of strange security pins. So unless that can be re-pinned I have no idea where to source such pins. However, IF you can pull it off and you make a little playlist series like this video on the various types of security pins, identifying them by feel/effect, explanation of them, technique for picking, then I think you would have the best series I have seen on security pins.
@techwg

locksaway.com/re-pin-kits This is the lock that has crazy security pins, not sure if you can remove the pins though: locksaway.com/ultimate-challenge-cutaway-6-pin-euro I don't think you can :( Maybe if you contact that guy he could try to get you some different security pins maybe?

Dear great guide. Veeery exhaustive! I was able to apply your suggestions with success.. but now I have a cilinder that after a half turn blocks itself again. Now I do not understand if the pins goes back to block the flat side of the key or is another trick to avoid involuntary openings. Thanks again!

I know this is five years late but i just got into picking recently. I figured out counter rotation on my own just through experience. The problem is every time I run into counter rotation it resets the pins. Even if I DO NOT release tension. The counter rotation itself resets pins. Is that a binding order issue? I feel like it is. I figured when I DO release tension I just am not quite skilled enough to find that happy medium. But the times I DON'T release tension I don't know what else could be resetting the pins. It usually doesn't reset ALL of them. So binding order is about all I can think of that could be causing that. Is there anything else that could cause that or is it binding order?
@TristanChaika
@TristanChaika 2 жыл бұрын
Will the standard pin always bind first before the spool pins? How do you know which one is standard? I’m really struggling to not overset and also for feeling for counter rotation. Sometimes it’s there and other times not. I just got a Brinks 40mm and Master 141 to try out. Picked the Brinks twice right away (raked it the first time, and then spp the second, and got it really fast. But now I’ve been trying for several hours to pick it again with no luck. And the 141 has just been trouble. I think it has some fairly extreme keying and no slop in the core, so it’s pretty darn hard for this N00b.
@k5sss
@k5sss 2 жыл бұрын
There isn’t always a standard driver, but most locks do have at least one to make key insertion more reliable. It’s often #1 and stainless for anti-drill protection. Standard pins will usually bind before serrateds before spools. However, these are not hard rules; be prepared for any position or binding order.

I text madbob and he added some of your prybar tension tools to the site. I was the first order. I was not expecting to order so so soon, since my money is running low from so much lock-related gear. But since he was so prompt adding them to the site I felt I should do it or never do it. So I did it. I placed my order! What are the benefits to the curved ones?
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 8 жыл бұрын
Well done! They add a little comfort when hand picking some padlocks, you rest your finger along the curve. I quite like it but you'll have to try it out yourself when they arrive and see if it suits your style of picking.

I’ve got an old 5 pin Yale euro cylinder I have never been able to pick because it falls into such a deep false set, I can’t physically access the pins. It’s in my very own ‘naughty bucket’...it’s alone at present but I’m sure it’ll have company soon given my skill level...

Great video, glad I found your channel. Now, what to do if you think you have spools, ie: Master 140d, Abus 55/40, but you don't get counter-rotation? I always end up dropping the tension tool since i can't release enough to set the spools... Any suggestions?
@LockNoob

That’s very odd. Some locks with spools with high cuts on all the positions on the key don’t activate a spool when Picked. Not sure what else to suggest, sorry :-)

Trying to pick a Bezel, 6 pins4-5 spoles, but cant seem to find a false set. Have managed to pick it 3 times without really knowing what I am doing. Pins arent speaking to me at all. Atleast not in a language I understand. Needless to say I am a beginner. Any tips how to move forward?

If you can, dissasmble the lock and leave 2 or 3 pins in and try feeling for each pin and how they bind. It all just takes a bit of practice. Good luck :-)

I like your videos Look Noob, you're an artisan, I've told you that before! So I expect your subs to explode any day soon mate! Anyway dude, I've just bought one of those mini bench vices you use, same make too. Its on its way to me as we speak. I've noticed all the lockpickers in vids use a mini bench vice rather than hold the padlock in their sweaty trembly mitts. Especially as I've to pick my SS80CS and SS100CS...both super-heavyweights! I've SPP open one side of the SS100CS and thought that if the bugger had been in a vice I would've done the other side too...tricky to manipulate the bitch with its 9½lb weight! So...another 13 quid goes into my lockpickin. 🙄 I'm well over a grand down now and I blame LPL for this journey. I've always had an interest in padlocks from a kid (I'm 56 btw) but that bar-steward kickstarted my inner passions. So I'm gonna be bankrupt, hungry and homeless soon but man what a fabulous collection of padlocks I'll have!🙊🙈🙉💨🔒💨😆 Note: I'm an amateur, My SS100CS doesn't have an EVVA ICS, R1 Restricted or a Maur N4 core but the standard Squire KIK, they're ½ decent and superb for SPP a damn sight better than anything Mastercrock can churn out! Lock Noob, I'm telling you, I bought a two BIG brand new 64mm laminated M15DLF Mastercrocks a few days ago bargain at 15 quid for the pair couldn't resist at that price...city raked one of em open in 30 seconds! Rinse and repeat another 4 times!🔓💥
