Manuel I am a 7D and 580EXII owner, but beginner to the hobby. I have found your tutorials a great help. I your explanations are very clear and the pace of the videos means its easy to follow along in my own menus. Thanks for all your effort. Duncan

Another 7D + 580 EXII owner. Your information is dead on and you are a great instructor. You include an introduction, a body and a summery. Thx so much, Martel!

Ever since I got my 60D and first (of several) 580EXII Speedlite back in 2011, I still love using the built-in optical trigger system even though I also own a set of Phottix Odin flash triggers. Despite the limitations with requiring a line of sight (and occasionally pausing due to the pop-up flash needing more time to recharge when firing many shots), it's still quicker and easier to set up for off-camera flash, and doesn't require extra batteries and settings. Everything can be controlled within the camera menus. I mainly use flash for indoor portraits so having a line-of-sight is not a problem since the preflash reflected off the walls can easily trigger the Speedlite

2024: just added another 580EXII to my collection of Speedlites so thought I'd review the functions with these tutorials. Something new I just learnt here: I didn't realise you could fire a test flash with the Picture Styles button. However, I use a 60D which doesn't have that button and searching online and with A.I, I couldn't find anything equivalent. So I began experimenting with all the buttons and discovered that the Lock AE button (Lock Auto Exposure button marked with an asterisk * ) did the same thing since it has to flash to check the exposure!

Hello. I want to make only the Speedlite work remotely from the camera it's possible? as?

When I only owned 3 Speedlites, I discovered there was another limitation to using the built-in pop-up flash on my 60D as a master trigger which I'm guessing might be similar to the 7D. When you use the pop-up flash as a trigger, you can only signal to a maximum of TWO groups, A and B. So I couldn't set up my 3 Speedlites in groups A,B and C to have 3 different flash levels, only 2 groups A and B. I needed to use a 580EX II as a Master in order to trigger 3 different groups of Speedlites as A,B and C

The tutorial to use the built-in flash and the speedlite at the same time has been very useful "THANK YOU" now I need to use the remote speedlite only. I can't find the correct setting

Thank you Manual. The camera menu seems to be much easier to navigate than that on the flash.

Potential problem could be that you have a damage cord or have the wrong cord. The 580 EXII need a ETTL - OC type cord. You really need to get the right cord that will communicate between the camera and the flash. Now I can't tell for sure what is the problem if you have the right cord and it if it is in the perfect condition. Another option would be to go with transceivers. There is some reliable ones out there with long range for cheap. Something to think about.

When I use a TTL Cord, my flash is not firing, what could be the reason? It is communicating each other, when i make some changes on the camera, the flash responds easily. But not firing.. Please advise.

You will need to use the built in flash unless you use a transceiver. There is cheap and reliable options like Cactus V5 units or a more expensive and better options, Pocketwizards. You will need to have a transceiver on your hot shoe on your camera body and one for your flash. This set up give you so much more freedom. I made a video about the Cactus, you can find it in my list.
