aircraft are able to manueover even when missing an engine. as long as they can glide they will be able to land safely. there was plenty of room in the foliage to land. it is not wise to land in the water as there is drowning, the door getting stuck, and plenty more dangers. however, landing on ground is much easier and causes a lot less damage. you are flying an A380. and another advantage from landing on ground is that the ground crew/emergency services can reach you and your passengers safely and more quickly. also, with the gears down and landing in water the plane would break apart and flood extremely quick
